Yeongdeungpo gamjatang with kimchi refills: Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi

In short

Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk is a gamjatang (pork bone and potato stew) and ppyeodaegwi haejangguk (pork bone hangover soup) restaurant on the main road next to the Seoul Southern District Employment and Labor Office, a 5-minute walk from Yeongdeungpogucheong Station. The spicy gamjatang in the small size arrived with well-fermented kimchi side dishes that Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk refills on request, free extra rice, and broth good enough to finish to the last spoonful instead of ordering fried rice. Clean-tasting meat and deep, chili-spiked broth made even the small size a filling meal for two.

Where is Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk near Yeongdeungpogucheong Station?

Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk is a gamjatang and ppyeodaegwi haejangguk (pork bone hangover soup) restaurant on the main road, a 5-minute walk from Yeongdeungpogucheong Station. It's right next to the Seoul Southern District Employment and Labor Office, so it's easy to find.

I really love spicy, hot soup dishes, so hunting down good spots is basically my only hobby. This place had been on my radar for a while, and the timing finally lined up so I got to go. People around me had been raving about it so much that I was secretly super curious too.

Inside the restaurant, and why extra rice is free

The interior of Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk was really clean. The tables were spaced fairly wide apart, so it was comfortable to eat. The owner was also so friendly — that warm welcome put me in a good mood even before the food arrived. There's a big sign for country-of-origin labeling, and rice refills are free! That alone made me feel reassured before eating anything.

What comes with the spicy small-size gamjatang?

We ordered the spicy gamjatang in small size at Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk. I thought about ordering haejangguk and a chive pancake too, but went with gamjatang instead, and next time I'm definitely trying the squid and chive pancake.

This place has such a strong reputation as a Yeongdeungpogucheong go-to spot. I wanted to experience for myself why so many people travel from far away to eat here haha. Even the excited wait for the food to arrive was fun.

How good is the kimchi served as a side dish?

The basic side dishes at Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk come out ready to eat alongside the meat, and this place nails it. The kimchi is fermented just right — a perfect match with the gamjatang!!

The side vegetables were really fresh, the ssamjang (seasoned dipping paste) was delicious, and above all, the kimchi was just really, really good.

Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk also sells kimchi by the kilogram

It was so good that I glanced to the side, and sure enough, they were selling it by the kilogram. Of course... it's kimchi, and both kinds are delicious ㅠㅠ Each has its own charm. I said I could finish a whole bowl of rice with just the kimchi alone, and ended up eating one bowl before the gamjatang even arrived haha. The owner kindly refilled it for us without even asking.

Is this much really a small size?

Wow~~ looks so good!! The star of the show, the gamjatang, arrived. So generous, the visuals were amazing. Mouth watering haha.

Spicy small gamjatang bubbling on the burner

The bubbling sound and the savory smell made my mouth water even more haha. There were tons of potatoes, plenty of mu-cheong (radish greens), and a generous amount of meat. Can a small size really be this much of a bargain? I'm definitely going back soon. Now I get why everyone calls this the Dangsan gamjatang spot.

Is the pork clean-tasting, and how is the texture?

There wasn't even the tiniest bit of that gamey or fishy smell meat can sometimes have, which honestly surprised me. The meat slid off the bone smoothly and softly, so it was really easy to eat. It practically melted in my mouth — seriously top-notch texture!!! And there was way more meat than I expected, so I ate until I was full.

Rich gamjatang broth topped with cheongyang chili

How the broth tastes, and finishing it instead of fried rice

Wow... the broth is amazing too. Rich, deep, and so delicious! With chopped cheongyang chili peppers mixed in, there's a subtle spicy kick that could easily go with a whole bottle of soju. It has this addictive quality that kept pulling my spoon back to it — really charming. I scraped the broth clean to the very last drop. I thought about making fried rice, but the broth was so good I just cleared the whole thing instead.

The whole time I was eating, I felt full and at ease in the best way. I emptied it down to the very last drop of broth, until the bottom of the pot showed. It's truly a Yeongdeungpogucheong restaurant without a single flaw!

If you like gamjatang, you have to stop by. I can guarantee it'll be a choice you won't regret. I'm definitely going back again soon.
