Daegu Korean restaurant: opening-run no wait for squid-pork stir-fry

Today I'm sharing a Korean food story from Banwoldang. This time I got a great chance to visit Banwoldang Bujasikdang (반월당부자식당). I'd heard locals go here a lot, and my friends had told me it was delicious, so I'd been curious about this place for a while haha. Needless to say, I went in with pretty high expectations.

Exterior and parking — worth driving?

It's close to Banwoldang Station, so it's easy to reach by public transit. There are about 3 parking spots in front of the building, which isn't many. The road leading in isn't very wide either, so personally I'd recommend just using a nearby paid parking lot for peace of mind. Note that there's no parking fee support.

Go at opening time to skip the wait

I heard there could be a wait, so we timed our visit for opening. We ended up being the second customers that day! If you want to avoid waiting, showing up right at opening is a good move. The interior was bigger than I expected with lots of tables, and there was a private room too, which was nice.

Menu lineup

Bujasikdang's signature dishes are buja seokgalbi (short ribs), fire-grilled squid stir-fry, and fire-grilled pork stir-fry. Both the squid and pork stir-fry come in mild or spicy, and ordering a main dish comes with a country-style cheonggukjang stew on the side. There's also a solo menu of cheonggukjang stew & bibimbap, plus extras like cheonggukjang stew, buja bibimbap, and a black rice bowl. Since we both love squid and pork, we ordered the combo squid-pork stir-fry so we could enjoy both 🤍

Side dishes and the self-serve wrap bar

While waiting for the food, the side dishes came out first — and wow, I liked these from the start. Everything looked neatly arranged and tasted great across the board. Best of all, they gave a generous portion of sides right from the beginning. The wrap ingredients are self-serve — you go grab them yourself from the bar, where lettuce, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and peppers were ready.

How's the hot-plate squid-pork stir-fry?

Finally, the squid-pork stir-fry arrived. Sizzling away on the hot plate, it looked delicious just from the visual. And since it's on a hot plate, the food stayed warm the whole time we ate, which I really liked.

The taste was moderately spicy with a subtle smoky char. It wasn't overwhelmingly spicy — just the right flavor to eat with rice! Since we got both squid and pork in one dish, we felt like we'd made the right menu choice haha.

And the rice being black rice was exactly my thing 🤍 Piling a bite of the stir-fry onto the rice, then following it with a spoonful of cheonggukjang — truly filling!!

Final verdict

I visited Banwoldang Bujasikdang after hearing raves from friends, and once I tried it myself, I got why locals flock here. Access is easy near Banwoldang Station, and everything from the side dishes to the main was clean and tasty. I especially loved the combo of squid-pork stir-fry + cheonggukjang + black rice, and the hot plate kept everything warm to the last bite.
