Korean set meal near Chowol Station, Gwangju: Oneuldo Utja Chowol

In short

Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a Korean restaurant on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, serving duruchigi (spicy stir-fried meat) with sotbap (clay-pot rice). On a rainy day the writer ordered pork duruchigi for two at 25,000 won, a jumbo rolled omelet at 10,000 won and freshly cooked sotbap for two at 4,000 won, and finished everything down to the scallions, the meat and the crisp rice crust. With single-variety suhyangmi rice and a generous amount of pork, Oneuldo Utja Chowol satisfies right down to the last spoonful of rice.

This week on a rainy day, I really wanted something hot and hearty. Well-fermented kimchi, domestic fresh pork, and a spicy stir-fry in a secret sauce, paired with freshly cooked sotbap (stone-pot rice) — the perfect combo 👍🏻 Let me introduce a Chowol-eup restaurant, 'Oneuldo Utja Chowol' :)

Inside Oneuldo Utja Chowol: solo diners, work lunches and families

Oneuldo Utja Chowol can seat groups of 2, 4, or 8. One wall is a full window, giving a great open feel, and the interior mixes brick and wood for a warm, cozy space. There were solo diners at lunchtime, and it looked like a lot of coworkers and families visit too.

Oneuldo Utja Chowol cooks its sotbap with suhyangmi rice

The Chowol-eup restaurant Oneuldo Utja Chowol has truly excellent sotbap 😁 They said they use single-variety sujeongmi rice, believing that kimchi jjigae and duruchigi absolutely need delicious rice to match.

If the basic side dishes they set out first run low, you can just use the self-service corner.

Oneuldo Utja is a one-sotbap-per-person restaurant, and they said ordering one sotbap per person gets you free self-bar rice refills ☺️ You always end up ordering rice with duruchigi anyway, so I really liked this.

Pork duruchigi for two: how much meat is under the scallions?

The pork duruchigi (for 2) at ₩25,000 first surprises you with the tall pile of shredded scallions on top, and then surprises you again when you flip it over and see the amount of meat underneath haha

I also ordered the jumbo rolled egg omelet to go with it, and the two together are such a great match ♥︎

Table setting with duruchigi and jumbo rolled egg omelet

Meat, well-fermented kimchi, bean sprouts, onion, shredded scallions, and enoki mushrooms — all these ingredients with different textures stir-fried together at once, how convenient and delicious is that ꔛ

When they bring the sotbap, the smell is incredible!! A savory scorched-rice aroma wafting up 😋 They pour in hot water first before you start.

This is a combo every Korean is bound to love haha 🤍 The longer you simmer it, the deeper the sauce soaks in, and once it reduces down just right, the umami flavor is amazing.

The 10,000-won jumbo rolled omelet, cooked to order

An omelet that goes well no matter how you eat it! Since it's made fresh right after ordering, it's warm and soft — delicious on its own, and heavenly with duruchigi...

With all the bean sprouts and shredded scallions packed in, it also gives off kongnamul-bulgogi vibes, which I liked. The meat had a great ratio of fat to lean, giving a savory flavor with just the right amount of oiliness that was addictive, and the generous enoki mushrooms made for fun texture too.

Finishing the meal with nurungji, the crisp rice crust from the pot

The scorched rice crust here is the real deal... it was so good I felt like I'd be happy just drinking the rice water on its own!

Leftover meat at the end of the duruchigi meal

I piled on as much as I wanted, and I was almost dumbfounded to see meat left over at the end 🫶🏻 I get it now — with ingredients this generously served, of course customers keep flocking here.

Why Oneuldo Utja Chowol is worth the trip in Chowol-eup

Oneuldo Utja Chowol's pork duruchigi is loaded with well-fermented kimchi, domestic pork with a great fat-to-lean ratio, a secret sauce, onion, bean sprouts, shredded scallions, and enoki mushrooms — so generously that meat was left over at the end. The combo with the jumbo rolled egg omelet is guaranteed to be delicious ♥︎ Made right after ordering, it's warm and soft and pairs beautifully. And no matter how good the kimchi jjigae or duruchigi is, isn't it a letdown if the rice isn't great?? Oneuldo Utja prepares sotbap with single-variety sujeongmi rice to elevate the rice, so I was satisfied on every front. If you're looking for a Chowol-eup restaurant, I'd recommend visiting 'Oneuldo Utja Chowol' :)
