Charcoal pork set with a bibim guksu finish in Gwangalli: Jukrim

In short

Jukrim Sutbul Dwaeji Gui is a charcoal pork barbecue restaurant on the main road of Gwangnam-ro in Gwangalli, Suyeong-gu, Busan, where staff grill the meat for you. Two diners ordered the Jukrim Handon Set of pork belly, pork neck and soybean paste stew, then added a bowl of bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) once most of the meat was gone. With the staff handling the grill, the meal at Jukrim Sutbul Dwaeji Gui left more room for conversation than for flipping meat.

Gwangalli has so many restaurants that it's genuinely hard to choose, but sometimes you just want a good plate of meat without agonizing over the menu. And meat is great, but constantly flipping and watching the grill can get tiring — it's hard to focus on the conversation when you're worried about timing every cut.

So this time I looked for a staff-grilled pork restaurant in Gwangalli and ended up at Jukrim Sutbul Dwaeji Gui (죽림숯불돼지구이). The name itself — charcoal-grilled pork — already promised something properly done, and after visiting, the meat really was good, and best of all, the staff grilled it for us so we could just relax and eat.

Where Jukrim Sutbul Dwaeji Gui is and what the dining room is like

Jukrim Sutbul Dwaeji Gui sits right on the main road of Gwangnam-ro in Suyeong-gu, Busan, so it's fairly easy to find even on a first visit. In Gwangalli, once you head into the side streets, all the restaurants start to look alike, so location actually matters a lot for a first-time visit.

This place, being on the main road, catches your eye as you walk by, and getting there wasn't difficult at all. It also struck me as an easy spot to explain when making plans to meet up somewhere in Gwangalli.

I went for dinner, and once inside, the interior was more spacious than I expected — another point in its favor. Some barbecue restaurants have tight table spacing that feels a bit cramped, but this one had a roomy interior, good for larger groups too.

There were also quite a few foreign tourists visiting that day. Gwangalli itself draws a lot of tourists, and clearly this pork restaurant in the area does too — seeing foreign customers eating there gave me a little bit of a vacation feeling myself. Watching tourists enjoy Korean-style charcoal-grilled pork somehow fit the vibe of the Gwangalli neighborhood well.

Why having the staff grill the pork makes the meal easier

Inside, Jukrim Sutbul Dwaeji Gui felt spacious and clean overall. Since every table has an open flame, barbecue restaurants can feel a bit stuffy when the space is tight, but here we could sit comfortably without that feeling. It seemed like a good spot for friends or couples in Gwangalli, and also fine for a bigger group eating meat together.

Best of all, since the staff grilled the meat for us, we didn't have to worry much about the cooking during the meal. That turned out to be a bigger perk than expected. When you go out for barbecue, you're excited at first flipping the meat, but halfway through it gets awkward figuring out whose turn it is — with staff grilling, you just wait for the meat to cook nicely, which was really convenient, especially while chatting through the meal.

What comes in the Jukrim Handon Set: pork belly, pork neck, soybean paste stew

We ordered the Jukrim Handon Set. It included pork belly, pork neck, and a soybean paste stew (된장찌개). We visited as two people, and personally, the portion was a perfect fit for two.

Eating only pork belly can get a little greasy, while only pork neck can feel a bit lacking — so having both together was great. Switching between the two cuts kept things from getting monotonous, and the different textures made comparing them part of the fun. And with the essential soybean paste stew included, the meal felt complete without ordering extra sides separately. A solid combination for two people to eat meat and have stew alongside.

Charcoal-grilled pork belly and neck with the side dishes

After a short wait, the meat arrived. As soon as it hit the charcoal, that smell started rising right away — honestly, this moment is always the most exciting part of any barbecue restaurant. They grilled the pork belly and neck together, and having them grill it for us made waiting easy.

I'm not great at grilling meat myself, so I usually worry about burning it or overcooking it whenever I go to a barbecue place, but this time I got to just talk and wait without that worry. As the meat cooked, the charcoal aroma drifted up faintly, and watching it turn golden brown right in front of us made me even hungrier.

Once the meat was cooked through, the pork belly had that classic savory richness, while the pork neck had a leaner, cleaner taste, distinct from the belly. Alternating between the two was definitely a good combination. Personally, my favorite way to eat it was one bite of meat followed by a bite of the side dishes.

At a barbecue restaurant, the side dishes matter almost as much as the meat itself. No matter how good the meat is, if the sides are lackluster, it's a bit of a letdown — but here, the sides overall paired well with the meat. What stood out most were the seasoned bean sprouts (콩나물무침) and a scallion-salad-style side dish (파절이).

Eating them in between bites of meat cleaned the palate and complemented the savory flavor of the pork nicely. I sometimes topped a piece of pork belly with the seasoned bean sprouts, and sometimes ate it with the scallion side — I really liked these combinations. Fatty cuts like pork belly especially taste better paired with something tangy or crunchy. The side dishes didn't compete with the meat's flavor but rather enhanced it when eaten together.

Why the Jukrim Handon Set suits two people

One reason the Jukrim Handon Set worked well for two was being able to eat pork belly and pork neck together. Pork belly's charm is its rich, fatty flavor, while pork neck is comparatively leaner, so switching between the two cuts kept our palates from getting tired.

We started with pork belly, moved on to pork neck, then went back to pork belly again. Charcoal-grilled pork tastes great with just a light dip in salt, and just as good with the side dishes, so it was fun trying different combinations. Chatting away while eating meat together, the plate emptied before we knew it. Meat really does disappear faster the more people there are eating it.

Finishing with bibim guksu: the sauce is the highlight

After eating a good amount of meat, we started craving something tangy and spicy, so we ordered bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) too. Ordering bibim guksu at a barbecue restaurant feels almost like an unwritten rule, and this time was no exception — glad we ordered it. The sauce was the highlight of the bibim guksu. It wasn't just spicy for the sake of it; it had a flavor that really stuck with you, making it a great pairing after all that meat.

Alternating a bite of meat with a bite of bibim guksu turned out to be a pretty great combination. After the savory, rich taste of the meat, the punchy sauce of the noodles woke up the appetite again. Personally, I think the noodles themselves matter for bibim guksu, but the sauce is what really counts in the end, and this place's sauce was quite impressive. Thanks to it, I kept picking my chopsticks back up even after eating plenty of meat. If you're wondering what to order to finish off a meat meal, I'd recommend adding bibim guksu to the mix.

Jukrim Sutbul Dwaeji Gui in Gwangalli, in short

What I liked about this visit to Jukrim Sutbul Dwaeji Gui was, first, that the location was easy to find, second, that the interior was spacious, and third, that having the staff grill the meat made for a relaxed meal. More than anything, not having to stare at the grill flipping meat the whole time turned out to be more of a relief than I expected.

  • Easy-to-find location on a main road
  • Spacious interior without cramped table spacing
  • Charcoal grilling done by the staff
  • The Jukrim Handon Set (pork belly, pork neck, soybean paste stew) is a good size for two
  • Seasoned bean sprouts and scallion-style side dishes pair well with the meat
  • The sauce on the bibim guksu finish is memorable

It seemed like a good place to visit with friends or a partner for a chatty meal, and also fine for larger groups. The Jukrim Handon Set, with pork belly, pork neck, and soybean paste stew, was a good fit for two people, and the pairing with the side dishes worked well too. The seasoned bean sprouts and scallion-style side dish matched the meat nicely, and the bibim guksu we ordered at the end stood out for its sauce.

There were also a lot of foreign tourists that day, which gave a real taste of Gwangalli's distinct atmosphere. Gwangalli has so many good restaurants that deciding where to eat can be a struggle, but for anyone who wants a solid meat meal without wandering around a busy tourist area, a place like this is a solid option. For those who prefer someone else doing the grilling, this restaurant clearly has the advantage of a relaxed meal.

There are days when you want meat but grilling it yourself feels like a hassle, and eating something half-hearted feels like a letdown too. On days like that, ordering the Jukrim Handon Set, alternating between pork belly and pork neck, and finishing with bibim guksu makes for a pretty satisfying meal. We visited as two and ordered the Jukrim Handon Set, and the portion and composition were just right for two people — with the soybean paste stew included, we finished the meal feeling completely satisfied.

If you're looking for a pork restaurant in Gwangalli, this one is easy to reach and has a spacious interior, making it a comfortable choice. Above all, having the meat grilled for us made it easy to focus on the conversation during the meal. I personally prefer a relaxed meal where someone else grills the meat and I can just talk, rather than being busy managing the grill myself.

I'd like to visit again the next time I'm craving pork in Gwangalli. I'll have to think ahead about what to order next time. The bibim guksu we had that day left a strong impression with its sauce, so I'd likely order it again alongside the meat. If you're looking for a staff-grilled pork restaurant in Gwangalli, or a comfortable spot for two to enjoy pork belly and pork neck together, ordering the Jukrim Handon Set with a side of bibim guksu at Jukrim Sutbul Dwaeji Gui was a pretty good choice ☺️
