Daegu Korean restaurant for family meals: Donggok Jemyeon

While out in downtown Daegu, the whole family was so happy with our meal at Donggok Jemyeon Daegu Dongseong-ro Main Branch, a Korean restaurant in Dongseong-ro! If you are looking near Gyodong in Dongseong-ro for a satisfying combination of deep, rich kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and tender boiled pork, definitely keep this great Daegu meal spot in mind for a hearty meal 😚

Donggok Jemyeon's location and parking

Located in Gyodong, Dongseong-ro, Donggok Jemyeon was named after the owner's hometown, Donggok in Cheongdo; the owner wanted to serve food made with quality ingredients. Parking can be a concern in the middle of downtown, but the restaurant supports 30 minutes of parking at Dongseong-ro Parking Lot, just a three-minute walk away, so it is easy to visit 👍

Warm wood interiors that are great with children

The warm, lovely wood interior makes this a perfect spot for a date or a family meal! It is also very well equipped with baby chairs, making it a really good place to bring young children. Our 28-month-old sat nicely in a baby chair and enjoyed the meal with us too 👶

The kalguksu and boiled pork we ordered

• Hanwoo beef-bone kalguksu: regular noodles in a deep, savory beef-bone broth simmered in-house
• Yukgaejang kalguksu: a spicy, rich specialty with plenty of meat and scallions
• Half portion of gabrisal boiled pork: mild, tender pork with the fatty parts neatly trimmed
• Rice: unlimited and complimentary

When you order, they bring out spicy, delicious geotjeori kimchi (fresh kimchi). It has plenty of punch and umami, and it is an absolutely perfect match for the kalguksu! It was a little spicy even for someone with a low spice tolerance, but it was so good that we immediately asked for a refill 🌶️

How was the Hanwoo beef-bone kalguksu broth?

Because the Hanwoo beef-bone broth is simmered in-house, it was simply deep and rich! Even people who do not usually love beef-bone broth would take a sip and go, “Oh? This is so delicious!” The chew of the house-made regular noodles went wonderfully with the rich broth and sauce, and it was perfect for sharing with a child too 😋

The spicy kick of yukgaejang kalguksu

The yukgaejang kalguksu, with its spicy, rich broth, is also a perfect menu choice for a hangover! It comes generously loaded with meat and green onion, giving it a deep umami flavor, and the broth soaked right into the house-made noodles. We finished the whole bowl in no time 👍

Half a plate of gabrisal boiled pork and free rice

We also ordered a half portion of gabrisal boiled pork, just right for two people to share alongside the kalguksu! The fatty parts had been trimmed neatly, so we could enjoy it lightly without it becoming greasy until the end. Top the tender pork with spicy geotjeori kimchi or musaengchae (seasoned shredded radish), and it is truly a perfect combination 👏

The bowls of rice are complimentary, so we mixed rice into the kalguksu broth, topped it with the boiled pork, and ended up absolutely stuffed!

Finishing the meal with yogurt

As we were leaving after our meal, they even gave us sweet yogurt on the house, which made for such a pleasant finish! This is truly a great kalguksu spot with deeply flavorful broth, and the combination of house-made noodles and gabrisal boiled pork was perfect. With Dongseong-ro parking support, baby chairs, and complimentary rice, it is ideal for a family meal! Whenever we are craving a Korean restaurant in Dongseong-ro or a good meal around Gyodong in Daegu, we will definitely be back 👍
