Pork belly BBQ near Duryu Station, Daegu: Daraewon Makchang
In short
Daraewon Makchang Daegu Main Branch is a long-running outdoor tent (yajang) barbecue restaurant at 298 Pyeongni-ro in Seo-gu, Daegu, about 555m from Duryu Station Exit 19. Two of us grilled 3 servings of pork belly at an outdoor table, drank 4 bottles of soju poured icy enough to slush, and finished with ramyeon (instant noodles) in an aluminum pot — the pork belly was so good we forgot to order the signature makchang (grilled beef intestine). The tent atmosphere and the meat were both worth it, so the makchang is saved for the next visit.

I've brought you a perfect old-school outdoor tent restaurant for this kind of weather, haha. The moment we walked in, the atmosphere was already amazing!! It's apparently already a well-known spot, because it was nearly full even when we visited T_T
Feeling that old-school vibe in this cool weather with grilled meat and a glass of soju — the mood was seriously the best 🍻 It wasn't just great vibes though, the food was just as good. Let me introduce Daraewon Makchang, a great restaurant in Seo-gu, Daegu!!

Outdoor tent or indoor hall: where to sit at Daraewon Makchang

You can enjoy Daraewon Makchang in two styles, haha. There's a separate area with full outdoor-tent vibes, and further inside there's an indoor hall too, so you can pick whichever suits your mood!!
In this kind of cool weather, I personally recommend the outdoor tent seats 🍻 With that old-school atmosphere added on top, the soju just goes down on its own, lol.
What's on the menu at Daraewon Makchang

I actually made a pretty big mistake here... I'll reveal why later, lol.
The menu was really varied, but every single item was perfect for drinking with, so there was no way we could skip the soju T_T Seeing makchang (grilled beef intestine), chicken feet, cartilage, and pork skin all on one menu made this drinker's eyes light up 🤣

A review event you can't miss!! And right below it, a photo of the yangpuni bibimbap (mixed rice in a large bowl) looked so good... I ordered one the instant I saw the picture, lol.
Side dishes plus rice cake and onion on the grill

Here are the basic side dishes, haha. Only what you'd actually eat came out, neatly, so it didn't take up much table space, which I liked!!
We grilled the rice cake, onion, and green onion right along with the meat on the pan, and it was such a treat, haha. The rice cake grilled golden-brown was chewy, and the onion and green onion turned sweet, so I kept reaching for them!!
Why 3 servings of pork belly was not enough

The big mistake I mentioned earlier is exactly this... sigh. Without thinking, we ordered 3 servings of just pork belly T_T If you're at Daraewon Makchang, you should've ordered a mix of beef makchang and pork belly!!!!!!! I only realized this after the meat came out... In the end, we had to save makchang for our next visit T_T

Here's why this was such a big mistake... The second we took a bite of the pork belly, we just knew. Ahh... they're really using good quality meat here, lol.
So if a place with 'makchang' literally in its name has pork belly this good, what does that tell you?? The makchang has to be amazing too!!!!!! 🥹 That's when we glanced around at the other tables — almost everyone was eating makchang, lol T_T Seeing that made us regret even more that we didn't mix in some makchang with our order... Next time, I'm definitely coming back for makchang!!

Crazy visuals, right? The taste is just as crazy.
Slushy-cold soju and ramyeon in an aluminum pot

And the soju here is really, really cold 🩷 It comes out so cold that if you shake it a little, you can turn it into a soju slush!! Grilling meat in that old-school outdoor tent atmosphere while drinking ice-slush soju — it really just kept going down smoothly, haha.

It really just kept going down... Daraewon Makchang is a bit far from our place, so we have to take public transportation. So we really meant to stop drinking at that point... but then I looked at the table next to us, and weren't they eating ramyeon?? The visual was just too much to resist, so in the end it was one ramyeon plus one more bottle of soju T_T lol.
So the two of us ended up drinking 4 bottles of soju and took the subway home... We drank more than my usual limit, but the atmosphere was that good and the soju just kept flowing 😂

Here's the culprit ramyeon... It comes bubbling in a small aluminum pot, and how could anyone resist that visual!!! Lol. We'd clearly said we were done eating, but the moment we saw the ramyeon, our minds changed instantly T_T And so it ended in overdrinking...😂
Is Daraewon Makchang in Daegu worth a visit?

Daraewon Makchang, a great restaurant in Seo-gu, Daegu, where we really got to enjoy that outdoor-tent vibe in this cool weather!! We loved the old-school atmosphere from the start, and the pork belly was so good that we understood exactly why it's busy even late at night, haha.
Especially the combo of soju cold enough to turn to slush and ramyeon boiled in a tiny aluminum pot — I just couldn't resist that T_T The one thing I regret is that the restaurant is literally named Daraewon Makchang, and we didn't eat any makchang... lol. Almost every table around us was eating makchang, so why did I only order pork belly? 🥹
In the end, we were satisfied enough with both the atmosphere and the food to drink 4 bottles of soju between the two of us before heading home! Next time, I'm definitely coming back to eat beef makchang 🩷
