Spicy pork galbijjim with egg custard in Seohyeon: Gimcheongja
In short
Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim Seohyeon Station Branch is a spicy braised-rib restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 4 of Seohyeon Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. The spicy pork galbijjim (braised pork ribs) came with a stone bowl of steamed egg custard, and enough sauce was left in the pan to fry up a finishing bowl of fried rice. With tender pork ribs free of any gamy smell and fried rice crisped on the bottom, Gimcheongja is a solid stress-buster on a day when only spicy food will do.

It's a cool, breezy September, and lately I've been craving something intensely spicy. Whenever that hits, the first thing I think of is that satisfying kick of heat on the tip of my tongue! Today I went to a restaurant near Seohyeon Station that I'd had saved on my map app for ages because it's famous for its spicy braised ribs. Here's my honest review of Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim (김청자매운갈비찜) Seohyeon Station Branch.

3 minutes from Seohyeon Station Exit 4, with 2 hours of free parking
Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim Seohyeon Station Branch is just 145 meters from Exit 4 of Seohyeon Station on the Suin-Bundang Line — about a 3-minute walk, making it a perfect spot right by the station. Search it on Naver Maps and tap 'directions' and you'll find your way through the alleys easily.
Look for the building with Tuna Plus and 7-Eleven on the first floor, then head up to the second floor. Since AK Plaza Seohyeon, CGV, and Megabox are all nearby, it's a great spot to stop by before or after a movie date or meeting. If you're driving, there's mechanical parking inside the building, and you get 2 hours free with a meal — super convenient even in notoriously parking-hostile Seohyeon. (That said, SUVs and larger vehicles may have trouble parking, and if it's full you'll need a nearby paid lot.)

Beef or pork galbijjim at Gimcheongja, and which spice level to pick
Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim Seohyeon Station Branch lets you choose between two main dishes — beef galbijjim and pork galbijjim — and a big plus is that you can finely adjust the spice level too. I sat down and immediately read the menu closely. Even if you're not great with spicy food normally, they say the mildest option is just a pleasantly light kick, so you can visit without worry.
We ordered the spicy pork ribs today, craving that chewy, tender texture. And of course, the essential soulmate of any spicy meal — the fluffy egg custard (gyeranjjim) — was a must-add. They say lunch visits come with a hearty set of side dishes as a lunch special, but even at dinner we still felt the generous portions and friendly service.

What the spicy pork galbijjim tastes like, from glass noodles to egg custard
Not long after ordering, the spicy pork galbijjim arrived at our burner, its fiery red sauce instantly whetting the appetite. It comes loaded with a generous portion of glass noodles (dangmyeon), and once it starts bubbling, fishing out the translucent noodles soaked in that sauce is absolutely amazing.
The main event, the pork ribs, was braised thoroughly with zero gamy smell, so tender the meat slipped right off the bone. The moment you bite in, clean, rich juices burst out along with a sweet-and-spicy house sauce filling your mouth. It wasn't an artificial capsaicin burn but genuinely a 'good kind of spicy' that melts away a whole day's fatigue. When the heat starts to build, pairing it with the nutty mayo corn side dish neutralizes the spice while adding a nice popping texture — makes it even better.

And right on cue, the stone-pot egg custard (ttukbaegi gyeranjjim) showed up! This steaming, bright yellow, puffed-up custard has a wonderfully soft, cloud-like texture when you scoop it with a spoon. Take a big spoonful of the hot custard, top it with a bit of the spicy galbijjim sauce, mix it up, and the balance of savory and spicy is perfect.

How to order the finishing fried rice: leave plenty of sauce in the pan
To enjoy the finishing fried rice 200% at Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim Seohyeon Station Branch, the trick is to ask them to leave plenty of galbijjim sauce for frying. Once you've fished out most of the meat and noodles, it's time to order every Korean's true dessert — fried rice.
They stir-fry rice, seaweed flakes, and a generous drizzle of sesame oil into that reduced, sweet-and-spicy sauce, and the flavor of the fried rice — especially once you let it crisp slightly on the pan and scrape the bottom clean — is out of this world. It's the kind of addictive flavor that won't let you put your spoon down even when you're already stuffed, so you absolutely must order the finishing fried rice no matter how full you are.

Is Gimcheongja worth it for spicy galbijjim near Seohyeon Station?
If you're near Seohyeon Station on a day when you're craving something intensely spicy and want to fill up on hearty galbijjim to blow off some stress, I highly recommend Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim Seohyeon Station Branch! The meat quality and flavor were both excellent, so next time a craving for spicy food hits, I'll definitely be back! 💖
