Late-evening pickup of 5 breads at Tomoru Bakery, Songdo

In short

Tomoru Bakery is a bakery in Songdo, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, near the Coast Guard Headquarters, and a participating store in the rice-flour bread pilgrimage. Visiting after work in the late evening, the writer packed up five kinds of bread — white castella, basil tomato, kkamang-i (squid ink bread), myeongran daepa baguette, and pizza bread — and found the cream and toppings well balanced, so both the plain breads and the savory ones stayed enjoyable to the last bite.

If you're a self-proclaimed bread lover, you've got to have a go-to bakery list for every neighborhood, right? This time I visited Tomoru Bakery, a famous name among Songdo bread lovers and a must-stop on the bread pilgrimage route, near Songdo Central Park.

On my honor as a bread lover, here's my truly honest, no-holds-barred review haha.

Location — right in front of the Coast Guard Headquarters bus stop

If you're a Songdo local, you probably already know this spot — it's in the food alley right near the Coast Guard Headquarters. If you'd rather not walk, just take the bus to the Coast Guard Headquarters stop and the shop is right in front of you.

There are lots of good restaurants around and it's close to Central Park too, so it's perfect for a walk-and-stop, or if you're looking for a bakery near Incheondaehak-ro Station. I also noticed they've set up separate outdoor tables so you can sit and eat outside.

Browsing the display case — from salt bread to Dubai chocolate baguette

Walking in and scanning the shelves with a tray in hand, the delicious smell nearly knocked me out haha. I'm...in a hurry...I can already see bread!!

The first thing that caught my eye was the white castella bread. Only two were left, so I grabbed one without hesitation haha.

From the buttery basic salt bread (₩2,400) to the salty-sweet myeongran (pollack roe) salt bread (₩3,500), the garlic cheese salt bread dipped in a sweet garlic sauce (₩3,000), and the bacon potato salt bread packed with fluffy potato salad and bacon (₩3,500) — the salt bread lineup alone was huge! It's clearly one of their best-selling categories.

Next to the myeongran daepa baguette (₩5,500) I picked, there was also the coconut cream cheese (₩6,000), a best-seller sandwiched with soft cream cheese and whipped cream, and the chocolate baguette (₩6,000) loaded with Valrhona chocolate — with a handwritten tip from the owner saying it's amazing dipped in the store's whipped cream haha. This chocolate baguette is also one of their best sellers, and you could tell just by looking that it was packed with chocolate. There was even a Dubai chocolate baguette (₩8,900), reflecting the hottest dessert trend right now — anyone who loves the pistachio-chocolate combo would grab this without question!

There was also a sweet, moist Mont Blanc (₩5,800), a crisp, well-layered croissant (₩3,800), a savory corn bread loaf (₩5,000), a nostalgic Simon castella (₩3,600), and two kinds of pizza bread — the basic leaf-shaped pizza bread (₩4,500) and a crispy pastry pizza bread (₩4,800) — so it was great to pick whatever suited my mood. From what I found, their plain loaf bread and morning rolls are also famous for being delicious. Next time I'll try the corn bread loaf too. The egg tarts looked so crisp I seriously debated buying one.

Packed and ready — go late in the evening and a lot of bread is already gone

Packed bread bags and tray

I visited a bit late in the evening after work, and sure enough, as a popular bakery, a lot of the shelves were already emptied out. Thankfully, the breads I really wanted to try had miraculously survived, so I quickly loaded them onto my tray!

Notice explaining the use of domestic rice flour

While packing up, I noticed this is a participating store in the rice-flour bread pilgrimage organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs! It said that using domestic rice flour instead of imported wheat flour makes the pastries easier on the stomach without the gluten load, and makes the bread chewier — as a bread lover, I can't help but root for this kind of healthy, tasty bread pilgrimage haha.

Five breads laid out at home

The bread I brought home came to five kinds total: white castella, basil tomato, kkamang-i, myeongran daepa baguette, and the visually stunning pizza bread!

Plain breads first — white castella and basil tomato

I started with the plain breads that stay easy to eat without getting old.

White castella

Just look at it — white as snow and fluffy as a cloud. One bite in and my eyes flew open! You know how a lot of trendy breads on social media these days stuff the cream in so heavily that after two or three bites it gets sickeningly rich? This place really nailed the cream balance. It wasn't overly sweet or intense — just soft and pillowy, and paired with an Americano it practically melted away in my mouth before I could even chew haha. It's the kind of gentle, elegant sweetness anyone would like, no matter their taste.

Basil tomato

Looking at the cross-section, it was packed with fragrant basil pesto, salty black olives, umami-rich sun-dried tomato, and cheese. The texture was moist and mild, so it would work great as a light meal replacement or as a healthy carb to pair with a salad! Here's a tip — instead of eating it as is, try warming it briefly in the air fryer! The outside gets as crisp as freshly baked baguette, and the tomato and olive juices inside come alive warm, doubling the flavor 👍.

Peak saltiness! Real bold-flavor bread time 🍕🔥

If the breads I had so far were mild and plain enough to keep eating without tiring, from here on it's real bold-flavor time that gets the saliva going haha.

Myeongran daepa baguette

Most myeongran (pollack roe) baguettes at bakeries lean salty and oily, but adding daepa (green onion) here was a total masterstroke! Between the baguette layers there's a deep, umami-packed savory myeongran sauce, and the fragrant, sharp bite of the green onion backs it up perfectly so it never gets greasy. The flavor was much richer and cleaner, and it got more appealing the more I chewed.

Pizza bread

The pizza bread surprised me the moment I picked it up — it was seriously heavy haha. It's a large bread that covers your whole palm, topped edge-to-edge with glossy yellow cheddar cheese. Taking a big bite, the sausage popped, and the corn kernels and sweet-and-sour pickles balanced it out well, so I finished the whole thing without getting tired of it, sweet and salty all the way.

The kkamang-i, made with a squid-ink dough for a chewy texture, blended cream cheese and walnuts' deep flavor beautifully — perfect for snacking!

Honest overall review and visiting tips

Eating everything from the soft white castella to the savory breads, what stood out was that Tomoru Bakery really nails the ratio of ingredients and seasoning in every bread. Unlike a lot of trendy breads these days that overload on cream and toppings until they get sickening, the base dough here keeps its chew, and the ingredients blend harmoniously — very satisfying. It's genuinely a great restaurant near Songdo Central Park and a bakery worth putting on any bread pilgrimage list!

  • If you go in the evening after work, popular breads may already be sold out — visit earlier in the afternoon if you want a wide selection.
  • Warm the basil tomato bread briefly in the air fryer at 180°C for 3–4 minutes for a warm, crispy version.
  • The owner's tip: dip the chocolate baguette in the store's whipped cream for extra deliciousness.
