Asian restaurant in Daegu for kids and elders: Rama & Bavana Suseong

In short

Rama & Bavana Suseong Lake Branch is a second-floor curry and Southeast Asian restaurant on Yonghak-ro in Suseong-gu, Daegu, looking out over Suseong Lake. Visiting on an early weekday evening with a child and an elderly family member, the writer ordered nasi goreng, poo pad pong curry (Thai crab curry), butter garlic shrimp, chicken curry and butter garlic naan; portions felt about 1.5 times larger than expected and the crab shells were soft enough for an elder with weak teeth. Rama & Bavana provides a sturdy wooden baby chair and dedicated parking, but there is no elevator to the second floor.

Whenever I visit Suseong Lake in Daegu, I always end up eating somewhere with a lake view. There's something great about eating while looking out over the open water, and it's also nice to take a light stroll around the lake afterward — I really love this neighborhood.

So I finally visited Rama & Bavana Suseong Lake Branch, long known for its fusion curry. This time I went with my kid, plus an elder who doesn't usually eat foreign food or anything with spices, so I did a pretty thorough review search before heading over.

Why booking Rama & Bavana helps even on an early weekday evening

Rama & Bavana Suseong Lake Branch was fairly full even on an early weekday evening. I figured a weekday and an early time would mean we could eat leisurely, but there were more guests than I expected once we got inside.

Not only were the good window seats taken, but reserved-table signs were everywhere. We hadn't booked ahead, so we couldn't sit right away and had to wait a bit. Fortunately, there was a separate waiting area inside the restaurant, so we could wait comfortably seated — it wasn't as uncomfortable as I expected. If you want to eat right at your preferred time without waiting, I'd recommend booking through Naver Reservations.

Parking at Rama & Bavana, and the missing elevator

We drove, and parking wasn't difficult since there's dedicated parking behind the building. One disappointing thing, though: there's no elevator. Rama & Bavana Suseong Lake Branch is on the second floor, so anyone bringing a baby or using a wheelchair should keep this in mind.

Dining room mood and the Suseong Lake view

Walking in, the register and kitchen sit in the middle with tables split on either side. The kitchen isn't fully closed off — it's somewhat open, so you can see the food being prepared, and that structure actually felt clean to me rather than chaotic. The overall wood-tone interior made the mood warm and comfortable.

Across the street, Suseong Lake comes into full view, so it felt healing the entire time we ate.

I liked that they had a sturdy, heavy wooden baby chair here instead of a light, wobbly plastic one.

Every table also has a table-side tablet for ordering, which made things really convenient. No need to keep calling a staff member — you can just look at the menu and order right from your seat, which was especially handy with a kid in tow.

What we ordered and how big the portions were (about 1.5x)

Since everyone was hungry that day, we skipped things like salad and focused on mains. We ordered nasi goreng, tom yum crab curry, butter garlic shrimp, chicken curry, butter garlic naan and a bowl of rice.

As the dishes came out one by one, the portions were much bigger than I expected. Each dish was far more generous than what I'd get at a typical restaurant — it felt like almost 1.5 times the usual amount. We hadn't known this ahead of time and added extra rice, so if you're visiting for the first time and unsure about portions, I'd suggest ordering just the mains and adding more if you're still hungry. Notably, aside from the curries, the nasi goreng, tom yum crab curry and butter garlic shrimp all come with rice included by default. Still, since portions are generous, you can eat worry-free knowing leftovers can be packed to go.

Main dishes set out on the table

Nasi goreng at Rama & Bavana

The round, ball-shaped nasi goreng everyone says you must order here — when you slice through the bread crust on top with a knife, it's packed inside with octopus, seafood and cheese, no gaps.

There was so much seafood that octopus came up with nearly every spoonful — I loved that.

Poo pad pong curry: crab shells soft enough for elders

With the tom yum crab curry, what stood out most was how soft the crab was. Dishes like this can normally be a bit inconvenient to eat because of the crab shell, but this crab — maybe it had molted recently — had a notably soft shell that was easy to eat. The elder who joined us has weak teeth and usually struggles with crab dishes, but the crab was so tender that she ate it better than I expected, which made me really happy.

Butter garlic shrimp

Of everything I ate that day, the butter garlic shrimp stuck with me the most. It comes with not just shrimp but also rice and salad. The rice is drizzled with a savory house sauce, topped with plump, buttery shrimp and fresh salad — eating the shrimp, salad and rice together kept it from feeling greasy while letting me taste several flavors at once.

How spicy is the chicken curry at spice level 3?

I don't handle spicy food well, so I was a bit worried when ordering the chicken curry. It's labeled spice level 3, so I braced myself, but once I tried it, it wasn't as intense as I expected. At first you get a subtle sweetness from the onions, followed by a clean, sharp heat. There's definitely some spice, but it's not the kind that lingers and burns — I managed it more comfortably than I thought. If you don't handle spicy food well, this one is worth trying.

Butter garlic naan with the curries

I ordered the butter garlic naan to eat with the curry, and personally the pairing was great. The garlic flavor wasn't overpowering — it had a slightly sweet edge that softened the curry's heat. Since I don't do well with spice, I felt a bit of a kick eating the chicken curry, but pairing it with naan made it much easier. I kept going back and forth between curry and naan the whole meal haha.

Usually when I go to a restaurant I order a soda like cola, but this time I didn't order any drink. The food overall wasn't too greasy or intense, and the flavor balance was good enough that I didn't feel the usual craving for something fizzy.

Service at Rama & Bavana and the review event

The food was great, but what stuck with me was how kind the staff were. At one point I dropped my fork while eating, and before I even said anything, a staff member noticed and brought me a new one. It's a tiny thing, but them noticing on their own made me genuinely happy. It was especially impressive that they were keeping such a close eye on things even during a busy stretch.

I also noticed a certificate displayed at the counter. It caught my eye naturally as we walked in — it noted the restaurant had been selected as one of Daegu's Friendly Travel Shops, which gave me a bit more confidence in the food and service.

For reference, they're also running a Naver receipt review event. Write a photo review and you get either French fries or a daily salad for free — worth knowing if you're planning to visit.

A walk around Suseong Lake after dinner

When I come to Suseong Lake, I tend not to leave right after eating — I like to walk around the lake a bit. This time too, after a satisfying meal, we took a light stroll around Suseong Lake, and with decent weather on top of it, the whole meal-to-walk experience ended on a great note.

If you're looking for a day to eat leisurely and take a walk at Suseong Lake, and you're craving something a bit different from usual, Rama & Bavana Suseong Lake Branch is worth stopping by.
