Seoul Station gyukatsu restaurant hidden on B1: Ichigyu date dinner

In short

Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch is a brazier-grilled gyukatsu (fried beef cutlet) Japanese restaurant on B1 of the LG Seoul Station Building, a 3-minute walk from Seoul Station Exit 10. After a first visit for a wedding-invitation gathering, the writer came back on a Sunday evening with her fiancé for the steki set (19,500 won), the gyukatsu set (19,500 won) and a Kirin draft beer (8,000 won). The gyukatsu needs only 7–8 seconds on the brazier to stay juicy and the steki set is even more tender, so ordering both and splitting them was the best combination at Ichigyu.

If you're an engaged couple, you end up going to Seoul Station a lot — ring shopping tours in Jongno, dates, you name it. (I'm even a GTX regular, riding it more than 10 times a month.. I basically can't live without Seoul Station whenever I have plans in Seoul.) But honestly, Seoul Station is always a bit awkward when you try to suggest meeting friends there.. Why!! Because good restaurants are hard to find!!!

Seoul Station really does seem to attract people who need to eat fast before catching the KTX, so a lot of places feel meh.. and the ones that are actually good have insanely long lines.. Still.. surely a place this huge has SOMETHING!? And it does, barely — maybe 5 places total..? Rare, truly rare.

Ichigyu, which I'm introducing today, is actually where I ate last time for a friend's wedding invitation gathering — it was so good that this time I was craving gyukatsu (grilled beef cutlet) in the evening and came back with my fiancé. Still crowded, still delicious. Here's exactly why I always recommend this place whenever gyukatsu comes to mind near Seoul Station 🐮

How do you get to Ichigyu from Seoul Station Exit 10?

Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch isn't inside the Seoul Station building itself, but on B1 of the LG Seoul Station Building. It'd be nice if it were inside the station, but then there'd always be a line and you'd never get a table, ugh. The good news is it's super close to the exit! Check the map! Dun dun~

The one tiny downside is that the first trip can be a little confusing, but follow my directions to Ichigyu Seoul Station and you won't get lost at all!!!

Enter through the main entrance on B1 of the LG Seoul Station Building, then take the escalator down on your immediate right,

and you'll see a map! Check the signboard — Ichigyu is number 13, but that's basically wasted on someone as directionally challenged as me.

★Just remember this.

Facing forward at the bottom of the escalator: ★go straight left for the restrooms, ★go straight right and round the corner for Ichigyu. Easy!

How long is the wait at Ichigyu on a Sunday evening?

We visited around 6pm on a Sunday, and the restaurant was about 50% full. Since Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch isn't inside the station itself, you can't just wander over and walk right in while sightseeing nearby. So check the wait on Catch Table ahead of time! 🐝Waiting tip🍯

What is the dining room at Ichigyu like?

Interior of Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch about half full

About half the tables were full, with a mix of customers ranging from couples like us to a group of 8 family diners. Being right by Seoul Station, there were also quite a few soldiers heading back to duty.

We of course ordered the mains — one steki set (₩19,500), one gyukatsu set (₩19,500), plus a Kirin draft beer (₩8,000) for my husband and a zero-sugar cola (₩3,000) for me.

I heard Kirin draft is only licensed at restaurants that have food to match it, and drinking it with gyukatsu brought back memories of our trip to Osaka — such a warm, fuzzy feeling.

What is on the menu at Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch?

There are both sets and à la carte items, but if you want the full brazier-grilling experience, the gyukatsu set and steki set are the signatures.

For à la carte or a simple lunch, the hamburg omurice and steak don (rice bowl) also looked popular.

What the 19,500-won steki and gyukatsu sets look like when served

The rice came out in a pot for two, steaming hot, with a rice paddle — and refills are apparently available.

Both the gyukatsu and steki sets came with Isigny salted butter, so the buttery aroma hit hard right from the brazier.

The neat, fully-loaded feel of a classic Japanese set meal was so satisfying. Look at that beautifully sliced medium-rare cross-section.

This one's the gyukatsu! Thicker cut, right?

Wide slices of meat from the steki set

And this is the steki set. Wider slices and even more tender.

Grilling gyukatsu on the brazier: how many seconds is right?

After coating the brazier with butter and getting that buttery aroma wafting up, we started with the gyukatsu, sizzling away.

They said gyukatsu is best grilled for only 7–8 seconds, so we flipped it quickly and briefly — grilled just right, it was juicy and paired amazingly with rice.

The steki set was sizzling too.. a quick dip in salt first, then a hit of wasabi for that nose-tingling kick, and also dipped in the itame sauce.

The juices were still alive, and with every bite the meaty aroma spread through without any toughness — soft and irresistible. The gyukatsu was a familiar, comforting flavor with great texture, while the steki set was even more tender with a stronger meaty taste.

If you want to lean into that Osaka gyukatsu vibe, go for the gyukatsu; if you're craving truly tender steak-style meat, go for the steki set.
