Jeongja-dong, Suwon café for freshly baked salt bread: Café Meomureum

After eating eel for lunch with a friend, I found myself craving coffee. We hadn't seen each other in a while, so just eating and parting ways felt like a waste — we wanted somewhere to sit a bit longer and talk, so we headed to Café Meomureum. At first I really just meant to grab one coffee and go. But once inside, the space was way bigger than I expected, and they happened to be baking salt bread right then, so the smell stopped me in my tracks. My "just coffee" plan quietly disappeared.

It's not a standalone building — you walk into the mall and find it inside.

Inside a shopping mall, but a surprisingly spacious café

Since it's inside a mall, I assumed it would be small, but that wasn't the case at all once I stepped in. The space stretched back quite a long way, with tables arranged in various styles.

From sofa seats to regular tables to rattan-style chairs, the mood shifted a little depending on where you sat. Above all, the chairs were comfortable, which made it easy to sit and chat with a friend. Green tiles, plants and wall art caught my eye too. Add in stained-glass-style lighting, and the whole vibe felt a bit different from the all-white cafés you see everywhere these days.

Chatting seats and study seats kept separate

What stuck with me most about Café Meomureum was the dedicated study space. The seats for chatting over coffee and the seats meant for studying were fairly clearly separated.

Some seats were partitioned off like a study room, which looked great for solo focus. There was actually someone watching an online lecture and studying, and the café even had printing facilities set up. I walked in thinking it was a café, but the further back I went, the more it felt like stepping into a small library. There were books off to one side, and baby chairs too, which stood out as a nice touch for anyone visiting with kids.

Having a space that works both for friends who came to chat and for people who came to study alone was the most impressive part of this Jeongja-dong favorite, Café Meomureum.

On the menu: americano ₩4,000, café latte ₩5,000, vanilla latte ₩5,000, caramel macchiato ₩5,000. Besides coffee, there was also strawberry latte ₩6,000, matcha latte ₩5,500, plus various teas, smoothies and ades.

On the bakery side: salt bread ₩3,500, handmade apple pie ₩3,500, among others.

We ordered an iced americano, a café latte, apple pie, and salt bread.

Salt bread straight from the oven, crisp outside

This place prides itself on its crispy-outside salt bread, and it just so happened they were baking a batch when we arrived. A little while later we got to eat it straight out of the oven — felt like perfect timing.

Picking up the warm salt bread, the outside was baked a nice golden brown. Taking a bite, the outside was crispy and the inside was soft — a real, clear contrast in texture, living up to its name.

Even though we'd already eaten a pretty filling lunch, there was still room for freshly baked bread, haha. The salt bread's baking time probably varies by visit, but if your timing lines up like ours did, it's worth trying it warm.

Handmade apple pie that isn't too sweet

Alongside the salt bread, we picked the apple pie. The lattice top caught my eye first, and cutting it with a fork revealed nicely layered pie crust.

Personally, when a dessert is too sweet I tend to lose interest after a few bites, but this apple pie's sweetness wasn't overly strong — it was just right. Easy to pair with coffee without feeling heavy.

If I had to pick just one between the salt bread and the apple pie, I'd have a hard time deciding. If you love the warm texture of freshly baked bread, go for the salt bread; if you want a dessert to slowly enjoy with coffee, the apple pie is a better fit.

Iced americano and café latte at Café Meomureum

Along with the bread, we ordered an iced americano and a café latte. Both came generously poured into tall glasses, and we each had one, with the apple pie and salt bread sitting between us.

The coffee was good too — clean and easy to drink alongside dessert after a meal. Two people who'd claimed to be stuffed from eel ended up sitting there for ages with two coffees and a spread of bread between them. I guess that's just how it goes when you meet up with a friend.

Can you bring kids to Café Meomureum?

With baby chairs on hand and plenty of space overall, it looked like a fine place to visit with kids.

There were books off to one side, plus what looked like kids' drawings on display, making it seem comfortable for family visits. That said, since this café also has a study section, if you're visiting with kids it's worth being a bit considerate and choosing seats away from the quieter study zone.

Café Meomureum: the verdict

I dropped in mainly for a coffee after eel for lunch, but there turned out to be more to see than I expected. Having a separate bakery display case, plus a dedicated study area on top of the regular seating, really stuck with me. Best of all, our visit lined up right as the salt bread came out, so we got to eat it warm. The apple pie wasn't overly sweet either, which made it easy to enjoy with coffee.
