Watching black garlic age in six rice cookers: Danyang market bakery
In short
Black Garlic Salt Bread is a takeaway-only bakery at the far end of Guegyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. The writer ordered an Original Gift Set and Sample Set 2, packing two bags, and watched the owner aging black garlic in six electric rice cookers while waiting. With a hollow-bread lover and a filled-bread lover in the family, the set menu made it easy for everyone to pick their favorite.

Guegyeong Market is a must-stop whenever I'm in Danyang — it's basically a sightseeing market? A food market, really, so it's packed even on weekdays, let alone weekends. There's tons of good food, but one thing I always buy when I stop by is salt bread.

It's right at the far end of the market street — but honestly, you just walk straight down the street, so even if you're on foot it's easy to find! There's not much of a wait on weekdays, but on weekends there's almost always a line... which just shows how much of a must-stop it is when you're at Guegyeong Market.

Ordering the Original Gift Set + Sample Set 2
Ugh, that nutty, sweet bread smell hits your nose the moment you walk in, and after some deliberation I ordered the Original Gift Set and Sample Set 2. Since Black Garlic Salt Bread is takeout-only, even a long line moves fast — I loved that!

I tried the sample while waiting, and yep, delicious 🤍🤍🤍🤍

Write a receipt review, get ice cream
They don't just sell salt bread — they also carry Sanghamokjang ice cream made with 100% organic milk! And beyond selling it, if you write a Naver receipt review after buying a salt bread set, they give you the ice cream for free. (If ice cream isn't available, they'll swap it for bread.) The process is super quick and easy, so it's worth doing to grab some ice cream or extra bread.

Aging black garlic in six electric rice cookers
While waiting for my order to be packed, I looked around and noticed six electric rice cookers lined up. Turns out that's exactly how they age the black garlic! Danyang is actually famous for black garlic, and seeing the owner age the garlic in-house herself made me think — yep, this is a real deal spot.

How to get the ₩1,000-per-set discount
Anyone who's bought something from Danbbang Bakery or the Black Garlic Nurungji Fried Chicken shop, both in Guegyeong Market, gets ₩1,000 off a salt bread set ✌🏻 That's ₩1,000 off per set, so buying two sets means ₩2,000 off! Both of those shops are also must-stops in the market, so it's worth keeping this in mind and grabbing the discount too.

I ended up carrying home two bags, one per set haha haha.

A set solves it even when the whole family's tastes differ
I'm not really into breads with red bean paste or jam or other fillings inside, but the kids are the opposite — they love filled bread. Thanks to the set menu, everyone in the family got to try a bit of everything, which was great.
Original salt bread
The fundamental foundation of Black Garlic Salt Bread! Plain salt bread 🤍 To keep it at its freshest and best, they knead and bake it fresh every single day, making and selling it same-day. On top of that, none of their salt breads use preservatives, coloring, or any chemical additives at all, so it's safe even for little kids to eat.

Crispy outside, moist inside, with the butter flavor really coming through — pure honey-sweet perfection!

Garlic salt bread
One of the items in the Sample Set — garlic salt bread!! The garlic flavor plus a bit of sweetness gives it a texture like a soft garlic bread.

Black garlic salt bread
Last up, black garlic salt bread — Danyang is famous for black garlic, so making salt bread with it felt novel, and I figured it couldn't help but be delicious. Since they make the black garlic in-house too, every ingredient that goes into the salt bread is something you can trust and eat with peace of mind.

Wiped out the salt bread on the spot — haha haha haha. Next time I'll try the soboro (streusel) salt bread I haven't tasted yet! If you're looking for a must-visit spot at Danyang's Guegyeong Market, be sure to stop by Black Garlic Salt Bread.
