Pyeongtaek BBQ with intercostal meat and garlic ribs: Jugeokjip

In short

Jugeokjip is a charcoal-grill Korean BBQ restaurant in Jisan-dong, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, where the meat from between the ribs is served under the name jugeokssal. Three of us ordered 2 servings of jugeokssal for ₩26,000, 1 serving of garlic-marinated rib meat for ₩29,000 and a bowl of rice, grilling plain and marinated cuts by turns while helping ourselves to the self-serve tteokbokki and side dishes. Jugeokjip is a solid pick when you want intercostal meat and rib meat at a good price.

What kind of BBQ restaurant is Jugeokjip in Jisan-dong, Pyeongtaek?

Exterior of Jugeokjip, a meat restaurant in Jisan-dong, Songtan

I was looking for a good restaurant in Songtan and ended up at Jugeokjip in Jisan-dong. I went for dinner with my brother's couple friends. Going in the early evening meant no wait at all!

Head into the alley by the Life Apartments and you'll spot the Jugeokjip building right away!

You have to park in the alley near the restaurant.

Sign for unlimited soju at the entrance of Jugeokjip

Right at the entrance, the first thing I saw was a sign for free unlimited soju...!? I was seriously shocked haha. Sadly this wasn't a drinking-focused meetup that day, but next time I plan a drinking night in Jisan-dong, I'm coming back here haha.

What is on Jugeokjip's self-serve bar?

Jugeokjip's self-serve bar had tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes), soup, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), corn and more. I spotted it on the way to being seated.

The tteokbokki was surprisingly delicious. It had that nostalgic school-gate tteokbokki taste, so it was genuinely great haha.

Self-serve corner with extra side dishes

Extra side dishes were also self-serve. It's a meat restaurant but it had this buffet-like vibe, and everything was kept nice and clean.

Ice cream on the house too~!! Coffee on the house too~!! With free soju as well, what's even left for the owner to make money on!?

The interior was huge too. Once it hit 6 PM, customers started pouring in. Further inside there were plenty of seats and roomy tables that looked great for group dinners.

Jugeokjip menu and prices

Menu for charcoal-grilled raw pork belly and pork ribs

Looking at the menu, there was the signature jugeokssal udae galbi (premium rib-area meat), along with raw beef rib meat, beef garlic-marinated rib meat, cubed snowflake beef, charcoal-grilled raw pork belly, and charcoal-grilled pork ribs — a really wide range.

There were also meal options like a lunch special galbitang (short rib soup), mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) and yukhoe bibim-naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles with raw beef).

The meat menu was so well put together and varied that it looked easy to pick whatever suited your taste.

Even among Songtan's good meat restaurants, this one stood out for having a varied and solid menu.

What we ordered and the table setting

  • Jugeokssal, 2 servings ₩26,000
  • Garlic-marinated rib meat, 1 serving ₩29,000
  • Rice ₩1,000
Basic side dishes pre-set for a reserved table

I booked through Naver Reservation about an hour ahead, and it was nice that they had the table pre-set for us.

There were tons of side dishes to eat — macaroni salad, geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi), jalapeños, rolled egg, sundubu (soft tofu), cabbage wraps, japchae, and more! Note that tteokbokki isn't part of the basic setting, so make sure to grab it from the self-serve bar!

How does jugeokssal (intercostal meat) taste?

We started with the unseasoned jugeokssal!! I wanted to take a photo, but my impatient brother already had the meat on the grill...

Jugeokssal placed on the grill

Jugeokssal is meat from around the bone — what we usually call rib-area meat — and it had that chewy yet savory quality intact.

Jugeokssal grilled to a golden brown

Grilled over charcoal, it had a subtle smoky char to it. The fat was just the right amount, so it wasn't greasy at all.

Dipped in salt and wasabi, it was so good...! All three of us agreed the jugeokssal was the best.

Garlic-marinated rib meat with a bowl of rice

We also ordered the garlic-marinated rib meat as an extra.

Additional order of garlic-marinated rib meat

The garlic-marinated rib meat had a strong garlic aroma, and the marinade wasn't harsh, with really good savory depth.

Ordering a bowl of rice to go with it, I polished the whole thing off in no time.

Alternating between the plain meat and the marinated meat meant we never got tired of it and kept eating happily 🩷

The three of us ordered 3 servings total and walked out surprisingly full! Just the right level of stuffed.

Is Jugeokjip worth the price?

Among Songtan's good restaurants, this is one I'd recommend if you want to eat rib-area meat and rib meat at a good price. Since it's in Jisan-dong, there are nearby Songtan cafés like Prefer Cafe or Magnet Coffee, so it was easy to head over for coffee after the meal. Random note: we were too full, so we went for a walk at K55 instead.
