Today I visited Omokgyo Gopchang, the original garlic gopchang and green onion kimchi specialist that anyone would guess is based near Omokgyo Station! It's been famous for a while so I was curious haha. There are tons of companies around Omokgyo Station, so I'd highly recommend it as a company dinner spot too!

The interior is clean and has a nice mood. It's not an old-school style place — more of an MZ-style gopchang restaurant! Maybe that's why there seem to be more young people here.

The menu board and the daily 20-serving garlic gopchang

First we sat down and checked the menu board!! As soon as we sat, we checked whether the traditional garlic gopchang — limited to only 20 servings a day — was still available.

Even the wording on the clean chopstick holder built up my excitement — it hinted at the garlic gopchang and green onion kimchi to come.

Top-grade domestic gopchang, slaughtered the same day! You know Seosan is famous for garlic, right? That garlic goes into the gopchang, clove by clove! Eating it with their house-made green onion kimchi is absolute heaven~! You must order the [traditional handmade garlic gopchang].

Omokgyo Gopchang's sauce guide by cut

Sauce guide by cut

Here's the overall Omokgyo Gopchang guide. There are matching sauces for heart, gopchang, daechang, and makchang, so it's fun to try them in different combinations.

Disposable apron from Omokgyo Gopchang

What I liked was the disposable apron!! This makes a surprisingly big difference... with reusable ones, you tend not to bother putting them on ㅠㅠ But given how oil and sauce can splatter at a gopchang restaurant, an apron is a must.

Our order for two

  • Traditional handmade garlic gopchang x1 (₩28,900)
  • Mixed gopchang x1 (₩27,900) — garlic gopchang + hwangso gopchang + makchang + daechang + heart + honeycomb tripe
  • Omokgyo fried rice (₩6,900)
  • Omokgyo dongchimi noodles (₩7,000)
Complimentary spicy sundubu-jjigae and side dishes

First, a spicy sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) arrives as a free side. They simmer it before the gopchang comes out, then move it to the middle once the gopchang arrives. There were also so many other side dishes!!

Grilling gopchang, starting with a fire show

Next, the main event!! As soon as it arrived, the staff member told us there'd be a fire show haha. Cameras ready right away!!

A fire show performed over the grilling gopchang

It comes pre-seared, then they grill it top and bottom like direct-flame grilling, so it cooks faster than expected.

Pre-seared mixed gopchang served ready to grill

Green onion kimchi is tasty even raw, but I love it grilled, so all of it went straight onto the pan!!

First up to finish cooking was the heart, so we ate that first.

The heart, first to finish cooking

The great thing about the mixed gopchang is you get to try a variety of cuts. We ate it with bean sprouts and chives! You might think garlic gopchang is just gopchang grilled with garlic, but there really is a difference. I'd recommend trying both.

Potatoes and daechang joined in too! I prefer eating it with onion or potato rather than on its own. The [spicy special sauce], aged for 72 hours from 15 ingredients made in-house, was the real kicker!

Sizzling away on the grill!

Grilled mushrooms stamped with the Omokgyo Gopchang name

Even the mushrooms had 'Omokgyo Gopchang' written on them! After finishing the whole platter of gopchang in various combinations, of course we couldn't skip the sides.

Cutting through the grease with dongchimi noodles

I felt like having a cool broth, so I ordered the dongchimi (radish water kimchi) noodles. Clean and refreshing, exactly what I wanted...! The broth wasn't like a typical store-bought naengmyeon.

The noodles had a nice bounce that cut through the gopchang's richness so well.

I asked for extra small plates and they gave them to me. Perfect for sharing~!

Finishing with fried rice, scraped down to the scorched bits

To finish, fried rice is a must!! It's stir-fried with high-quality 100% domestic chili powder, antibiotic-free eggs, five fresh ingredients, and Korean beef fat. They told us to wait about 4 minutes before eating it!

Once the egg is cooked through, they mix it and spread it out.

Fried rice spread out and cooked into scorched rice

I love scorched rice (nurungji), so I let it cook a bit longer and scraped it up. Almost like a dolsot bibimbap (hot stone pot rice) style!

The portion is generous too, so even when full, I kept eating haha. Finishing with fried rice is what truly completes a beef gopchang grilling session!

Final verdict

If you're looking for a place near Omokgyo Station or Mokdong for a company dinner, try Omokgyo Gopchang! It has 64 seats for groups plus free corkage. Definitely try the handmade garlic gopchang.
