When I'm trying to figure out what to eat for dinner in Unjeong, Paju, lamb skewers are one of those things that keep popping into my head. This time I went to Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao (산내마을양꼬치&칭따오), over in the Unjeong Sannaemaeul area.

I thought it was a place that only served lamb skewers, but once I looked at the menu, they actually had all kinds of Chinese dishes too, so it seemed like a good spot to handle both a meal and drinks in one visit. Given that both "lamb skewer" and "Qingdao" are literally in the name, the vibe felt perfect for dropping by in the evening for skewers with a cold beer.

The dishes I tried this time were lamb skewers, mala lamb skewers, grilled bread, and corn noodles. I generally like lamb skewers, so I ordered everything from the regular ones to the spicy mala version, and since each dish had a slightly different vibe, it was fun ordering a variety.

Location, parking, and hours at Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao

Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao is located on the 2nd floor, Unit 205, World Tower 3, 573 Chaekhyanggi-ro, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. It's right in the main commercial area of Unjeong Sannaemaeul, so it's a decent spot to land on when you're looking for somewhere to eat nearby.

You can also use the building's underground parking lot, and it's listed as offering free parking, so it's fairly convenient even if you're driving. Current hours run from 3:30 PM to 1:00 AM the next day, which works well for dinner or a late-night drink. Mondays are listed as the regular closing day, so keep that in mind before visiting.

What's the vibe inside?

Walking in, it had that distinct lamb-skewer-restaurant feel while still being generally comfortable to eat in. You'd think a lamb skewer place would mean a cramped space geared mainly toward drinking snacks, but this spot looked usable for all kinds of occasions — family meals, meals with friends, or a casual drink.

Looking at the store info, reviews actually cover a range of visit purposes — dinner, meal gatherings, drinking gatherings, family outings, and more. So rather than just a spot to eat lamb skewers, it struck me as worth considering when looking for restaurants and bars in Unjeong New Town.

Menu lineup and what we ordered

One of the strengths of Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao is that beyond lamb skewers, they have a wide range of Chinese dishes too. Along with regular lamb skewers, there's mala lamb skewers, lamb rib skewers, and chicken wing skewers, plus dishes like guobaorou (sweet and sour pork), mala tang, mala xiangguo, and stir-fried dried tofu. So it looked like a good place for a group to each order what they're in the mood for.

Rather than ordering too much, we focused on lamb skewers and went with lamb skewers + mala lamb skewers + grilled bread + corn noodles. Based on the current menu, both the regular and mala lamb skewers are sold in units of 8 skewers.

Regular lamb skewers — how was the gamey smell?

First up, the lamb skewers. Of course, when you come to a lamb skewer place, you have to start with the basic version. Watching the skewers sit over charcoal, spinning automatically as they cook, definitely got my appetite going.

As they turned golden brown, the meat's surface got glossy and that distinctive savory lamb-skewer smell came up. Dipping a well-cooked skewer in cumin salt, I could taste both the lamb's characteristic flavor and the spice at the same time.

I think the most important things for lamb skewers are the gamey smell and the texture, and personally, this wasn't an overwhelmingly strong-smelling style — it was fairly easy to eat. If you're trying lamb skewers for the first time, starting with the regular version seems like a good idea.

How is mala different from the regular lamb skewers?

Next, the mala lamb skewers we ordered alongside. So many people are into mala these days. I like that numbing, spice-heavy mala flavor myself, so I ordered it together with the regular skewers.

Compared to the regular skewers, the aroma and flavor presence were definitely stronger — the same lamb, but a completely different mood. The meat's own clean flavor combined with mala's distinctive tingling spiciness, and it seemed like it would go great with beer.

Especially if you're eating regular lamb skewers for a while, you might start craving something different, and that's when switching over to mala skewers, one at a time, really hits the spot. If you're looking for restaurants and meat spots in Unjeong and prefer something a bit more intense than plain lamb skewers, I'd recommend ordering mala lamb skewers alongside.

Finishing with corn noodles, ₩8,000

After you've had your fill of meat and side dishes, it just feels incomplete without some kind of noodle dish. We ordered corn noodles at the end. After eating the regular and mala lamb skewers, having warm broth and noodles together was the perfect way to close out the meal.

Unlike when you just keep eating skewers, adding noodles made the whole meal feel a lot more substantial. According to the current menu info, the warm corn noodles are priced at ₩8,000, and it's described as a spicy, refreshing broth dish with corn noodles topped with kimchi and vegetables.

Personally, when I go for lamb skewers, I always like to finish with a proper meal item like noodles or rice, so I was glad we ended with corn noodles this time too.

Grilled bread was a nice side

One dish that was personally fun this time was the grilled bread. When you're eating lamb skewers, you don't want to just eat meat the whole time, and the grilled bread filled that role nicely.

It had that savory aroma of bread grilled over fire, lightly toasted on the outside and soft on the inside, so it was good to eat in between skewers. Paired with lamb skewers, it offered a completely different texture from the meat, making it a good order when you want variety in your spread.

Can you get Chinese dishes here too, not just lamb skewers?

As the name suggests, Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao is centered around lamb skewers, but looking through the menu, there's actually a fairly wide range of Chinese dishes too. So it seemed like a solid choice for anyone looking for good Chinese food in Paju.

Beyond lamb skewers, you can order various Chinese dishes together, like guobaorou, mala tang, mala xiangguo, and stir-fried dried tofu, so if you're visiting with a group, it's easy to split up the ordering. Pairing lamb skewers with a noodle dish like we did works well, and if there are several of you, adding a Chinese dish on top of the skewers seems like a great idea too.

To sum up

Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao turned out to be a great lamb skewer spot in Unjeong Sannaemaeul for whenever a lamb skewer craving hits. We ordered lamb skewers, mala lamb skewers, grilled bread, and corn noodles this time, and it was great being able to enjoy both the regular and mala flavors, add grilled bread in between, and finish things off with a filling bowl of corn noodles.

I especially liked that you can order a variety of Chinese dishes alongside the lamb skewers. It's a good spot for dinner, and it also works well for a casual drink with a Qingdao beer, so it seems like a solid pick for anyone searching for restaurants and bars in Unjeong New Town.

If you're craving lamb skewers in Unjeong, Paju, and want something a bit different from the usual meat menu, try the lamb skewer and mala lamb skewer combo at Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao. If you like lamb skewers, I'd recommend mixing one order of regular skewers with one order of mala skewers, and finishing with corn noodles at the end.
