Korean restaurant near Hwadamsup for kimchi jjigae: Oneuldo Utja
In short
Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and duruchigi (stir-fried pork) restaurant on the ground floor of the building beside Chowol Sports Town on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. After a day at Hwadamsup, the writer ordered the signature old-style kimchi jjigae with freshly cooked sotbap (stone-pot rice) for 12,000 won and the cheese jumbo egg roll for 12,000 won, and found tangy, spicy kimchi, three chunks of fresh domestic Korean pork and sungnyung (scorched rice tea) to finish. With its own parking lot and a self-serve bar, Oneuldo Utja Chowol works well as a meal stop on a Hwadamsup or Gonjiam outing.

Today's post is a review of Oneuldo Utja Chowol, a restaurant in Chowol-eup near Hwadamsup. It has its own parking lot too.
Where is Oneuldo Utja Chowol, and how do you get there from Hwadamsup?

Oneuldo Utja Chowol sits right next to Chowol Sports Town, on the ground floor of a roadside building. It's about 10 minutes from Gonjiam IC, 15 minutes from Gonjiam Station, and 10–15 minutes from Hwadamsup and Rolling Hills CC, making it a great nearby spot to grab a meal. Today I went to Hwadamsup first and then stopped by this restaurant nearby.
Oneuldo Utja Chowol menu prices and add-ons

Here's the Oneuldo Utja menu. They have pork duruchigi (stir-fried spicy pork), squid duruchigi, squid-and-pork duruchigi, old-style kimchi jjigae, jumbo egg roll, and cheese jumbo egg roll. Add-on toppings include ramyeon noodles, tofu, glass noodles, Spam, and sausage ham. I personally tried adding ham, which turns it more into a budae jjigae (army stew) style — if you love budae jjigae, I'd recommend adding ham to your kimchi jjigae here too.
Side dishes and the self-serve bar at Oneuldo Utja Chowol

Oneuldo Utja's side dishes come out neat and tidy. There's a self-serve bar too, so you can help yourself to as much as you like without hesitation.

There's also rice and soup, so anyone who wants a refill can help themselves. (If you order one sotbap per person, extra rice from the self-serve bar is free.)
Inside Oneuldo Utja Chowol: group gatherings and family meals

The inside of Oneuldo Utja Chowol is really clean. I liked the wide spacing between tables, and there are plenty of group tables, so it also works well for group get-togethers or family dining.
There's a spot set aside for baby chairs too.
Old-style kimchi jjigae with sotbap, 12,000 won

Oneuldo Utja's signature dish: old-style kimchi jjigae with freshly cooked sotbap, priced at ₩12,000.

It's simmered down with domestic Korean pork and well-fermented kimchi, an easy-to-eat-every-day kind of kimchi jjigae, plus freshly cooked sotbap — both together for ₩12,000.

First off, the portion of the old-style kimchi jjigae is really generous. And above all, the kimchi itself is both plentiful and genuinely delicious. It's spicy and sharp in a way that keeps you coming back for more spoonfuls — the kind of flavor that stays on your mind. It's clearly well-fermented too — a real kimchi standout.

The meat is domestic Korean pork in three large chunks, with a nice balance between fat and lean meat.

Spicy, sharp, and refreshing — a kimchi jjigae style you really wouldn't get tired of eating every day. I officially declare this a kimchi jjigae must-visit in Gwangju, Gyeonggi. The best!!

Freshly cooked sotbap and the sungnyung finish
The second reason I'm calling this a Chowol-eup must-visit is the freshly cooked sotbap. Here, you can enjoy kimchi jjigae and freshly cooked sotbap together at a really good price.

The rice, freshly cooked, is fluffy and warm — it feels like being treated to something special. Oneuldo Utja Chowol is delicious even if you just eat the rice on its own.

Pile the warm, fluffy rice with the tasty meat and kimchi, and you'll polish off a whole bowl in no time.

Finally, there's even sungnyung to finish things off — dessert sorted too.
Cheese jumbo egg roll, 12,000 won

Oneuldo Utja's cheese jumbo egg roll, priced at ₩12,000.

Visited Oneuldo Utja and didn't order the egg roll?! Then you haven't really eaten here properly.
True to its name, the cheese jumbo egg roll is genuinely jumbo-sized. And as big as it is, it's also packed with a jumbo amount of cheese.

It's made fresh right after you order, so you get to enjoy it warm and delicious, as always.
Is Oneuldo Utja Chowol worth a stop after Hwadamsup?
Final verdict! Oneuldo Utja Chowol — a must-visit in Chowol-eup, near Gonjiam, and near Hwadamsup. The kimchi jjigae is spicy, sharp, and refreshing, the kind you wouldn't get tired of every day. The meat being domestic Korean pork makes it even better. Add the freshly cooked sotbap on top and it all feels like a treat. I always order the jumbo egg roll here too — true to its name, it's jumbo-sized, so I always leave full and satisfied.
