I found this place while searching for good makchang (grilled pork intestine) spots in Daegu. I'd heard it had an old-school vibe and great makchang, so I went — but once I got there, turns out the beef short rib is pretty famous too!

I noticed a lot of the tables around us ordering beef short rib, and my friend who came along said they'd had plenty of group dinners at Daraewon and that the short rib and kkomjangeo (hagfish) were seriously good!!!

There were already quite a few customers when we visited at 6pm on a weekday, and by 7pm every table was full — that's how popular this Seo-gu, Daegu restaurant is! Here's my review after eating pork belly, makchang, and beef short rib at this Seo-gu, Daegu favorite ◡̈

Daraewon Makchang, a well-known makchang spot in Daegu, sits in Naedang-dong in Seo-gu, right at the Nampyeongni Intersection, just behind the traffic light!

There's a café called Bombom and a Paik's Coffee across the crosswalk, so you can grab a coffee and then a drink afterward — the tent-restaurant feel is perfect for this kind of autumn weather!

Seating for group dinners and the open-air outdoor tables

On the other side there's a space that's separated off almost like a private room, which would be perfect if you're looking for a group dinner spot in Seo-gu, Daegu ◡̈ Kind of like renting out the whole hall 🎶

There are lots of round tables set up so there's plenty of room, and if you're a baseball fan, the seats around here are prime real estate ㅎ ↙️

I wanted that outdoor feeling so I picked a table on the outside — the lighting was soft so it wasn't harsh on the eyes, no mosquitoes, and the cool breeze put me in a good mood.

Restrooms: separate for men and women

The restrooms at this Seo-gu, Daegu restaurant are separated by gender, which was a nice touch, and they were clean — perfect for a night of drinking ◡̈

Since everyone kept saying it's a great Seo-gu, Daegu restaurant, I got even more curious and ordered pork belly, beef short rib, AND pork makchang!! The pork makchang comes pre-grilled, so they put it straight on the grill for us — no solo shot of it, sorry. Grilled it right alongside the pork belly~~

How the pre-grilled pork makchang and beef short rib tasted

The makchang was chewy, and since it comes pre-grilled it was so much more convenient and tasted even better 🤤 You know that feeling of a huge spread of meat and drinking soju with it? ♥

I meant to mention that they also give you kimchi to grill, so now we had the full trio of soju, kimchi, and pork belly haha. For our last round of meat we ordered beef short rib,

and everyone in our group was like, why is the beef short rib the highlight at a makchang restaurant? It really was a generous portion and delicious, great value for the price. Only ₩23,000 for this. If they'd had fresh wasabi I probably would've eaten two plates by myself.

Honest verdict on Daraewon Makchang in Seo-gu, Daegu

Daraewon had a nice atmosphere thanks to the open-air seating, perfect for this kind of weather! It's an affordable Korean BBQ spot, so it was easy to enjoy a casual dinner with drinks without worrying about the bill.

I went in thinking of it as a makchang place, but the short rib and pork belly were so good that before I knew it, we'd gone through 6 bottles of soju…😂 I get why this famous makchang restaurant in Pyeongni-dong, Seo-gu, Daegu was packed even on a weekday.
