Makchang restaurant at Nampyeongni Intersection, Daegu: Daraewon

In short

Daraewon Makchang Daegu Main Branch is a makchang (grilled pork intestine) restaurant that has stood on the same corner at Nampyeongni Intersection in Seo-gu, Daegu, for nearly 50 years. On a cool evening the writer sat at an outdoor table with friends and grilled three servings of raw pork makchang, crisp outside and chewy inside and hard to stop eating once wrapped with perilla leaf sauce. With its street-stall style outdoor seating, Daraewon Makchang is a fine Seo-gu spot for makchang and a drink.

Today's review is from Daraewon Makchang, an outdoor-dining favorite in Seo-gu, Daegu. Evenings have gotten pleasantly cool lately, which is the perfect time for good food and a drink outside, so I went with friends to eat makchang together after a while.

This time I visited Daraewon Makchang, located right on the corner of Nampyeongni Intersection. I was curious because it's supposedly been in the same spot for almost 50 years, and once I visited I totally understood why it's been loved for so long! It also has that pojangmacha (street-cart-style tent bar) vibe outside that's perfect for weather like this, so it was a great old-school Daegu restaurant to hang out at with friends.

Where is Daraewon Makchang, and where do you park?

Daraewon Makchang sits at 298 Pyeongni-ro, Seo-gu, Daegu, right on the corner of Nampyeongni Intersection, so it's not hard to find. Since it's on a corner of a main road, the storefront catches your eye even as you pass by, and it's pretty accessible overall.

For parking, you can use the gravel lot in front of the restaurant — it's a good idea to check for available space before you go, since it only fits about 3-4 cars. My friends and I went together and had no trouble finding the place. Above all, since it's been established near Nampyeongni Intersection for so long, it had that familiar, well-loved neighborhood feel typical of a good Seo-gu restaurant.

The moment I stepped inside, what hit me first was that warm, nostalgic feeling only an old-school restaurant can have. Rather than the clean, polished look of newly opened places these days, it has that cozy, familiar atmosphere you only get from somewhere that's been running in the same spot for decades.

Another charm of Daraewon Makchang is its outdoor seating. When the evening weather cools down like this, sitting at an outdoor table grilling makchang really does feel like being at a real pojangmacha. Sitting with friends, grilling makchang, having a drink and chatting — I completely lost track of time. Personally I love this kind of outdoor tent-bar vibe, so I thought this season is an even better time to visit.

Daraewon Makchang menu and the review event

I looked over the menu and picked a few things — since I came with friends this time, we ordered raw pork makchang as the main dish. There was also a review event running at the time of our visit: you could choose either patbingsu (red bean shaved ice) or bomb steamed egg. If you want to join, it's worth checking before you order.

I've been noticing lately that when a restaurant has a review event going on, I end up paying more attention to it — little perks like this are nice to have. But at a makchang place, the most important thing isn't a complicated menu, it's eating the makchang properly and enjoying it ☆ So that day my friends and I decided to focus on the makchang itself! If you want, they'll pre-grill it for you too, so even people who aren't great at grilling can enjoy it deliciously.

After a short wait, the side dishes that go well with makchang started arriving one by one. Makchang is delicious just grilled plain, but pairing it with sauces and side dishes brings out a whole different flavor — perilla leaf sauce, leafy greens for wrapping, raw onion, and more. As we nibbled on the sides waiting for the makchang to cook, the smell of it sizzling on the grill kept making me hungrier.

Makchang especially needs to be grilled to a good golden-brown to really bring out its savory flavor, so my friends and I kept carefully flipping it so it wouldn't burn!

Finally, the star of the day — raw pork makchang! Note that at Daraewon Makchang, raw pork makchang can only be ordered starting from 3 servings, which is worth knowing before you visit. I initially worried it might be too much, but once we put it on the grill it turned out to be just the right amount to share with friends.

At first the makchang looks plump and moist, but as it cooks on the grill you can literally watch the surface turn golden-brown and crispy. We cut it into bite-sized pieces with scissors as we grilled, and once properly cooked, the makchang had a golden, chewy outside that got more savory the more you chewed — really delicious. I especially loved that signature chewy, bouncy texture unique to raw pork makchang. Rather than grilling it until it got tough and hard, cooking it to just the right golden-brown gave a much better texture — chewy inside, lightly crisp outside.

The first bite brings a savory aroma, and the more you chew the more that deep, distinctive makchang flavor comes through — makchang lovers would really enjoy Daraewon Makchang's style. Wrapping it with perilla leaf sauce adds a slightly different note to the savoriness, and I kept reaching for more. Above all, sitting at an outdoor table with friends grilling the makchang ourselves added to the mood, making the food taste even better. There really is something fun about makchang being grilled together, sitting in a group around the grill.

Is Daraewon Makchang worth a night out with friends?

Daraewon Makchang, having held the same spot for nearly 50 years, left an impression with the warm charm only an old-school restaurant can have. It was especially nice that, now that evenings have cooled down, the outdoor seats are great for makchang and a drink.

Clean, stylish restaurants are great too, but I'm someone who also loves the cozy atmosphere you can only find at an old-school Daegu restaurant like this, so it was a particularly fun time eating with friends. If you're craving makchang near Nampyeongni Intersection, or looking for a Daegu makchang restaurant where you can enjoy the outdoor tent-bar mood in this cool weather — or just a warm, welcoming Seo-gu restaurant — Daraewon Makchang is worth a visit.
