Suseong Lake restaurant with a full-size kids' mackerel: Geumdeungeo
In short
Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch is a wood-fired mackerel restaurant on Deulan-ro near Suseong Lake in Daegu, where the fish is cured in nuruk salt. The writer visited on a weekday at 5pm with children and ordered wood-fired mackerel for 3 adults plus 1 child, and the 10,000 won kids' menu came with the same amount of mackerel as the 19,000 won adult portion. With a self-serve bar of house-made banchan, a dessert corner and parking on the ground floor, Geumdeungeo held up well as a family dinner spot.

Hi everyone, it's Yudi ❤️❤️
I was looking for a solid family meal near Suseong Lake and this time went to Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch :) My kids are usually really good eaters when it comes to mackerel, so I wanted to feed them a proper grilled mackerel 🐟🐟 — but this place isn't just grilled mackerel, it's more like a semi hanjeongsik (Korean full-course meal) style with lots of side dishes and a self-serve bar, so after eating there I understood why it's such a popular spot near Suseong Lake. (Based on a weekday 5pm visit — fairly busy.)

📍 Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch / 57 Deulan-ro, 2F, Suseong-gu, Daegu, South Korea
What does the name Geumdeungeo mean?
I found the name Geumdeungeo interesting — turns out it's a combination of 'geum' from nuruk salt (누룩소금) and 'godeungeo,' the Korean word for mackerel. The mackerel is cured with nuruk salt containing beneficial microbes from rice yeast, then grilled in a 450-degree wood-fired oven 🫢🫢 I was already getting excited.

Where Geumdeungeo is and where to park
Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch is on the 2nd floor of the building at 57 Deulan-ro, and you can park either in the building's ground-floor lot or the tower parking. The sign was easy to spot from a distance, and the building itself was marked as a 2017 Excellent Architecture award winner 👍👍

I went right after the break time ended, so I didn't need the tower and just parked on the ground floor 🚗🚗 Having the parking right below the restaurant meant we didn't get too wet even on a rainy day. When you're moving around with kids, finding easy parking really matters, and this was definitely convenient ☺️☺️
Dessert corner and the 90-minute dining limit
Take the elevator to the 2nd floor and the dessert corner is right there ☕️☕️ Iced Americano, juice, and even cups of ice were ready, which made for a nice simple finish after the meal.

The dining time is capped at 1 hour 30 minutes, so they take your order right at the entrance as soon as you walk in. It felt a bit fast at first, but the meal itself never felt rushed.

Inside Geumdeungeo: private rooms and high chairs
More than anything, the restaurant was way bigger than I expected with high ceilings, so it never felt cramped 💙💙 The tables were spaced out well too, so you didn't feel squeezed next to your neighbors.
There's also a private room space for a more intimate meal, which is great for family dining and would also work well as a Daegu meeting spot for friend gatherings or work dinners ☺️☺️
High chairs are available too, so it's a good option for visiting with young kids 🐥🐥

Self-serve bar and buying the house-made banchan
The self-serve bar had fresh vegetables, house-made banchan (side dishes), and salads — a good enough variety that you could pick what suited your taste.

And here's the part I personally loved ✅✅ On our way out, I noticed the house-made banchan we'd eaten in the restaurant was also sold to take home. As someone who preps side dishes at home, being able to buy the ones I liked was such a great bonus :)

What a table for 3 adults plus 1 child looks like
We ordered wood-fired mackerel for 3 adults plus 1 child 🐟🐟🐟🐟

The banchan here were really clean and tidy, and they even had Pororo bottled water for the kids 💙💙 Once we sat down, it felt just like being at a proper hanjeongsik restaurant — the table was set with a variety of side dishes to eat alongside the mackerel. Everything felt neat and well-put-together, and best of all, you could go grab more from the self-serve bar if anything ran low 👍👍

How the nuruk-salt aged wood-fired mackerel tastes
The nuruk-salt aged wood-fired grilled mackerel 💛💛 The outside was grilled to a nice golden brown, the skin crispy while the flesh underneath stayed moist. You could really taste the mackerel's characteristic richness, but thanks to the nuruk salt curing, the saltiness never overpowered — instead it had a clean, deep flavor overall.

Especially while still warm, picking the flesh apart was soft and moist, and rice just kept disappearing alongside it. A proper rice thief, hahaha. Each person gets half a mackerel, and the flesh was on the thicker side. The kids devoured it too, so this visit was a total success ☺️☺️
Does the kids' menu really get an adult-size mackerel?
The kids' menu came with the exact same amount of mackerel as the adult portion. If you're looking for a Suseong Lake restaurant to visit with kids, I think this menu setup is a pretty great deal 👍👍
Is Geumdeungeo worth it for family dinners and group meals?
Geumdeungeo's main dish is grilled mackerel, but looking at the overall vibe and the way the food is put together, it feels closer to hanjeongsik than a plain grilled fish joint. So it would suit anyone looking for hanjeongsik on Deulan-ro or a tidy hanjeongsik meal near Suseong Lake 🙏🏻🙏🏻 With a private room and a spacious layout, it also works well for family meals or larger group gatherings. Especially for taking your parents out or hosting someone, having grilled mackerel served alongside neat side dishes feels like a solid, satisfying choice — I'd recommend it ☺️☺️
Went for grilled mackerel, left feeling like I'd been treated to a proper hanjeongsik spread
