Kimchi jjigae restaurant near Chowol Station for three: Oneuldo Utja
In short
Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a duruchigi (stir-fried pork) and kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) restaurant near Chowol Station in Gwangju, Gyeonggi. A place the writer usually visits with her husband, this time she came with her mom and sister and the three of them ordered pork duruchigi and kimchi jjigae together, alternating between the two differently seasoned dishes so neither got boring. Even her mom, who is sensitive to the smell of meat, ate happily and praised Oneuldo Utja Chowol.

A kimchi jjigae place I start craving as the weather cools down — Oneuldo Utja, a duruchigi and kimchi jjigae specialist near Chowol Station. I usually go with just my husband, but it's so good that this time I brought my mom and sister along too, and they both ate happily and praised the place!!
Let me go through what we ordered that day, plus the atmosphere, parking, banchan, and staff service one by one.
Where is Oneuldo Utja Chowol, and what about hours and parking?
Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a ground-floor restaurant on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. It's open from 11am to 10pm, with last order at 8:50pm. It was closed on September 25 for Chuseok.

Parking is available right in front of the restaurant. As lunch hour kicked in around 11:30am, cars started filling in one by one—

—and by noon the lot was completely full, showing just how popular this Chowol Station favorite is. It's my favorite kimchi jjigae place in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, so I keep coming back, and it's always packed no matter when I visit.
Why order duruchigi and kimchi jjigae together?

Both the duruchigi (stir-fried pork) and kimchi jjigae here are delicious. You might think the sauces are similar, but duruchigi is sweet and spicy while kimchi jjigae is tangy and spicy — clearly different seasonings, so I recommend ordering both together.

Note that sotbap (pot rice) isn't included with duruchigi, only with kimchi jjigae, so duruchigi orders need to add it separately. This sotbap is really nutty and chewy — much better than regular steamed rice.
What banchan comes with the meal at Oneuldo Utja Chowol?

The banchan at Oneuldo Utja Chowol are cucumber, peppers, dried radish, and pickled garlic — I really love the pickled garlic here. It's not too spicy and has just the right tangy kick, perfect for cleansing the palate.

You can self-refill any side dish that runs low!
Kimchi jjigae review: the milder of the two dishes

The kimchi jjigae came out first. Don't eat it right away—keep it simmering on low heat and it gets even better. Adding ramyeon noodles boosts the umami, but since we'd also ordered duruchigi that day, we skipped the noodles.

Oneuldo Utja doesn't skimp on kimchi in their jjigae — it's really packed in, giving the broth an incredible flavor. It's less spicy than the duruchigi, so if you can't handle heat well, I'd recommend the kimchi jjigae over the duruchigi.
The pork inside is cut into big chunks, so you can just snip them into bite-size pieces with scissors. Since they use only 100% domestic fresh pork rather than imported frozen meat, there's zero gamey or off smell.

It's tender, not chewy, so the texture and taste are both great — even my mom, who's usually sensitive to meat smells, ate it happily.
Pork duruchigi review: made with separately aged kimchi

There was also a version with squid added, but we ordered the plain pork duruchigi. It came piled high with bean sprouts and shredded scallions—you could really tell they don't skimp on ingredients.
There's kimchi in the duruchigi too. Oneuldo Utja has a separate kimchi storage, so they use aged kimchi—and notably, they use different kimchi for the jjigae versus the duruchigi, giving each a distinct seasoning.
So while the broth-free, sweet-spicy stir-fry duruchigi cooks alongside the deep, umami-rich kimchi jjigae with its well-aged kimchi—both simmering together on the table!

The sauce coats the meat well, so it goes great with rice, and if you like Korean food, it's a familiar yet satisfying dish.

Since it's a saucy meat dish, eating it with rice naturally balances the seasoning, and wrapping it in lettuce makes it feel like a healthy meal—like you had a proper, full meal.
Best order combination for three people
Eating a bite of duruchigi, then a spoonful of rice, then in between a spoonful of kimchi jjigae broth—this rotation never got old, and I kept reaching for more. Personally, I felt that for three people, two servings of pork duruchigi plus a kimchi jjigae on the side is a solid combo.
The rice at Oneuldo Utja uses suhyangmi rice instead of regular rice, so when eaten as nurungji (scorched rice) it's even nuttier, with a clean, savory aroma—a sotbap that's delicious on its own.
Pour in hot water for nurungji sungnyung (scorched rice tea) and the meal feels complete and satisfying! If you love Korean food, need a crowd-pleasing dish for a group, or are craving something spicy, this Chowol Station favorite, Oneuldo Utja, is worth a visit. Next time I want to try the squid duruchigi too, haha.
