Nonhyeon Station bar open to 5am: salt-grilled shrimp at Sanhocho

In short

Sanhocho Nonhyeon is a retro 1980s–90s style seafood bar on the bar street by Nonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul, open daily from 17:00 to 05:00. After a first round with friends, the writer came to Sanhocho Nonhyeon for a second round and ordered salt-grilled seasonal daeha (jumbo shrimp), which were still twitching when they went on the heat and came out so plump and nutty that everyone kept picking at them well past full. Even on a weekday Sanhocho Nonhyeon was almost fully booked, with just one table left.

It was a bar near Nonhyeon Station — after eating a ton with friends during round one, we were figuring out where to go for round two, and ended up at Sanhocho Nonhyeon, which has that retro feel and sits right on the hot bar street these days. I was honestly shocked at how packed it was — no seats left, so we got stuck right in the middle of the floor.

The moment I stepped inside — actually even from outside — the vintage interior caught my eye, a modern take on that warm 1980s-90s retro vibe. Maybe that's why the huge space was full of young people, with analog-style music playing that made it a great atmosphere for a drink. Even on a weekday there were tons of people, and I thought, yeah, this is why popular Gangnam bars are different.

What the Nonhyeon Station bar street feels like on a packed weeknight

The wide hall of Sanhocho Nonhyeon packed with customers

This is Sanhocho Nonhyeon, where I remember this huge, wide Nonhyeon bar being so full that only one seat was left, so we managed to get in without waiting.

Inside, Sanhocho is a hot Gangnam spot full of young people, and even on a weekday it's nearly full — once you go, you understand why it's so popular.

Salt-grilled seasonal jumbo shrimp, ordered for the second round

Since I'd already finished round one and come here for round two, salt-grilled daeha — in season right now — came to mind, so I ordered it right away. They also do hair-cutting service separately, but I was too full for that, and only thought of it after the fact.

Basic table setting and soy sauce brought right after being seated

As soon as we sat down, they set the table up like this — there's soy sauce at every seat, so you just pour it into your own sauce dish yourself.

Daeha shrimp grilling over the flame

Sanhocho near Nonhyeon Station is apparently known for seasonal seafood and aged sashimi brought up from Tongyeong every morning, but since I'd already eaten so much, I decided to keep it relatively simple and ordered the seasonal salt-grilled daeha shrimp — even just looking at it, you could tell it was fresh from how much it was still kicking.

Once it came to a full boil, the moment the lid came off the salt-grilled shrimp, a savory aroma filled the air, and I picked up a well-cooked one and started peeling it right away.

Plump daeha flesh picked up with chopsticks

Picking it up with chopsticks to eat, the flesh was completely packed and plump — even though I was full, I kept forgetting that and kept picking up more. Normally you're supposed to eat the head crispy-grilled too, but I was so full that day I focused just on the body.

Is Sanhocho Nonhyeon worth it for a late-night second round?

Going to Sanhocho and eating something delicious while clearing my head was definitely healing, and it made me want to come back to try the sashimi next time too. Focusing on the tasty grilled daeha without any distracting thoughts made it a really precious bit of time.

It was the perfect place for a light drink with fresh seafood in an atmosphere thick with 1980s-90s retro vibes. If you're in Gangnam or near Nonhyeon Station looking for a seafood bar with great atmosphere and a real human touch, definitely give Sanhocho Nonhyeon a visit!
