Daepa jambon vs ciabatta sandwiches at Baut, a Daegu café

I found a café near Dongdaegu Station that looked like it had great sandwiches, so I went to check it out. I was looking for somewhere to grab a simple lunch or enjoy brunch, and the space was spacious enough to relax and stay a while.

Location and parking near Dongdaegu Station

Baut is located in Sincheon-dong, Dong-gu — cross from Shinsegae Department Store and head up a bit toward the Marriott Hotel and you'll find it. The white building with a blue door as an accent point made it easy to spot.

There's a spot beside the building where you can park, but it's on the narrow side, so I used the nearby iParking lot instead. It was a 1–2 minute walk, spacious, and I remember it being about ₩1,000 per 30 minutes.

A different mood on every floor

The first floor has the counter and 3–4 two-person tables, giving off a modern, clean vibe. I visited around 3pm on a weekend, and there were quite a lot of customers.

There normally seems to be a display case with desserts, but it was nearly empty that day — maybe everything had already sold out — with what looked like this week's dessert, a cinnamon bun, set out instead.

Signature menu and the one-drink-per-person rule

True to a Dongdaegu Station brunch café, the brunch menu was fairly varied. Rather than heavy full-meal dishes, the focus was on lighter items like sandwiches, soups, and salads. The menu came with photos, which made choosing easy.

One thing to note: even if you order several brunch items, you still need to add one drink per person. We ordered the daepa jambon sandwich, the ciabatta sandwich, an iced Americano, and a decaf Americano. After ordering, you pick up your food yourself when the buzzer goes off.

Cute on the second floor, calm on the third

Following the stairs on the side takes you up to the second and third floors — there's no elevator.

The second floor felt a bit more charming, with colorful tables blending with pastel-toned walls and chairs. Maybe because it's such a good spot for photos, it actually had the most customers of any floor.

The third floor, in contrast, was much cleaner and quieter. If you want to get some work done or focus for a while, the third floor seems like the better fit. There's also a large group table like a meeting room, which looked great for visiting with several people.

We sat by the window on the second floor, and our order came out without much of a wait. With sunlight streaming onto the yellow table, the photos turned out pretty nicely too.

The salty daepa jambon sandwich

First, the daepa (green onion) jambon sandwich is made with crisply toasted baguette filled with daepa dressing, arugula, onion, sultana (raisins), and jambon.

It's spread with a whole grain sauce, plus a sauce that seemed to mix daepa, onion, and nuts, giving it a slightly sweet but salty flavor. There's also a fair amount of pepper, so overall it was a rich, bold-tasting sandwich. It seems like a great fit for anyone who wants a sandwich that feels like a full meal.

The sweet ciabatta sandwich

The ciabatta was filled with romaine, prosciutto ham, cheese, and tomato, plus basil pesto and a sweet berry jam.

It was a bit lighter than the daepa jambon sandwich, and the sweetness of the berry jam really came through. So if you like sweeter sandwiches, this one will probably suit your taste better. Since the two go in different flavor directions, splitting them to try both was a good move.

With a different mood on every floor, you can pick a seat that suits your taste, and it's a good place for a simple brunch. It seems especially good to visit when you want a light meal centered on sandwiches at a well-known Dongdaegu Station brunch café.
