Jeonpo, Busan sashimi restaurant with spicy fish stew: Rigo Susan

In short

Rigo Susan Jeonpo Station Main Branch is a live-fish sashimi restaurant on Jeonpodae-ro 216beon-gil in Busanjin-gu, Busan. Two diners arrived on a weekday at 6pm with no wait and ordered the aged live sashimi platter set for 49,000 won, which came with amberjack, salmon and flatfish plus a full spread of side dishes including tteokbokki, California rolls and cold udon, then added spicy fish stew for 5,000 won and a bowl of rice. Out again today

I've been craving sashimi lately so I went to Rigo Susan! We visited around 6pm on a weekday, two of us, and got in right away with no wait. There's a generous spread of sashimi and all kinds of banchan (side dishes), so if you're looking for a good-value sashimi restaurant in Jeonpo, this one was solid :)

What Rigo Susan looks like inside

🏠 Interior

The inside of Rigo Susan Jeonpo Station Main Branch was clean and comfortable overall. The tables weren't crammed too close together, so it was nice for two people to sit and eat at ease.

I expected sashimi restaurants to feel a bit bustling, but this one was more relaxed than I thought, so it seemed like a good spot for a date over sashimi too.

What we ordered at Rigo Susan and what it cost

📝 Order

  • Aged live sashimi platter, ₩49,000
  • Spicy fish stew, ₩5,000

The two of us shared the sashimi platter and added spicy fish stew and rice at the end.

How was the amberjack, salmon and flatfish platter?

🐟 Amberjack, salmon, flatfish platter

Rigo Susan's aged sashimi platter came with three kinds: amberjack, salmon, and flatfish.

The amberjack was so soft it seemed to melt the more you chewed, and it had a subtle nutty flavor that was really appealing. The salmon was soft with its own distinct rich flavor, and the flatfish had a firm, chewy texture — it was fun switching between the three.

Building your own bites with sushi rice, seaweed, perilla leaves and white kimchi

What I especially liked was that sushi rice came with the meal! We put sashimi on the rice to make our own sushi, wrapped it in seaweed, or ate it with perilla leaves, ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), and garlic.

It also went well with the tangy white kimchi, so we could enjoy the same sashimi in lots of different combinations. Eating just plain sashimi can get a little tiring, but switching things up kept it delicious to the end.

Which side dishes came out that day

🍤 A full spread of banchan

Rigo Susan's banchan changes a little every day, they said. That day we got a whole lineup: tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), spicy squid salad, corn cheese, assorted fried food, cold udon, okonomiyaki, California roll, and tofu kimchi.

Of those, the California roll was surprisingly good, with the popping texture of flying fish roe combined with crab stick and pickled radish. The assorted fried food had squid and sweet potato — the batter was really crispy, and the squid especially was nice and tender.

The spicy squid salad, mixed with vinegared chili sauce, was tangy, spicy, and sweet, with the finely sliced squid nice and chewy. The cold udon had springy noodles that paired well with the cool broth.

The okonomiyaki was soft and got an extra savory kick from the sauce and bonito flakes! The rest — tteokbokki, corn cheese, tofu kimchi — were all nice to pair one by one between bites of sashimi. It wasn't just that there were a lot of banchan types, the flavors overall were good too, so it was hard to pick a favorite.

Why the 5,000-won spicy fish stew is worth adding

🍲 Finishing with spicy fish stew

We finished with spicy fish stew for ₩5,000 and a bowl of rice. The broth was seriously insane...! With big fish bones inside, the broth was rich and deeply flavored, spicy with a real savory kick.

The radish, which had soaked up all that broth, was especially delicious, and with tofu in there too, a spoonful of rice with the broth was just right. Even though we were pretty full, it was the kind of taste that kept us scooping up broth haha. Personally, if you visit here, I'd recommend definitely adding the spicy fish stew to finish!

Is Rigo Susan in Jeonpo worth it for two?

Overall 💭

From the sashimi platter that let us try amberjack, salmon, and flatfish all at once, to the full spread of banchan, to the spicy fish stew, the whole meal felt really substantial. I especially liked that you could enjoy the sashimi in various ways — as sushi, wrapped in seaweed or perilla leaves, or with white kimchi — instead of just eating it plain. If you're looking for a good sashimi restaurant in Jeonpo to enjoy a hearty platter for two, or a good spot to pair with a drink, this could be a solid choice :)
