Saturday lunch noodle soup restaurant in Yangsan: Eonyang Dak Kalguksu

In short

Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch is a chicken kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) restaurant on Tongdosa-ro in Habuk-myeon, Yangsan, Gyeongnam. On a Saturday lunch with his son, the writer ordered two bowls of Eonyang chicken kalguksu, one with extra chicken for 4,000 won, plus a bowl of rice, for exactly 25,000 won, and the chicken-bone broth with perilla powder tasted clean but deep. With half a chicken added, one bowl held nearly a whole bird — a health-food feast even outside the summer boknal days.

Choosing lunch with my son at a kalguksu restaurant near Tongdosa

Deciding on lunch, we went with Eonyang chicken kalguksu

With my son, I asked, what should we eat, how about kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup)? Is it okay if it has chicken in it,,yeah..he slurps noodles happily, so he'll eat kalguksu fine,,it's okay if there's chicken in the noodles too, right..he loves fried chicken of course, and dakdoritang,,that spicy braised chicken, he likes that too, so chicken-noodle soup should go down easy.

A large money tree pot outside the restaurant
I always notice the green

Even though I was hungry before we ate, I checked out the potted plants first. Oh, a money tree is sitting outside. Big pot. Money trees are usually kept indoors, but I guess they put this one out for everyone to see on their way in. My reflection in the glass looks a little slimmer. Wow...I'd like to lose just 1kg more.

Closing day and parking at Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch

Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch is closed every Wednesday. There's a regular-closure sign right by the door.

Going in. Good thing it's Saturday today, so I picked the right day. What if I'd shown up on their day off,,since we're near Tongdosa, I figured I'd walk around the temple after eating too. What if it's crowded,,so we ended up heading to the amethyst cave instead, ha.

The chicken menu changes now and then, soy-braised jjimdak,,also...there's a white sign outside saying chicken kalguksu, so it's easy to spot. The parking lot is right next to the restaurant. Park easily and go on in.

Menu prices: chicken kalguksu 10,000 won, extra chicken 4,000 won

The top item is the signature dish

Since we came to Eonyang, we had to try the chicken kalguksu. A few years ago I first had chicken kalguksu in Seomyeon, Busan. Noodles meeting chicken makes for a whole different vibe, it really feels like eating a health-boosting meal. Besides that there's chicken gomtang (soup), Eonyang-style kalguksu, soy-braised jjimdak, and chewy mandu (dumplings). Adding chicken is ₩4,000. A large portion is ₩1,000 more.

Pay a thousand more and get the large size, apparently — I only noticed the text after we'd already finished eating.

Interior full of lunch customers
Kalguksu dining hall

Kind of a national comfort food, I'd say — even at lunchtime, lots of tables were already full of diners. We were one of those tables. The empty seats wait for the next customers.

What we ordered: two bowls of eonyang dak kalguksu as expected, one with extra chicken since my son loves chicken,,and one bowl of rice. Exactly ₩25,000.

I came as part of a sponsored tasting group, so I managed to hit the budget pretty precisely, ha.

What's on the self-serve bar? Kimchi that really is spicy

Danmuji (pickled radish), spicy kimchi, and mild kimchi are all set up. First they put a basic amount of kimchi on the table. If you need more, you come here and take extra. Just don't waste it — take exactly as much as you'll actually eat. Once you get into the chicken and broth, the spicy kimchi starts calling your name.

Made fresh daily. Domestic napa cabbage kimchi. A bit spicy. Eat it little by little and the seasoning is spot on.

Menu sign explaining chicken bone broth and perilla powder
Menu description

The chicken kalguksu is made with chicken bone broth, perilla powder, and half a chicken. The depth of flavor is outstanding. Just as the sign says, the broth is rich. Clean yet deep at the same time. As for the kimchi, it's really spicy,,two exclamation marks. Burning up.

Add half a chicken and the bowl holds nearly a whole bird

Since everything was prepped and ready, it came out about 5 minutes after ordering. Shredded green onion on top. Feast your eyes first. Looking left and right, taking it in.

The one on the right is my son's, with extra chicken

No breakfast, so this was lunch. A little hungry too, and we'd driven 35 minutes from home to get here. My stomach had plenty of time to get ready for food.

With the extra half chicken it's almost a whole bird. Not boknal today, but that's exactly the feeling

Wow,,so much. My son ate it all.

Plump, tender, and chewy. It suddenly reminded me of Mimi, who loves kalguksu. Mimi who loves the kind with clams in it.

Onion and danmuji brought from the self-serve bar

Went to the self-serve bar and brought back onion and danmuji. Radish is a must when eating chicken. I always make sure to grab radish or potato. And onion along with it.

Finished eating.

I was too full to eat more, so my son had it all by himself,,he loves anything cool and refreshing.
