Third-floor attic seats and signature set at Dana Dongseong-ro, Daegu

I went shopping in Dongseong-ro today and suddenly craved Western food, so I dropped by Dana Dongseong-ro Main Branch, a Western-style restaurant that's been loved in Dongseong-ro, Daegu for a long time.

3 minutes from Banwoldang Station, second floor of the night market alley

Dana Dongseong-ro Main Branch is located in the night market alley near Tongsin-golmok, about 3 minutes from Exit 10 of Banwoldang Station.

Second floor or third floor — where to sit

Dana Dongseong-ro uses the second and third floors of the building. The second floor has the kitchen and three dining tables, and the big windows let in a lot of light, giving it a brighter atmosphere than the third floor — that's one advantage.

Climb the stairs and you feel like you've entered Dana's own antique-style attic. The slightly dim lighting and wood tones felt calmer and more grounded. There are tables on both sides of the staircase, and more dining tables than the second floor — it looked like more guests preferred the third floor over the second. For reference, we ate on the third floor too.

There's a corner in the store with sentimental little props that make you feel like you've stepped into Europe, so it was great for photos too.

What we ordered — signature set and half-and-half pizza

Dana has all kinds of Western food, from pasta to rice dishes, pizza, steak and side dishes. We ordered the signature set made up of Dana's signature dishes, and a pizza — since pizza can be ordered half-and-half, we chose margherita and bulgogi.

Dana also has drinks, beer and wine that go well with the food, so pairing to your taste can make the meal even better.

One special thing about Dana — drinks are refillable, so keep that in mind.

Once we sat down, plates, forks, knives and cups were already set out, which really made it feel like a restaurant. Since we ordered pizza, they also brought pickles and sauces along with hot sauce.

Finally, our signature set and pizza arrived. Even though there was a table for four, we wanted a cozy meal so we sat at a two-person table in the corner — but with three menu items, the table felt a bit tight.

Baked risotto — cut it open and there's risotto inside

First we tried the baked risotto included in the signature set, which I'd been curious about. My first thought was 'is this really risotto?' but cutting it open revealed risotto inside — it was neat.

The outside of the baked risotto was browned nicely, tasting savory like a tortilla, without being hard enough to crumble. The risotto inside tasted better than expected — Western food can sometimes feel a bit heavy, but the spicy kick made it easy to eat, and though I'm not sure what sauce was used, the risotto had a delicious seafood umami that made me think 'no wonder it's a popular menu item.'

Cheongyang chili pepper bacon truffle cream pasta

Next we tried the cheongyang chili pepper bacon truffle cream pasta. As a cream pasta, it had a thick, dense texture. Cream pasta can get heavy the more you eat, but the cheongyang chili pepper gave it a spicy kick that made it easy to keep eating — and since it wasn't the sharp capsaicin kind of spicy but the cheongyang chili's own heat, the spiciness was actually enjoyable.

Piling the pasta on top of the bread that came with it tasted great too.

Bulgogi + margherita half-and-half pizza

Next is the half-and-half pizza we ordered — bulgogi on the left, margherita on the right.

The bulgogi pizza had a sweet, salty flavor from the bulgogi, similar to a familiar taste we're used to. The margherita pizza had savory, flavorful cheese with a tangy sauce that paired really well — I don't usually love cheese much, but the margherita was so good I kept reaching for more.

Overall everything suited our taste so well that we ate without pausing. Since we'd ordered three menu items, some pizza was left over, so we asked for it to be packed — and they packed it up so nicely.

That's the story of eating our fill of Western food at Dana Dongseong-ro in Daegu — from the risotto that was unique yet delicious, to the pasta with its spicy, thick cream that stood out, the sweet-salty bulgogi pizza, and the margherita with its cheesy flavor and tangy sauce. All the dishes suited even my family's palate, who don't usually eat Western food much, so we came home happily fed.
