Suwon-style marinated hwangjesal at Giheung BBQ: Dongbaek Hanokjip

In short

Dongbaek Hanokjip Charcoal Grill Butcher Restaurant is a hanok-style beef and pork butcher restaurant on Eodong-ro in Giheung, Yongin. The writer ordered Suwon-style marinated hwangjesal (premium rib finger) 600g for 73,000 won and hanwoo doenjang rice pot for 10,000 won, grilled them over charcoal, and checked out the 10 side dishes, the self-serve bar and a private lot big enough for a large SUV. For marinated galbi with easy parking in Yongin, Dongbaek Hanokjip is the answer.

Hanok exterior of Dongbaek Hanokjip Charcoal Grill Butcher Restaurant

I went to see the GV90 at Genesis Suji and while looking around for good food nearby, I found this unique hanwoo spot with its own parking lot and hanok interior — Dongbaek Hanokjip Charcoal Grill Butcher Restaurant — haha.

What the hanok interior and seating look like at Dongbaek Hanokjip

Dongbaek Hanokjip in Giheung, Yongin sells both beef and pork, and the whole place is done up as a hanok — it felt almost like a Korean traditional dining hall, the kind of upscale place you'd take future in-laws to.

4-top sofa seating in the main hall at Dongbaek Hanokjip

There's a private room in the back for group parties, so I'd recommend it for Giheung work dinners or gatherings too. The main hall has spacious sofa seating too — even at a 4-top table, it felt roomy and comfortable.

The parking lot is spacious enough that my large SUV had no trouble fitting in — a real plus. No parking fee either, and it's free if you're eating there.

You can order from the menu board, but there's also meat in the fridge you can pick straight from and eat there. No table setting fee either — just keep the tag and pay at the end. There were plenty of cuts: beef, pork neck, pork belly, front leg, and more.

The 10 side dishes and mul-kimchi (water kimchi)

They brought out a whopping 10 basic side dishes. If you run out, you can refill at the self-serve bar. My top recommendation was the mul-kimchi (water kimchi) — the seasoning was exactly to my taste, an amazing pairing with the meat.

Ordering Suwon-style marinated hwangjesal 600g for 73,000 won

  • Hwangjesal 600g: ₩73,000
  • Hanwoo doenjang sultbap: ₩10,000
  • Rice, 2 bowls: ₩2,000

Suwon-style marinated galbi is famous, right? Hwangjesal, meaning "emperor's cut," really lived up to its name here! The 600g portion was seriously generous, as you can see. The doenjang sultbap had finely chopped hanwoo mixed in — like a proper BBQ-restaurant doenjang stew, it had a deep broth flavor and hearty fillings.

Marinated galbi that barely stuck to the charcoal grill

Marinated galbi usually has sauce all over it, which makes it hard to grill without sticking. But the grill plates here had wide gaps and good material, so even the marinated meat didn't stick — easy to cook.

You can grab various sauces from the self-serve bar, but my pick was sesame oil, haha. It's so nutty that it went really well with the marinated galbi.

Lately I've gotten into dipping meat in wasabi — try it sometime! At first I thought it'd be weird since it's not sushi, but it wasn't at all. As you can see, the meat had almost no fat and was mostly lean, so the quality was really satisfying too.

The doenjang sultbap broth was so rich that dipping the meat straight into it was also a treat, haha. I'm not great at grilling, but as you can see, it turned out really well. Since the marinade is Suwon-style, it wasn't too sweet, so I never got tired of it.

Frozen soju bottles inside the soju freezer

Frozen soju freezer and the garden smoking area

This place seems perfect for drinkers and smokers alike. I'll explain the smoking area below, but it's really close and set up in a garden, so I'd recommend it for smokers. There's also a soju freezer, so bottles come out frozen solid, haha. If you like your soju cold enough to make your teeth ache, this is the place.

The smoking area is near the parking lot entrance, so it looked easy to come and go. But the building blocks it off well, so no smoke smell drifted into the restaurant at all — surprising. Nice touch that they have Febreze, coffee, and a water dispenser ready after your meal.

Each table has a drawer with wet wipes, tissues, utensils, grill plates, and small plates, so you don't have to get up and fetch things. The self-serve bar also stayed tidy since staff kept restocking and cleaning it up.
