Jongno 5-ga lunch with makgeolli and mung bean pancake: Sunhuine

In short

Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun is an old-school chicken hot pot restaurant in Dak Hanmari Alley in Jongno, Seoul, a walk from Exit 5 of Jongno 5-ga Station. Over lunch with a friend, one pot of dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) came with meat mung bean pancake and Jipyeong draft makgeolli, and the special sauce mixed at the table following the restaurant's instructions was remade twice. Sunhuine Bindaetteok is a good pick when you want a filling Dongdaemun lunch with a light drink alongside.

A full spread of dak hanmari at Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun

I had a lunch date with a friend near Jongno and was trying to figure out what to eat, so I ended up at Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun. Since I wanted a filling lunch and a light drink with my friend, I picked dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) for a Dongdaemun lunch.

Where is Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun, and when is it open?

It's within walking distance from Jongno 5-ga Station, and since it's right in the dak hanmari alley, it wasn't hard to find at all.

When I think of Sunhuine Bindaetteok, bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) is the first thing that comes to mind, but this place also serves dak hanmari, seafood bindaetteok, and yukhoe tangtangi (raw beef tartare with squid) — so many dishes you can order together. It looked like a great spot for ordering a bunch of things to share with a friend!

Inside, the place is pretty spacious and clean, with plenty of tables. Near the entrance, photos and autographs from celebrities who've visited caught my eye naturally. You could feel it's a place people have been coming to for a long time, and knowing it's designated as a Jongno-gu 'safe restaurant' also put my mind at ease.

Our lunch order: dak hanmari, meat mung bean pancake and Jipyeong makgeolli

We came for lunch and ordered dak hanmari, plus meat mung bean pancake as a side. And you can't have mung bean pancake without makgeolli, right? So we ordered Jipyeong makgeolli too! There were so many kinds of makgeolli on offer.

Next to the menu was a detailed guide on how to enjoy dak hanmari the best way, and you could also order an extra half chicken. Vegetables, mushrooms, rice cake, green onion, potato, and noodles could all be added to taste!

How to mix the special dak hanmari dipping sauce at your table

For the dak hanmari sauce, there was a separate guide on the table showing how to make it exactly to your taste rather than just dipping straight in — mix grated garlic, soy sauce, chili paste, and mustard first, then add vinegar and chives as you like!

We made it ourselves, adding each ingredient step by step as instructed. Spicy and tangy with chives mixed in, it turned out to be a great sauce for dipping the mild chicken. And it's refillable!

One pot of dak hanmari: what to eat first, from rice cake to potato

Our dak hanmari arrived as one hearty pot. Along with the chicken, there was green onion, cabbage, mushrooms, and jujube inside!

The charm of dak hanmari is really this — simmering it right there in the pot and scooping pieces out as you go. It was great for a warm lunch with a friend along with a light drink.

Looking at the info board, it said to eat the rice cake first once it floats up, then eat the chicken and potato together once the potato is cooked through. The rice cake with sauce was delicious too — especially soft and chewy!

Fried golden and crispy on the outside, thick and hearty inside — the first bite was crispy outside and moist inside, exactly the kind of texture that calls for makgeolli.

You can't have bindaetteok without makgeolli! We ordered Jipyeong draft makgeolli. Between the dak hanmari and the meat mung bean pancake, Jipyeong makgeolli was the best drink of the day!

Poured into the glass, it had a milky color and went down smoothly with a subtle sweetness that suited our taste well.

Especially good was the combo of a bite of crispy meat mung bean pancake followed by a sip of makgeolli. Pairing it with the pickled onions in soy sauce that came alongside added even more savory depth!

Why we mixed the dipping sauce two more times

As the dak hanmari bubbled away, the chicken and vegetables cooked up nicely. The chicken was tender, and eating it with the well-cooked cabbage added moisture and that deep broth flavor.

Dak hanmari chicken dipped in the special sauce

The signature move here is that special sauce we made earlier! Dipping the well-cooked chicken deep into it gave a tangy, salty, slightly spicy kick — totally different from eating it plain, so we ended up making the sauce two more times!

We scooped chicken and well-cooked cabbage into our small plates along with the broth, and as it kept simmering, the cabbage got even softer and the broth grew richer than at the start — great for spooning up warm broth right to the end.

We came for lunch with a friend, had dak hanmari with meat mung bean pancake on the side, and a light drink of Jipyeong makgeolli — this is a place I'd want to come back to whenever I'm craving dak hanmari in Dongdaemun.
