Korean BBQ near Dongdaegu Station with tableside grilling: Hubaldae

In short

Hubaldae Dongdaegu Station Branch is a samgyeopsal (pork belly) and daechang (beef intestine) BBQ restaurant a 5-minute walk from Shinsegae Dongdaegu, in Dong-gu, Daegu. Visiting on a weekday around 7pm, the writer had Korean beef daechang grilled with honey potatoes and kimchi jjaglagi (kimchi stew) wraps while staff grilled everything and kept the side dishes stocked without being asked. A solid pick after a baseball road trip or for a family meal with kids in tow.

The BBQ spot famous among baseball fans

Hubaldae is already well known among baseball fans! Even before it came to Daegu, whenever I traveled to watch away games, I'd end up stopping by whichever local branch of Hubaldae was around. And now Hubaldae has landed in Daegu too! The first location was in Jongno, but did you know there's now one at Dongdaegu Station as well?!

Weekday, 7pm — any wait?

I went after work on a weekday around 7pm, and there were already quite a few customers. I got seated right away without a wait, but I'd still recommend making a reservation just in case! Popular restaurants are always busy, after all 😘

Nice touches, down to the cloth covering the bag basket

Every time I come to Hubaldae, I notice these small thoughtful touches. There's a basket for your bag, and even a cloth to cover it so it doesn't pick up the smell of grilling!

Hubaldae started in Seomyeon, Busan, and has been spreading across the country. When I first went to the Busan location, there was just one in Seoul and one in Daejeon — now there are already two in Daegu! It really feels like a restaurant that's winning people over everywhere.

The basic table setting and wrap combinations

The basic table setting includes shredded scallions, mountain garlic leaf wraps, mushrooms, sundae (Korean blood sausage), two types of sauce, basil and angelica leaves, kimchi jjaglagi (kimchi stew), and mul kimchi (water kimchi). One of Hubaldae's distinctive features is its 'variety of wrap combinations' — you can enjoy the meat with honey potato, angelica, basil, kimchi jjaglagi, and more, a combination you won't find anywhere else in the country.

Basil laid on the grill first

They grill the basil first, and the basil aroma wafting up is a pass from this basil fanatic.

My pick is the kimchi jjaglagi and honey potato combo, haha. I think that's the combination I order most every time I come.

They first lay down thick-cut potato, mushrooms, sundae, garlic, and chili peppers,

then add the meat on top.

This grilled daechang is brushed with a house-made special sauce, and doesn't it look super fresh?!

The staff really don't stop moving as they grill the meat for you. It was so nice being able to just chat and eat without worrying about the meat at all ><

First wrap prepared with honey potato, mountain garlic leaf and basil

They wrap the first bite for you like this: honey potato, mountain garlic leaf, basil, kimchi jjaglagi, and meat dipped generously in sauce! One big bite and your appetite fully kicks in, ready to really get into the meat ^^

Service where you don't have to lift a finger — great for family gatherings too

Once the meat is fully cooked, they set it on the metal plate like this, and if there's no room, they use the potatoes as a makeshift bowl haha. Staff keep checking and refilling all the side dishes, including the potatoes, without being asked. You really don't have to lift a finger here. I'd definitely recommend coming with family too!! If you have young kids, parents can probably just focus entirely on them.

Finishing with fried rice and chewy ramyeon

You know Koreans eat fried rice as dessert, right? ** Order the meal menu 20 minutes before you're done so you can finish it while there's still meat left to enjoy alongside it.

If you write a review as part of their event, you get a free special fried rice (₩6,900) or special ramyeon (₩6,900)! The ramyeon noodles are very chewy, so it's the best option for anyone who loves a firm bite ❤

Final thoughts

From the meat to the side dishes, everything was really satisfying. Not only do they grill the meat for you, but small thoughtful touches stand out too — the bag basket, spraying deodorizer as you leave after paying. Plus the variety of wrap combinations you can only get at Hubaldae! If you're looking for a great BBQ spot near Dongdaegu Station, or want a must-visit stop for baseball fans before heading home from an away game, this is a restaurant I'd recommend!
