Daegu Korean BBQ restaurant with basil wraps: Hubaldae

My husband and I went to Hubaldae Dongdaegu Station Branch near Dongdaegu Station for Korean BBQ!

It was the best Korean BBQ restaurant I’ve eaten at in Daegu so far.

It had been such a long time since I’d kept saying, “Wow, this is amazing,” while eating hahaha. We ordered two servings of pork belly and one serving of daechang (beef large intestine), and I was so satisfied with everything—from the side dishes and wrap combinations to the service, not just the meat.

A little notice on the table said that Hubaldae started in Busan and has branches in other areas too, including Jamsil in Seoul.

I looked it up after eating, and I could see why it had expanded to other regions hahaha. (Because it’s delicious ♥︎)

A Sincheon-dong Korean BBQ restaurant where staff grill for you

First of all, the staff grill the meat for you here. At Korean BBQ restaurants, you can often be too busy grilling to relax, but here they cook it deliciously for you, so all you have to do is eat comfortably. I loved that.

But this was a combination I’d never seen in my life… they put basil on the grill with it? From that point, I thought, “Uh… this place is kind of unusual?” hahaha. You hardly ever get to grill basil alongside pork belly, right?

But when I actually tried them together, the fragrant basil went much better with the meat than I expected. Instead of feeling like an ordinary pork belly place, it kept bringing out combinations I’d never tried before, which made eating even more fun.

Not honey butter chips—honey potato wraps 🥔

And then there was another really fascinating combination: honey potato wraps!

I’ve had plenty of honey butter chips, but I’d never even heard of honey potato wraps in my life hahaha.

You wrap the meat in potato, and the sweet, nutty flavor makes you think, “Who came up with this?” It feels completely different from the usual lettuce + meat + ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) combination!

The meat itself is delicious, but I loved that there are so many ways to eat it, so you never get tired of it!!! 👍

Why the pork belly and daechang were so good

Still, no matter how special the side dishes or combinations are, the meat has to be delicious at a Korean BBQ restaurant. Hubaldae really had that foundation down. The pork belly was juicy and clearly good quality, and because the staff grilled it themselves, we could eat it at exactly the right doneness.

We had two servings of pork belly and then ordered one serving of daechang too. Having the daechang along with it made for such a perfect combination...

I think the basic quality of the meat is ultimately why people seek out Hubaldae Dongdaegu Station Branch as a great Korean BBQ restaurant near Dongdaegu Station. Personally, it was the most memorable Korean BBQ restaurant I’ve had in Daegu.

Even the kind service was satisfying 💛

Not only the meat, but the staff were incredibly kind too.

They grilled the meat for us and carefully showed us how to eat it, and when we came outside after finishing, a staff member even sprayed us with Febreze hahaha. The smell of grilled meat clings to your clothes, which can be a little bothersome, so seeing them take care of even that made me feel their service was truly thoughtful.

There were separate chairs right in front of the restaurant for people waiting. Seeing that made me think it must be a popular Sincheon-dong Korean BBQ spot hahaha. I’m just glad I found out about it now.

A place I want to return to near Dongdaegu Station

Hubaldae is near Dongdaegu Station, so it is in a convenient spot when you’re looking for somewhere to eat around Shinsegae Department Store or the station. Even with popular restaurants, I often wonder whether they are really worth seeking out in another area, but this is somewhere I felt would be worth trying at one of its other branches too. The meat quality was that good, the unusual combinations like basil and honey potato wraps were fun, and I was so pleased with the staff’s service.

We had two servings of pork belly and one serving of daechang very deliciously at Hubaldae Dongdaegu Station Branch, and if I crave meat near Dongdaegu Station next time, I think I’ll come back here.
