Cheonan pork jowl grill with a self-serve banchan bar: Motsaenggin

In short

Motsaenggin Ttungdwaeji Cheongdang Branch is a pork barbecue restaurant in Cheongdang-dong, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, Chungnam. Two servings of pork jowl (₩38,000) and kimchi stew (₩13,000) were ordered, and a staff member set the meat on the grill with mel-jeot (fermented anchovy dipping sauce), cutting and cooking it at the table, while the self-serve bar offered myeongnan-jeot (salted pollack roe), white kimchi and other side dishes to take freely. The pork jowl bursts with juice, so pork jowl is the cut to order at Motsaenggin Ttungdwaeji Cheongdang Branch.

Today I'm introducing a restaurant where the pork jowl is absolutely amazing — Motsaenggin Ttungdwaeji Cheongdang Branch. I've been to the original Motsaenggin location so many times because I love it so much, and when I heard a new Cheongdang branch opened close to my house, I had to check it out. I already love pork jowl in general, but theirs is genuinely delicious, so I went in with high expectations again. Let me introduce this Cheongdang-dong favorite right away!

What side dishes come with the meal at Motsaenggin Ttungdwaeji?

Let me introduce Motsaenggin's basic banchan (side dishes).

Shredded green onion, secret soy sauce, and salt setup

Shredded green onion, a secret soy sauce, and salt.

Basic side dish spread with seaweed, white kimchi, pickled perilla leaves, and more

Seaweed, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), pickled perilla leaves, pickled radish, kelp, salted pollack roe, ginger shreds, salted shrimp, and ssamjang (dipping paste) all came out.

Side dish table with corn cheese and a fried egg

First off, the sheer number of side dishes was a pass! I thought it was just banchan, but they even brought corn cheese and a fried egg. On top of that, doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) came out at the end too, so it ended up being a really hearty meal.

Self-serve bar where you can grab more side dishes

You can grab any side dishes you're missing from the self-serve bar without any hesitation. I was so happy to find my favorite salted pollack roe there.. 💖 BBQ spots that serve salted pollack roe are rare, really rare~

Motsaenggin Ttungdwaeji Cheongdang has a receipt review event~ When you write a review, you can choose one of mul-naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth), bibim-naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), soy-sauce egg rice, ramyeon, or doenjang-jjigae, so make sure to participate!

Plate of pink raw pork jowl for two

Two servings of pork jowl, grilled with mel-jeot anchovy sauce

First, the pork jowl for two came out. The pink color and overall look of the raw jowl were seriously gorgeous 🤤 It looked fresh just from the sight of it.

Once the grill plate was hot enough, the staff member put the mel-jeot (fermented anchovy sauce) and pork jowl on the grill together.

What's so great is that the staff cuts the meat themselves and grills it for you too.

Grilled pork jowl cut into bite-size pieces

They cut it into perfect one-bite pieces and grilled it to just the right doneness, so it was delicious to eat. Really kind service.

Wrap of pork jowl, salted pollack roe, and pickled green onion in seaweed

Dipping a piece of seaweed lightly in sesame oil, then topping it with salted pollack roe and pickled green onion, is such a golden combo.. This is my favorite way to eat it.

Whatever combo I tried, it was all delicious. The side dishes were excellent too, and the pork jowl here has that texture where the juice bursts the moment it hits your mouth, haha.

Pork jowl dipped in mel-jeot

Even just dipped in mel-jeot alone, it's so good~ I really love BBQ spots that serve mel-jeot, haha.

Kimchi stew big enough to share between two

Pot of kimchi stew boiling

The kimchi stew took a little over 20 minutes, but wow.. the portion was pretty big. It's too much for two — three people seems just right!

Inside of the kimchi stew packed with pork

It was packed with pork and full of ingredients, so the portion felt generous.

I had it with steamed rice, and the kimchi stew was rich while the pork inside was really tender. We scraped the bowl clean with rice, hehe. If you visit Motsaenggin in Cheongdang-dong, I definitely recommend the pork jowl! Out of all the pork jowl I've had, this might be the best.
