Solo dining at a Noeun-dong pork cutlet restaurant in Daejeon
In short
Gatjidong Noeun Branch is a pork cutlet restaurant in the Noeun-dong restaurant district of Yuseong, Daejeon, where rice, soup and broth are unlimited at the self-serve bar. The writer arrived before the lunch rush and ordered the signature half-and-half pork cutlet set with the mini udon swapped for soba, plus whole pollack roe cream pasta, refilling the soup several times with a shake of pepper. With seats for solo diners too, Gatjidong Noeun Branch suits both a weekday lunch break and a family meal.

There's a restaurant in the busy Noeun-dong restaurant district of Daejeon that's gotten word-of-mouth buzz for good-value pork cutlets, so I stopped by for lunch.

Parking and solo seats at Gatjidong Noeun Branch
Gatjidong has a few parking spots right in front of the restaurant. Even though I went before the lunch rush, plenty of people were already eating. 🍴 There are quite a lot of tables inside, spaced generously enough that you can eat without feeling cramped. There's also seating set aside for solo diners.

Unlimited rice, soup and broth at the self-serve corner
After ordering on the tablet at the table, I checked out the self-serve corner — tableware is set out, and the lineup of complimentary offerings is generous, including rice, soup, and broth.

The basic side dishes are pickled radish and kimchi. Essential with pork cutlet!! You can help yourself as much as you like, but if you take small portions often instead of overloading your plate, there's plenty for everyone to share.

There's a whole pot of delicious rice. A lot of men come here, and this convenient self-serve rice corner plays a big part in that.

This is the kind of soup pork cutlet restaurants used to serve all the time, but it's harder to find these days. 👍 The big draw at this Noeun-dong pork cutlet favorite, Gatjidong, is that you can go back for this soup as many times as you like.

Let's go get some. A shake of pepper is a must for the soup — bring it back with pepper on top and get yourself warmed up before the pork cutlet arrives.

Why the cheese pork cutlet comes with a one-minute hourglass
After eating, I noticed an hourglass sitting on the table and looked into it. Apparently, when the cheese pork cutlet arrives, you flip the hourglass and cut into it after one minute for the best eating experience. What a nice touch!!!

What's in the signature half-and-half pork cutlet set
This is the signature menu, the half-and-half pork cutlet. It comes with one piece each of regular pork cutlet and cheese pork cutlet, a small side salad, and a scoop of rice.

Since I needed to eat the cheese cutlet, I flipped over the hourglass I'd seen earlier. While waiting out the minute, I cut into the other cutlet first.

The Western-style pork cutlet is made with sirloin aged for 160 hours, which made it tender, while the breading was crispy — the texture was great and I kept reaching for more.

After the minute was up, cutting into the cheese cutlet sent cheese oozing out right away, making it look even better. Best to eat it before the cheese sets.

Swapping the mini udon for soba
The soba that came with the half-and-half pork cutlet set — I'd ordered it as a swap from the mini udon — arrived with a slushy, icy broth that looked delicious.

The soba (buckwheat noodles) was excellent. The noodles were cooked just right, with a nice chewy bite, but the broth was the real star. Just the right sweetness, just the right seasoning, and cold and refreshing on top of it all — a perfect bowl of soba.

Whole pollack roe cream pasta at Gatjidong Noeun Branch
Next up, the cream pasta. It came topped with whole pollack roe. Bacon on the side was a nice touch too.

The noodles were cooked just right, and the cream cheese was a bit on the thin side, which would probably make this a great pick for kids too. There's a reason this place has built a reputation as a great-value favorite.

The vegetables were fresh, making the salad delicious too, and the thick-cut pork cutlet kept its crunch from the first bite to the last, making for an even more satisfying meal.

Who is Gatjidong Noeun Branch best for?
With a variety of dishes that everyone can enjoy at a good value, this is a Noeun-dong favorite that all kinds of crowds visit — from family outings to office workers on their lunch break.

It's also not far from the Daejeon National Cemetery, so it's convenient to stop by from there. Next time, I'll have to come back and try something different from the menu.
