Yeongdeungpo bar with baseball on TV: hanwoo yukhoe at Yeokjeon

On a weekday evening after work, my wife and I headed to Yeokjeon Pojangmacha Yeongdeungpo, which we'd heard is quite the hot spot in Yeongdeungpo, for tasty snacks and a cold drink to wash away the day's fatigue.

In weather this cool, you can't help but crave the warm, nostalgic feel of a pojangmacha (street-cart-style bar) with a spicy, hearty stew, and word around Yeongdeungpo Station was that this place has a varied menu and great value for money — so here we went.

How to find Yeokjeon Pojangmacha Yeongdeungpo from Yeongdeungpo Station

Once we got near the storefront, a big retro-style sign in red reading 'Korea's No. 1 Yeokjeon Pojangmacha' caught our eye from far away.

The sign was huge and the lighting so vivid that even on our first visit we found it without a single wrong turn, and even before stepping inside we could already feel that hip, must-try pojangmacha energy.

On the entrance stairs, witty phrases like "If you're stingy, you'll flop" and "Approved by celebrities" were written on every step, putting us in a cheerful mood before we even reached the top.

Inside Yeokjeon Pojangmacha: seating and room for group dinners

Stepping inside, the space was even bigger and more pleasant than expected.

Orange pojangmacha tent-style awnings, cozy string lights, and retro posters covering the walls all came together beautifully — a modern, stylish reinterpretation of the warm old-school pojangmacha atmosphere.

With plenty of round stainless steel tables and comfy backed chairs, it seemed great for a cozy date like ours, and just as suited to serving as a group bar near Yeongdeungpo Station or a company dinner spot for nearby office workers.

What we ordered: 2,900 won draft beer and 3,900 won soju

Sitting down and checking the table-order tablet, we saw a hard-to-believe deal: as part of a 365-day event, icy draft beer was ₩2,900 and icy soju was ₩3,900.

With prices this high everywhere else these days, it felt great to drink without worrying about the bill, and the food menu was just as varied, from classic pojangmacha snacks to hearty full dishes.

We ordered the filling, spicy boneless dakdoritang (chicken stew) and the fresh hanwoo (Korean beef) yukhoe (raw beef) as our mains, and started with two icy draft beers to wash away the day's thirst in one go.

Icy draft beer at 2,900 won

First to arrive was the icy draft beer, served in a special glass frozen solid all the way to the handle.

Just looking at it felt refreshing, and the moment I took a careful sip, a jolt of crisp coldness shot straight up to my head — all the stress from the workday melted away in an instant.

Hanwoo yukhoe (Korean beef tartare)

Next up on the table was the hanwoo yukhoe, neatly arranged on a large brass-colored round plate.

The beef looked freshly sliced, glossy red and full of texture, topped nicely with toasted sesame seeds and egg yolk, and served with crisp pear, crunchy dried seaweed, black sesame sauce and wasabi — a perfect combination.

After popping the yolk and mixing it evenly, then wrapping the beef and julienned pear in the seaweed, there was no off flavor or fishiness at all — just a chewy texture and a deep, savory richness that filled the mouth the more you chewed.

The beef was so fresh it rivaled a dedicated butcher's restaurant, and my wife kept raving about how good it was, chopsticks never stopping.

Boneless dakdoritang (Korean chicken stew)

Finally, today's main dish — boneless dakdoritang — arrived piled high in a large hot pot, set right on the gas burner.

The deep red, rich broth was generously loaded with tender boneless chicken, plus enoki mushrooms, king oyster mushrooms, chewy rice cakes, glass noodles, udon noodles, springy bunmoja noodles, and cute quail eggs — the visual alone was overwhelming.

Once it came to a bubbling boil, one spoonful of the broth revealed a rich chicken stock base — spicy, savory and deeply comforting, pure soul food.

Since it was boneless, tender chicken, it was so easy to eat, and the thick seasoning soaked in nicely, staying moist and soft with every bite.

Fishing out the springy noodles, chewy rice cakes and glass noodles was fun in itself, and it worked just as well as a hearty dinner as it did as a drinking snack. My wife and I happily polished off every last drop of the broth.

Is Yeokjeon Pojangmacha worth it as a Yeongdeungpo bar?

Between the retro, hip interior, the wallet-friendly drink prices, the friendly staff, and the generous, delicious variety of food, it was a night that exceeded expectations in every way.
