I was looking for good restaurants in Yullyang-dong, Cheongju and finally checked out Anmin Yullyang, a place I'd walked past many times but never tried. Turns out it was way better than expected — honestly my new favorite BBQ spot in the neighborhood now. Fresh domestic pork prepped daily, deep charcoal aroma, staff grilling everything for you, and a huge variety of side dishes — it was satisfying all around. Let me walk you through it.

Where is Anmin Yullyang? A quiet grill house just off the Yullyang-dong eating street

Anmin Yullyang sits a bit off Yullyang-dong's main eating street. I actually liked that it was slightly removed from the busy main road — much quieter. I'd recommend parking on a nearby side street or using the Yullyang-dong public parking tower.

The moment I walked in, the interior caught my eye first. I was expecting a typical BBQ joint, but it was way cleaner and more stylish than I imagined.

Clean wood-tone interior of Anmin Yullyang

The wood-tone interior gives it a cozy feel that would work great for a Yullyang-dong date, and it also seemed fine for a family meal out or a company dinner.

Generously spaced table seating at Anmin Yullyang

The tables were spaced generously and the seats were comfortable, so it was easy to chat with my boyfriend while eating. There's also a room area on one side, which would suit anyone looking for a Yullyang-dong group dinner or gathering spot.

Best of all, every table has its own individual brazier, so you feel nicely separated from other tables while you eat.

Anmin Yullyang menu: whole pig sets, cold ramen and spicy cold noodles

Anmin Yullyang's menu board with whole pig sets and à la carte options

The main set menus are the whole pig set (pork belly, neck, special cuts) and the half pig set (pork belly + neck + herbal pork skin). Beyond the sets, there are à la carte options too — whole pork belly, whole pork neck, assorted special cuts, pork skin, and pork jowl. The side menu had things you rarely see elsewhere, like a golden doenjang stew with crab, sundubu stew, soy ramen, cold ramen, cold noodle salad, and cheese fried rice — honestly I wanted to try all of them haha.

The drink menu is varied too — Ilpum Jinro, Hwayo, bokbunja, draft beer, cocktails — so it looks like a great option for a Yullyang-dong, Cheongju group dinner as well.

Side dishes and sauces at Anmin Yullyang: curry bean powder, pine flower salt and cumin

Various sauces and side dishes served with the meat

One of Anmin Yullyang's strengths is the sheer variety of sauces provided. Curry bean powder, pine flower salt, cumin, shiitake wasabi, salted hairtail guts, fish sauce blend, cheese fondue sauce, pickles, green onion kimchi, barley ssamjang, wrap greens, quick-pickled cabbage, and washed kimchi with citron-ginger and garlic pickle — all of it pairs well with the meat!

The table filled up with side dishes, and I was surprised every single one was good. Good side dishes usually mean the main dish will be good too, and eating these gave me full confidence the meat would deliver.

Green onion kimchi with a sharp garlic aroma

The green onion kimchi was so good I refilled it once! It had a sharp garlicky kick that paired really well with the meat.

Surprisingly, the quick-pickled cabbage came out sweet and tangy, almost like a whelk sauce. It went great with the meat wrapped together.

Pudding-textured steamed egg
A spoonful cross-section of the steamed egg

The steamed egg was the pudding-textured kind I love, seasoned just right and so delicious. There was a faint bonito flavor to it that gave it extra character!!

The doenjang (soybean paste) stew we ordered came out with an entire crab in it!

Inside the stew, packed with crab and bean sprouts

It was loaded with crab, bean sprouts, and vegetables, hearty enough to eat as a full meal with rice.

A plump, meat-filled crab from the stew

The crab meat was plump and sweet, and I really enjoyed it. The seasoning was spot on, and its savory depth went perfectly with rice. Highly recommend the doenjang stew!

Three servings of whole pork belly and the tableside grilling service

The ordered raw whole pork belly, 3 servings

We ordered 3 servings of whole pork belly. One of the best parts of Anmin Yullyang was the grilling service — staff grilled the meat and vegetables for us, which was genuinely so convenient.

You know that thing where conversation stalls at a BBQ place because someone has to keep flipping the meat, or you're anxious it might burn? Here, staff grill everything to the right thickness and doneness, so we could just sit back and focus on the meal.

Anmin Yullyang grills over charcoal, so the meat carried a subtle smoky aroma. Charcoal BBQ places are delicious but can come with worries about smoke and smell — the ventilation here was solid enough that smoke never became a real issue during the meal!

Whole pork belly grilling over charcoal

The pork belly, grilled over charcoal, came out golden on the outside and juicy inside — you could tell the juices were still locked in.

A piece of golden-grilled pork belly

The first bite of the finished meat was good enough to make me laugh haha lol — the subtle charcoal smokiness blended with the meaty flavor, and it was so juicy that even just dipped in pine flower salt it was delicious. Honestly it might be top 3 pork belly I've ever had..!

Grilled pork belly placed on a small brazier

Once grilled, the meat was placed on a small brazier. A little candle underneath kept it gently warm the whole time. Being able to eat every last piece warm was a nice touch.

The grilled vegetables came along too — the mushrooms were bursting with juice, and dipping them in pine flower salt was really good, while the garlic scapes had a subtle charcoal aroma soaked in. Eating vegetables alongside the meat made the whole combination even better.

Creamy draft beer and the best sauce combo: pine flower salt with cumin

Eating meat naturally made me crave a beer, so I ordered the creamy draft beer. Thanks to the smooth foam, the first sip was mellow and not too bitter, going down easily with the pork belly. Highly recommend the draft beer!

There were plenty of sauces and sides to pair with the meat too. The quick-pickled cabbage was sweet and tangy, adding a refreshing note alongside the pork belly.

The fish sauce blend wasn't salty at all and added a nice savory depth.

The cheese fondue sauce was sweet and creamy, giving the pork belly a totally different flavor from the usual.

Personally, dipping it in pine flower salt was still my favorite combo. But dipping it in pine flower salt together with cumin turned out to be surprisingly great too?? If you're a fan of cumin, definitely give this combination a try!!

Is Anmin Yullyang worth it for a Yullyang-dong date?

Visiting Anmin Yullyang in person, I was satisfied all around — the taste of the meat, the atmosphere, and the service. Fresh domestic pork prepped daily and grilled over charcoal for deep flavor, plus staff handling the grilling so you can eat comfortably — that combination really stood out. If you're looking for a Yullyang-dong pork belly restaurant, a Yullyang-dong date spot, a Cheongju family dinner place, or a Yullyang-dong group dinner venue, Anmin Yullyang is worth checking out. I enjoyed it enough that I'd love to come back and try the other pork dishes next time haha.
