Deulanguil restaurant in Daegu with a kids' mackerel menu: Geumdeungeo

Taking two kids plus grandparents out to eat means juggling a lot — parking, the food, what the kids will actually eat. This time we went to Geumdeungeo, a mackerel restaurant near Suseong Lake on Deulanguil in Daegu, and the short version is: the adults were happy and the kids ate really well, so it turned out to be a solid Daegu family dining spot. The grilled mackerel especially was fantastic — honestly the best mackerel I've had haha. This is a record of our visit to Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch, a place good for both kids and grandparents on Deulanguil.

Parking here was pretty well set up. There are actually three tower parking buildings, so we didn't stress about parking at all. With two kids and grandparents in tow, easy parking mattered way more than I expected.

The restaurant is on the 2nd floor, but there's an elevator, so it was easy to bring a stroller up and no hassle at all visiting with grandparents.

How big is the restaurant, and is it easy with toddlers?

Once inside, the place was bigger than I expected. Lots of tables and big windows gave it an open feel, and there were also seats partitioned by low walls for those wanting a quieter meal. Eating with kids always makes you a bit self-conscious about other diners, so having plenty of space put my mind at ease haha.

One of my favorite things about Geumdeungeo was honestly the banchan (side dishes). You help yourself at a self-serve corner, and everything — doraji muchim, jeotgal, stir-fried anchovies, japchae — was genuinely delicious. I expected them to just be simple sides to go with the mackerel, but each one was so good I kept going back for more. There were also kids' tableware, tongs, and scissors at the self-serve corner, which made eating with the children much easier.

What we ordered: wood-fired mackerel and fire-charred spicy pork

The menu at Geumdeungeo isn't complicated — mostly grilled mackerel and spicy pork stir-fry — so ordering was easy. They also sell takeaway food. There's a separate kids' mackerel menu for ages 4 and up, plus you can add extra mackerel, which made it a good Deulanguil spot for families. We ordered the fire-charred spicy pork stir-fry for two (₩40,000) and the wood-fired grilled mackerel for two (₩38,000).

The banchan was laid out neatly. Looking neat is one thing, but the taste really delivered too — good enough that you could make a whole meal out of just the side dishes. There's a reason it's known as a family-gathering favorite in Suseong-gu.

Fire-charred spicy pork stir-fry, 40,000 won for two

A properly smoky, spicy pork stir-fry with chunkier-than-expected pieces of meat. It didn't taste like cheap back-leg meat — the meat itself was thick, with good chew, and went perfectly with rice. If you like spicy food, this pairs well ordered alongside the grilled mackerel.

Wood-fired grilled mackerel, 38,000 won for two

And today's real star: the wood-fired grilled mackerel for two at ₩38,000. It was genuinely fantastic. Crispy on the outside while the flesh inside stayed moist — a clear step up from mackerel pan-fried at home. Air-fryer mackerel at home always falls short, and pan-frying fills the whole house with smell, so being able to eat mackerel comfortably like this made Geumdeungeo a real find for grilled mackerel in Daegu.

The mackerel comes with nuruk salt (fermented rice-malt salt) for dipping, which wasn't as salty as I expected. And if you look closely, the bones are nearly all removed already, making it easy to eat. Deboning fish for kids is honestly always a chore haha, so that detail made it great for eating with children and grandparents. The moistness of the flesh comes through even in photos, and now I get why it's called a top mackerel spot in Daegu.

What the 30-month-old, 15-month-old and grandparents thought

My kids are 30 months and 15 months old, and they really ate a lot that day lol. They ate the mackerel well and kept picking at the japchae and stir-fried anchovies too. Eating out with young children often means there's not much they can actually eat, but here the variety of banchan and the not-too-strong seasoning made feeding the kids easy. Taking out two kids plus grandparents, I honestly worried whether the food would suit everyone's taste, but the kids ate well and the grandparents said it was delicious, so I could relax and enjoy the meal too haha.

Besides what's served in the restaurant, Geumdeungeo also sells jeotgal, mackerel, seokbakji, stir-fried anchovies, and other banchan for takeaway. After tasting them, I understood why — honestly better than most dedicated side-dish shops, and there were a few I wanted to take home.

There's a dessert corner too after the meal. Mix coffee and a coffee machine using Starbucks beans mean you can have coffee to your taste. There's also apricot juice and take-out ice cups, so you can walk out with iced coffee in hand. Wrapping up a meal with dessert on top made this an even more satisfying family outing.

Verdict: is Geumdeungeo worth it with kids and grandparents?

This visit to Geumdeungeo, a Suseong Lake favorite on Deulanguil in Daegu, with two kids and grandparents in tow: easy parking and an elevator made it manageable to bring both kids and grandparents along, and the spacious, clean interior worked well for a family meal. But above all, the grilled mackerel was truly delicious. Crispy outside, moist inside — personally the best wood-fired mackerel I've had haha.

The kids ate the mackerel, japchae, and stir-fried anchovies really well, and the grandparents said the food was tasty, so this outing felt like a real success. If you're looking for a kid-friendly place to eat out, or a Deulanguil restaurant to take your parents to, Geumdeungeo — a grilled mackerel favorite in Daegu — is worth a visit. Especially if, like me, you need to take out both kids and grandparents at once, easy parking, clean food, and kids who actually eat well made this a place I'd want to return to haha.
