Why I chose Mad Hair in Jamsil for an autumn color

Autumn hair color change 🍂 As the weather turns a bit cooler, I start wanting to change up not just my clothes but my hair too. I especially hate the red tones that creep up over time after dyeing, so this time I wanted to switch to a matte color that would suppress red as much as possible.

So this time I visited Mad Hair, located near Seokchon Gobun Station! If you're looking into hair salons in Jamsil or Songpa and, like me, prefer calm colors without red tones, this color might be worth referencing :)

Mad Hair was easy to find from Seokchon Gobun Station. When choosing a salon, skill matters, but I also care quite a bit about the atmosphere of the space. From the moment I walked in, the overall vibe was clean and stylish, and it made a great first impression. Not overly flashy or busy — calm and comfortable instead!

On dye day you end up spending a good chunk of time in one place, so this matters a lot to me. Everything was well-maintained and pleasant, so I could get the service comfortably. There are so many salons around Seokchon-dong that it's hard to decide where to go, but Mad Hair felt easy to settle into from the very first visit.

"I hate red tones": the color consultation at Mad Hair

One of the most satisfying parts of this visit was the consultation! I've dyed my hair many times before, but this was the first time I got such a detailed color consultation. What I wanted was very clear.

I hate red tones.

Instead of just looking at a reference photo and copying the exact color, the colorist first carefully checked the color remaining in my hair and my hair's current condition. Then they explained, step by step, which colors needed to go in to get the look I wanted and how much red they'd need to neutralize.

Even within the same brown or matte family, the result can differ depending on the base, and the feel of the color can change depending on how much red is removed! I told them I'd rather have a slight blue cast than any leftover red, so this time they set the color to press down the red as much as possible.

My hair before dyeing! As the old color faded out, warm brown tones and quite a bit of red had come up. I don't think having warm undertones automatically means red hair suits you. When red comes up like this, my whole face ends up looking red and heavy, so I'm not a fan.

So this autumn, instead of the usual chocolate brown or warm brown, I wanted something calmer and more matte. This was the part I cared about most while looking into Jamsil hair salons — not just making the hair darker, but how nicely they could neutralize the red already there.

After the consultation, the actual dyeing began :) I'm not great at explaining things, so I basically just said "no red, matte please," but the designer asked detailed follow-up questions about the direction I wanted — how bright, how much red to remove, and what kind of feel I wanted once it started fading.

With dye, the fresh color matters, but how it fades over time matters just as much. They considered that too during the consultation, so it didn't feel like they were just making a pretty color for the day — it felt like they were finding a color suited to my taste.

And above all, the designer was so kind...ㅠㅠ I asked a lot of questions and they explained everything in detail, so I felt comfortable the whole time. I've been to several salons in Songpa, but this was honestly the first time someone gave me such a detailed consultation.

This time I went with strongly neutralizing the red. They set the color to be matte and calm while canceling out red, and it was exactly the feel I wanted! Autumn doesn't have to mean warm colors like red brown or orange brown. Since autumn clothes tend to be toned-down colors like brown, charcoal, and beige, I personally prefer calm hair color over red hair to match.

And done! It came out exactly the way I wanted, and I loved it. In photos it looks slightly different depending on the lighting, but overall the red is completely gone and it feels much calmer and more refined. Under natural light or bright spots, the matte quality really shows — so pretty...!

It doesn't look khaki-ish or overly ash either — the tone is just calmly settled overall, so it feels low-effort for everyday wear. During the consultation I said "I'm fine with a bit of blue showing through, I just really want the red gone," and that request was reflected well. What I hate most after dyeing is when hair looks red in the light, and this time that effect was reduced a lot — very satisfying.

Laying the before and after side by side makes the difference even clearer, right? Before, it was strongly red and warm brown; after, the tone overall feels calm and settled. It's not just darker — with the red gone, the color itself looks much cleaner.

If you also hate red tones creeping up after dyeing, or want a calmer autumn look, I'd recommend this kind of matte color too :) Maybe I should've gotten a cut too.....

In the end, I think getting a consultation based on your current hair condition matters much more than just showing one reference photo. Even the same color can turn out differently depending on your dye history and remaining pigment. In that sense, the consultation at Mad Hair was really satisfying. If you're looking for a place that's good at dyeing around Jamsil or Songpa, it might be worth getting a thorough consultation first.
