Haeundae open-run: whole squid jjamppong at Songjeong Dol Jjamppong

In short

Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is a stone-plate Chinese restaurant on Songjeonggwangeogol-ro in Haeundae, Busan, within walking distance of Songjeong Beach. Arriving second in the open-run line for the last meal of a Busan business trip, the writer ordered the whole squid stone jjamppong for two and found warm scorched rice under the broth once all the toppings were cleared. Songjeong Dol Jjamppong cooks everything to order, so the food takes time, but this is a jjamppong worth the wait.

Where to park at Songjeong Dol Jjamppong? Head behind the building

The parking lot for Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is a dedicated lot behind the building. We arrived at the street-facing front of the building and got confused when there was no 1st floor there, haha. Head around back and you'll find the dedicated lot,

park there, and just make a run for the storefront right in front of you.

Why you need to run, I'll explain in a moment...

Is an open-run necessary? Second in line at opening

Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is a Haeundae spot where the open-run is essential. We did the open-run and arrived second, with one team ahead of us already picking out their menu.

The space is clean and spacious, giving off the exact vibe of a typical Chinese restaurant. But the taste is anything but typical...

Why the food takes a while at Songjeong Dol Jjamppong

Songjeong Dol Jjamppong cooks each dish to order, so it doesn't arrive the instant you press a button — come with a relaxed mindset.

Still, a gift of a dish is waiting on the other side of that wait!

Sign at Songjeong Dol Jjamppong noting they close when ingredients run out

They only sell the quantity prepared each day, weekday or weekend, and close once ingredients run out. Can you tell how serious they are about their food?

Every morning they hand-prep the seafood and vegetables themselves and manage ingredients on a same-day-use principle, so all we had to do was show up ready to eat well. (Turn on notifications for Songjeong Dol Jjamppong and get a free ade)

Menu: stone-plate jjamppong, stone-plate jajangmyeon and mangboosha

Orders go in through table order. We brought over our yangdani (pickled radish) from the self-serve bar, set it down, and placed our order via table order.

With so many stone-plate options — stone-plate jjamppong, stone-plate jajangmyeon, stone-plate mapa tofu — plus regular tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), dumplings, and mangboosha (stuffed shrimp toast), we nearly had decision paralysis, but the first visit has to be the classic! We ordered the whole squid stone jjamppong for two.

How does the whole squid stone jjamppong for two taste?

The whole squid stone jjamppong had a deep broth flavor completely different from ordinary jjamppong. We spent the wait glancing around the restaurant.

Steaming whole squid stone jjamppong on the stone plate

A generous, piping-hot stone plate showed up with a visual that instantly turned heads, and you could tell before even taking a bite. What was it? The rich, spicy aroma hitting you first already promised how good it would be!

Sure enough, the instinct wasn't wrong — the deep broth so different from ordinary jjamppong, the generous whole squid, and the noodles well-coated in seasoning slurping down together made for an absolutely perfect combination.

The scorched rice hidden at the bottom of the stone plate

Once you finish all the toppings, like a hidden-picture puzzle there's still-warm scorched rice waiting at the bottom, and you can really feel the owner's intention to give their all down to the last bite.

By the time our order came out, the place was already completely full, haha. Whether tourists or locals, it seems everyone but us already knew how good this was, and it stirred up a bit of resentment,

but I was glad to finally know about this life-changing jjamppong spot, Songjeong Dol Jjamppong — and ironically, the staff are so kind. Not just kind, actually — genuinely good people, the kind where it's written all over their faces. It almost felt unfair for a Haeundae restaurant to have that too.
