Daegu Korean restaurant with grilled baby octopus for two: Cafe Dongi
In short
Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch is a home-style Korean set-meal restaurant near Daebonggyo Station in Suseong, Daegu. The writer visited with her mom and ordered the mini sweet and sour pork and the grilled baby octopus (jjukkumi) with stir-fried pork set for two, and the octopus kept sizzling on the brazier so her mom cleared her bowl of white rice faster than usual. With a self-service bar offering unlimited fried eggs, five-grain rice, barley candy and tea, Cafe Dongi is an easy pick for a comfortable meal with parents.

Today I had a hearty meal with my mom! When I eat with my mom, I tend to look for places that serve a proper set meal with rice, soup, and side dishes rather than anything too spicy or heavy — and Cafe Dongi fit the bill perfectly, so I brought her along to this spot I keep coming back to :-)

Outside Cafe Dongi: a home-style Korean set-meal restaurant

There's signage announcing it's a home-style rice restaurant specialist!

If you're like me and looking for a hearty meal with your parents, the phrase "home-style rice restaurant" is probably the first thing that catches your eye!

The menu is also introduced at the entrance! The summer specials are under ₩10,000 per person, which is a really good price...!!!
Inside Cafe Dongi: mood, baby chairs and the waiting list
Now let's head inside!

Once inside, it was cleaner and cozier than I expected!

The wood-toned tables and chairs give a warm feel, and the sunlight coming through the windows made it feel like a relaxed, unhurried place to have a meal :-)

Baby chairs are also available!✅ Moms out with their babies can also enjoy a hearty, nutritious meal :-)

There's a waiting board at the entrance, so be prepared for a wait during the lunch peak ...ㅠㅠ
What's on the free service bar: fried eggs, five-grain rice, barley candy, tea

And on one side, there's a self-service bar set up!

I fried up two eggs myself hahahaha><
Cafe Dongi menu and prices

From summer season dishes to kids' set meals! The menu is quite varied, and the fact that it comes priced per person means you don't have to all order the same thing — that's a big plus!!
What we ordered: mini sweet and sour pork and grilled baby octopus for two
- Mini sweet and sour pork
- Grilled octopus stir-fry set for two
Mini sweet and sour pork with a lemony sauce

The mini sweet and sour pork came out first! Chewy glutinous rice batter on the outside, thick and well-cooked pork inside!

The sauce here is really good! It has lemon in it, so it's tangy and sweet without being too much,,,hahaha I think this beats the sauce at Chinese restaurants!
Grilled baby octopus for two: smoky flavour straight off the brazier

My mom and I have similar tastes, so we picked the same dish! hahahaha

The side dishes were also generous and well put together. Octopus over a blazing brazier,,, the heat just kept radiating off the octopus

There's also rice cake, and biting into it, the seasoning had soaked in deeply, so it went really well with rice,,!

The vegetables were also cut into generous chunks, and eating the warm, richly-seasoned octopus with freshly served white rice was a dream combo,,! There's no way mom wasn't going to love it!!!

My mom usually eats slowly, but today, with the smoky hot octopus and even doenjang soup, the rice just went down on its own, she said hahahahahaha

Following mom's lead, I also finished my bowl completely and drank down my omija tea hahaha

Is Cafe Dongi a good meal out with parents?
At the end, mom said "Now that's a proper meal~" and even walked out with a cup of barley candy hahaha
Now that's a proper meal~
On days when you want a hearty, comfortable meal rather than something flashy, isn't Cafe Dongi exactly the place to look for? It's a place I keep going back to, and it seems like it'll become a place I go back to over and over and over again! If you're in Suseong-gu looking for a comfortable meal with your parents, it's worth checking out. Highly, highly, highly recommend it⭐️⭐️
