Kid-friendly lunch with unlimited rice and fried eggs: Cafe Dongi

I went to Cafe Dongi, a Daegu Dongseong-ro restaurant that's great to visit with kids and generous with portions for the price — I wanted to share it right after coming home.

A cozy Daegu Dongseong-ro restaurant interior — how is it for sitting with kids?

When I first heard the name, I thought it was a pretty café! Turns out it's an affordable restaurant serving proper Korean home-style meals.

Inside, the white and wood-tone interior felt even cozier. The tables were spaced generously and baby chairs were well provided, making it a comfortable spot to visit with kids.

A varied menu at Cafe Dongi Main Branch, something for every taste

Sitting down, I browsed the menu comfortably on a tablet. From everyone's favorite grilled jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) and pork bulgogi to spicy stir-fried baby octopus, sweet and sour pork, and even kids' sets, there was quite a range. I personally liked that everything comes as a clean, individual one-person set.

Unlimited fried eggs and five-grain rice!

The real charm of this place is the generous self-serve corner.

It was neatly set up so you could make your own healthy five-grain rice and fried eggs. On top of that, crunchy barley gangjeong (rice puff snack) and heotgae tea (raisin tree tea) were also free.

Dongi grilled bulgogi set

The Dongi grilled bulgogi set had a gentle smoky char that wasn't overpowering, with a really deep savory flavor.

The seasoning soaked all the way into the meat — a true rice thief if there ever was one.

The basic side dishes were stir-fried anchovies and pickled radish strips and gungchae (a leafy pickle), which paired well with the main dish.

Pork shoulder Japanese curry set

The pork shoulder Japanese curry set let me enjoy the appeal of Japanese-style curry, with tender pork shoulder adding depth of flavor. The rich, deep curry sauce went really well with the rice.

A generous bowl of seaweed soup also came alongside it, which made the meal even more filling.

Clean-tasting yeolmu tuna bibimbap

The yeolmu (young radish greens) tuna bibimbap paired the crunchy texture of the yeolmu with the light, nutty tuna better than I expected. It wasn't overpowering and gave a clean lift to your appetite — perfect for a light but filling meal on a hot day or when you don't feel like eating much.

A great place to visit thanks to the kids' menu!

The kids' sets were mild enough for kids to eat without hesitation, and my kids polished off a whole bowl of rice along with the seaweed soup.
