Daily 20-serving garlic gopchang and makchang near Omokgyo Station

In short

Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is a gopchang (grilled beef tripe) restaurant tucked in an alley near Exit 1 of Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul. A serving each of the traditional hand-made garlic gopchang and grilled makchang came with a tableside fire-searing show, complimentary scallion kimchi and sundubu-jjigae, and fried rice cooked in front of us; verdict: a satisfying, generous meal worth the trip for garlic gopchang fans.

I'd been craving gopchang (grilled beef tripe) for a while, so I went looking for a good spot and heard there was a place near Omokgyo Station famous for garlic gopchang. It's been featured on several broadcasts and popular YouTube channels as a representative Omokgyo restaurant, carrying on a mother's recipe from a 30-year tradition of garlic gopchang — so I went in pretty excited!!

The interior has a cozy pojangmacha (street tent bar) vibe and is bigger than I expected! With as many as 64 group seats available, it seems like a great spot for company dinners, family gatherings, or engagement parties. And since it's corkage-free, you could even bring your own wine or whiskey to drink alongside the gopchang!

Sign noting same-day slaughtered domestic hanwoo gopchang

They said they bring in fresh, domestically raised beef and Korean beef (hanwoo) slaughtered that same day and pre-sear it themselves, which gave me real confidence in the food quality

Scallion kimchi from a Hongseong mother's recipe and spicy sundubu-jjigae

Basic side dish spread including cheonyeop and scallion kimchi

As soon as we sat down, the side dishes were quickly set on the table, and you could feel the care put into each one! Fresh cheonyeop (beef stomach lining) with a crunchy texture — great dipped in sesame oil sauce — came out along with a special spicy sauce aged 72 hours with 15 ingredients, plus shiitake mushroom wasabi. Best of all was the scallion kimchi, made exactly to the Hongseong mother's recipe using first-grade chili powder grown by the owner's own parents; grilled together with the gopchang fat, the umami doubles and it's truly a special treat!!

Spicy sundubu-jjigae served complimentary

On top of that, a savory ox-bone broth sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) simmered with the house's special chili paste also comes as a free side — perfect as a palate cleanser before the gopchang or as a drinking snack

Limited hand-made garlic gopchang and chewy grilled makchang

We ordered the restaurant's signature menu items: one serving of traditional hand-made garlic gopchang (₩28,900) and one serving of grilled makchang (₩25,900)!

Garlic gopchang and makchang on the grill with heart and vegetables

The grill came out piled high with gopchang, makchang, fresh yeomtong (beef heart), mushrooms, rice cakes, and bean sprouts!

A staff member gave us a fire show, lighting it right in front of us haha. The fire-searing seemed to completely remove any gamey smell and really brought out the savory flavor even more!!

Sold at only 20 servings a day, this 'one of Korea's top 3 traditional hand-made garlic gopchang' dishes is made with painstaking care, with whole cloves of Seosan six-clove garlic sourced directly from a Seosan farm tucked into every piece of tripe. The pungent yet savory garlic flavor blended with the gopchang for what was honestly the best gopchang of my life! The makchang we ordered alongside was also domestic, with no gamey smell at all — chewy in texture, and clean and savory the more you chewed!

With a bite of golden-grilled gopchang and makchang, cheersing happily with Chamisul soju and cider, all the fatigue from the week just melted away

Signature fried rice, cooked right in front of you

After finishing off the grilled meats, there's no skipping the essential K-dessert: the signature fried rice!! Omokgyo Gopchang's fried rice doesn't come out pre-cooked — instead, using 100% domestic chili powder, antibiotic-free eggs, and fresh ingredients, it's cooked in Korean beef fat right in front of the customer. It's fun to watch the ingredients get stir-fried right before your eyes, and pressed down crispy like a pan-fried rice cake, it even tastes a bit like nurungji (scorched rice) — absolutely delicious.

Between the flashy fire show, the carefully made side dishes, and top-grade hanwoo gopchang, I left Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch really satisfied! Strongly recommend it to anyone near Omokgyo or Mokdong looking for delicious gopchang with a shot of soju!
