I went to Baekcheongu Kalguksu Dongbaek Branch, a go-to spot for mandu jeongol (dumpling hot pot) in Yongin, and had the seafood & mandu jeongol for two! Here's my review of the huge wang mandu (king dumplings), plentiful seafood, kalguksu noodles, and barley rice — a really filling meal.

The moment the weather turns even slightly cool, all I can think about is hot soup. This time I headed to Baekcheongu Kalguksu Dongbaek Branch in Dongbaek.

What we ordered at Baekcheongu Kalguksu: seafood and dumpling hot pot for two, 32,000 won

At Baekcheongu Kalguksu Dongbaek Branch, we picked the seafood & mandu jeongol for two, ₩16,000 per person, ₩32,000 total. I debated just getting kalguksu, but I wanted seafood too and couldn't give up on dumplings, so we ended up ordering the seafood mandu jeongol for two.

Bottom line: so glad we ordered this, haha. From the barley rice to seafood, dumplings, and kalguksu noodles — the moment the weather turns cool, hot soup is exactly what you want. We walked out way more full than expected.

Barley rice and side dishes arrive first

At Baekcheongu Kalguksu Dongbaek Branch, barley rice and basic side dishes are set out first, before the hot pot arrives.

You just pile bean sprouts and yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) on the barley rice, drizzle in the gochujang and sesame oil from the table, and mix it all up.

Places that serve barley rice as an appetizer these days are pretty rare, honestly. I meant to eat just a little before the main dish, but come on, that's not going to happen.

Nutty barley rice plus crunchy bean sprouts and yeolmu kimchi really wakes up your appetite. My chopsticks just kept moving. With the gochujang and sesame oil mixed in, it's savory and spicy enough that I kept eating.

But the real main event starts now…!

Even in photos you can tell the ingredients come piled high on one plate. Shrimp, various seafood, vegetables, huge dumplings, and kalguksu noodles, all together. I came here looking for mandu jeongol in Yongin, and I especially liked that seafood was part of the deal too.

Once the broth starts boiling, you just add the prepared ingredients and let it simmer. The broth starts out clear, but as the seafood cooks the flavor deepens, and the soup gets genuinely refreshing. It's not aggressively spicy or salty — clean but savory, so I kept scooping spoonful after spoonful.

Especially with several kinds of seafood in there, it was fun picking through and trying each one.

There's big shrimp, baby octopus, and plenty of vegetables, so the broth just kept getting tastier the longer it boiled. Best thing for a tired body — if you love hot soup, you won't be able to put your spoon down, haha.

How big are the wang mandu (king dumplings)?

True to a proper Yongin mandu jeongol, the dumplings at Baekcheongu Kalguksu Dongbaek Branch are essential. And they're genuinely big — even in photos, you can tell these aren't your typical small dumplings; a single one has serious presence.

For two servings, there were about 6 big dumplings, maybe more, so between bites of seafood and fishing out a dumpling here and there, you fill up fast. I especially liked that they simmer long enough in the broth that the dumpling skin turns soft and tender.

Unlike a plain steamed dumpling, the skin soaks up the jeongol broth and gets moist, so eating it with the soup is a totally different experience. Personally, the seafood was great, but fishing out a dumpling and eating it with the broth was my favorite combo.

After working through the seafood and dumplings, you're already pretty full. But seeing the kalguksu noodles simmering away, waiting for you, makes it impossible not to dive in right away.

Personally, this last kalguksu round is the part of any jeongol I look forward to most. As the noodles absorb the broth, it thickens slightly from where it started, and the chewy noodles soak up the seafood broth beautifully — genuinely delicious.

After saying we were full, we still cleaned out the noodles too, haha. Starting with barley rice, moving through seafood and wang mandu, and finishing with kalguksu — it really adds up to a substantial meal.

Is two servings enough for two people?

If you're looking for mandu jeongol in Yongin, Baekcheongu Kalguksu Dongbaek Branch is a solid choice since you get plenty of seafood alongside it. Even for us, who normally eat three servings, this felt like a lot — we ended up leaving dumplings behind, ugh. I wanted to get a box... chef, please cut the portions down a little, haha.

It's also a nice spot to bring your parents for hot soup, or for a family meal out when you're stuck deciding on a menu — this one should please pretty much everyone.
