Being a popular restaurant, waiting is possible through Catch Table, but the time I visited I got lucky — no wait, straight in. Going a little before the usual dinner rush is just basic strategy, haha.

Partitioned tables downstairs, private rooms and a kids' play room upstairs

The 1st floor of Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch has partitions between tables, and the 2nd floor is made up of private rooms. There's also a kids' play room, which is great for visiting with children.

Having partitions between tables meant no encroaching on other tables' space, giving a nice private feeling. It seemed like it would work well for a family dinner, a friends' gathering, or a group work dinner. The inner seats look out at a mountain view through the window, so you can enjoy the greenery while eating — though I couldn't get a photo since those seats were already taken.

The 2nd floor is made up of private rooms, which looked good for a quiet meal. It seemed well-suited for family gatherings, meals with parents, or group get-togethers. There's also a kids' play room that's great for visiting with children.

What's on the self-serve bar: wrap vegetables and side dishes

At Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch, you can easily grab extra side dishes from the self-serve bar whenever you run low. The variety and freshness of the wrap vegetables in particular were great.

I can't even imagine how good it would be to wrap the meat in kale, haha. None of the vegetables were wilted or soft, which gave the sense that the self-serve bar is kept nicely maintained.

Jeongwon galbi for 2 on a ductless charcoal grill

We ordered 2 servings of jeongwon galbi. The charcoal is really excellent. There's no chimney — the smoke vents out sideways instead — so it doesn't block the view. And with no pole blocking the face of the person across from you, it was comfortable to chat while sitting face to face.

How to grill seasoned galbi properly

With pork galbi, it's important to flip it often from the moment it goes on the fire so it doesn't burn. Lightly grill each side first, then cut it into bite-sized pieces and keep flipping as you grill. Once it turns a nice golden brown with a glossy sheen, that's your cue to dig in.

Fully grilled pork galbi with a golden, glossy finish

The meat is tender and the seasoning soaks all the way through, so the sweet and salty flavor spreads in your mouth the more you chew. Grilled over charcoal, the seasoning caramelizes into a golden color, adding a sweet depth and a subtle smoky aroma — genuinely delicious. Put a piece on white rice and it disappears in no time.

Wrapping the meat in kale with a green chili and some garlic makes for varied textures, and the sharp garlic aroma pairs really well with the seasoned galbi.

It also goes great with perilla leaf pickles. The salty, fragrant perilla leaves clean up your palate, which just makes you reach for another bite of seasoned galbi. :)

Dessert doenjang jjigae and mul naengmyeon

For dessert we ordered doenjang jjigae and mul naengmyeon. The slush of ice in the mul naengmyeon was intense.

One sip of the broth and the coolness runs straight down to your stomach. Picking up the noodles, they come up with bits of ice still clinging to them — that's how cold it is.

I tried a piece of meat along with the noodles too. Naengmyeon with seasoned galbi is an unbeatable combo. Cool noodles paired with salty-sweet galbi — that combination is just too good.

Toothpicks and dental floss were thoughtfully provided, so you can eat well and keep your dignity intact afterward. ^-^ There's also plum tea available as a palate cleanser.
