Table setting of mushroom shabu shabu at Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu Osan Dugok Branch

A menu comfortable for anyone, young or old, to enjoy

I'd been craving something warm and filling for a while, so I went out for shabu shabu. Being able to eat meat, vegetables, and mushrooms all together without feeling too heavy while still feeling like a proper meal is exactly why it's one of my favorite dishes.

The self-bar! They kept it fully stocked without ever running low on anything.

One thing that set this place apart was the mushroom shabu shabu loaded with cordyceps and several other kinds of mushrooms, which really caught my eye.

Is parking easy at Dongchundang in Osan Dugok?

Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu Osan Dugok Branch has plenty of parking space in front of the building. Personally, parking is something I quietly consider important when heading to a restaurant. Sometimes you track down a supposedly great spot only to find nowhere to park, and it drains your energy before you've even eaten.

But Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu had ample parking space right in front of the building, which made it easy to visit by car. Especially when traveling as a family, easy parking makes a place much less of a hassle to visit.

Inside Dongchundang: dining room and table spacing

The restaurant itself is quite spacious and sizable

The interior was clean, spacious, and just really nice. It felt like the perfect atmosphere to bring your parents to. The tables weren't crammed together — everything felt comfortably spread out, and the tables themselves were wide enough to fit several dishes at once. With shabu shabu, the pot, meat, vegetables, sauces, and individual plates all end up on the table, so it can get cramped if the table is small, but here there was plenty of room to eat comfortably. It seemed like a great spot not just for family meals but also for gatherings with a larger group.

From the pre-meal bibimbap to the self-bar

While waiting after ordering, a pre-meal bibimbap (mixed rice) arrived. It was a simple bibimbap with yeolmu (young radish greens), gochujang, and seaweed flakes — perfect for a bite or two before the shabu shabu came out. It was savory and salty with a crunchy texture from the yeolmu, and I ended up reaching for it more than I expected.

It felt like the perfect way to whet my appetite while waiting for the shabu shabu. Off to one side there was also a self-bar, and it was pretty well stocked too. Being able to grab side dishes or broth yourself meant not having to flag down staff constantly, which was convenient. Looking around the self-bar, I found everything from popcorn to coffee, black sesame soy milk, and cordyceps tea.

How does the unlimited makgeolli self-bar work?

Unlimited refills of makgeolli served in a kettle

At the self-bar of Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu Osan Dugok Branch, you can enjoy unlimited refills of makgeolli served in a kettle. Anyone who loves the makgeolli pairing would be pretty thrilled with this setup! I couldn't drink any that day due to personal circumstances, but I'd definitely love to try it next time I visit.

Which mushrooms come with the mushroom shabu shabu?

Each type of mushroom had a different color and shape, so it was quite fun just visually.

When you think of mushrooms, you usually picture oyster, enoki, or king oyster mushrooms, but here several different varieties were mixed together, which made it fun just to look at. I got to taste cordyceps, wood ear, oyster, king oyster, and lion's mane mushrooms all at once. Anyone who loves mushrooms would probably really appreciate this lineup. And the minari (Korean watercress) was seriously plentiful.

Shabu shabu ingredients including cordyceps and various mushrooms

When I first saw the pot, there was so much minari piled on top that I wondered how it would all fit in. But once the heat went up and it started boiling, the minari gradually wilted down and naturally sank into the pot.

Before

Some mushrooms were soft while others kept a chewy texture, so even mushrooms of the same type tasted quite different. Above all, the broth was infused with plenty of mushroom flavor, so even just sipping the broth on its own was rich and savory.

After

With shabu shabu, I enjoy eating the ingredients, but I also love the process of the broth getting deeper and richer as you keep adding more ingredients, so I took my time simmering it all.

Kalguksu, fried rice and ice cream to finish

The mushroom shabu shabu at Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu doesn't end with just the shabu shabu — it continues on to kalguksu and finally rice, so I came away having enjoyed a really satisfying full meal.

Ice cream served at the end of the meal

For the final touch, they gave us Excellent brand ice cream. Oh my gosh, seeing we came with a baby, they gave us one each, three in total, and I was genuinely touched... such thoughtfulness. Ending on a good note like that makes me want to come back — a great restaurant in Osan Segyo.
