Sunday lunch parking at Gupo Jjambbong, Chinese restaurant in Busan
In short
Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch is a 17-year-old Chinese restaurant on Siryang-ro just above Gupo Market in Buk-gu, Busan. On a Sunday lunch visit with his parents, the writer ordered seafood scorched rice soup for 30,000 won, octopus and abalone jjambbong for 15,000 won and seafood platter jjajang for 9,000 won, and parked in the restaurant's own lot for 3-4 cars in the alley beside the building. The jjambbong, built on a herbal broth with sanghwang mushroom noodles, is mild rather than fiery, so Gupo Jjambbong works well for a family meal out.

Weekends call for eating out. Scorched rice soup for the parents, jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup) for me since I always need something to cure a hangover — so we went for Sunday lunch at Gupo Jjambbong, a well-known spot near Gupo Market in Busan.

They've been running this place since 2010, so 17 years now, and apparently opened a branch in Gimhae too — but since this was my first visit, let's go to the main branch.
Where is the parking at Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch?
Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch is easy to find — just head up above Gupo Market and it's right on the main road. We drove, and just one second down the alley right next to the restaurant, there was a dedicated lot on the right with room for 3-4 cars.
If that's full, there are residential parking lines along the alley that are free to use during the day.
Lunch course sets until 2pm, weekdays and weekends

They've always had a standard course menu, but now there's also a reasonably priced lunch-time course where you get two dishes. It's available from 11am to 2pm, weekdays or weekends, no distinction.
Inside Gupo Jjambbong, a Chinese restaurant by Gupo Market in Busan

It was the weekend lunch rush, so the place was packed with families out for a meal. Total neighborhood-loved local favorite vibes.

Even though it's been open a long time, the interior looked freshly redone — very clean. The chair covers add a nice accent point. Blue chairs seem to be for groups, yellow chairs maybe a solo-dining zone?
There's a 4-seater plus 2-seater table combo in the middle so group visits aren't a hassle, and quite a few single tables on the side too, so eating alone looked comfortable. Everyone's welcome equally here haha.

They don't cut corners even on the water. They served cold sanghwang mushroom tea, which I gulped down before the meal.
Naver receipt review event at Gupo Jjambbong

There was a Naver receipt event — 1 participant gets 4 fried dumplings, 2 participants get egg chive stir-fry. Getting a free dish just for a receipt review? Definitely worth joining.

The basic side dishes were pickled radish, onion, and black bean sauce. They told us extra side dishes are available at the self-serve bar.

The self-serve bar had not just side dishes but small plates, forks, tongs, and even scissors all ready to go.

While waiting for the food and looking around, I noticed they've appeared on all three national broadcasters???

And instead of saying the jjambbong broth was 'boiled,' they said it was 'simmered down' — which somehow made it feel like it took more care. Made with an herbal broth packed with medicinal ingredients good for the body, the jjambbong soup wasn't harsh at all, so it went down easy.
Seafood scorched rice soup, 30,000 won: the showpiece dish
Gupo Jjambbong's seafood scorched rice soup is ₩30,000. A well-heated stone bowl arrives with just the scorched rice inside, and right next to it, freshly boiled, waits the 'greatest soup under heaven.' It's nicknamed after a legend that the 6th emperor of the Qing dynasty fell in love with this dish, calling it the finest under heaven — and the scorched rice soup here lives up to that grandeur.

The owner came out personally and poured the sauce — loaded with seafood and vegetables — over the large scorched rice cake she'd made herself, sending up steam and sizzle sounds that filled the room. She stirred it so the scorched rice could soften, and told us to wait about a minute before eating.
While giving the scorched rice its time, I checked out the ingredients. The shrimp were genuinely huge — pass with flying colors haha. Also mushrooms, zucchini, broccoli, bok choy, bell pepper, carrots, and more — all healthy ingredients, making this a dish that everyone from kids to parents could enjoy without complaint.

If they're giving us two whole shrimp, no need to be shy — just eat up happily.

The savory scorched rice kept expanding as it soaked up the sauce, showing off its flavor more and more.
Octopus and abalone jjambbong with sanghwang mushroom and sweet potato stems, 15,000 won

Gupo Jjambbong's octopus abalone jjambbong is ₩15,000. The visuals instantly overwhelmed me. A whole octopus in there, two whole abalones, plus big mussels, shrimp, and clams — a truly loaded seafood jjambbong.
They thoughtfully gave us a small plate and scissors for cutting the octopus and discarding shells. They started right away by cutting up the octopus. Tender octopus chewed together with the noodles — how good does that sound?

And finally, the jjajang arrives too. Let's dig in.
Platter jjajang for one person is allowed

I've always wondered why platter jjajang (jjajang noodles with stir-fried toppings served on a plate) is always a minimum 2 servings — Gupo Jjambbong has a ₩9,000 single-serving seafood platter jjajang, which I love. Whenever I wanted to try a variety of dishes but ordered platter jjajang, I always had to sacrifice something else. Today, everyone could order exactly what they wanted with no compromises.

Glossy jjajang sauce loaded with a variety of vegetables and seafood, and they even topped it off with a fried egg for decoration.

Pop the yolk, coat the sauce and noodles, mix it all up — the mild sweetness and crunchy vegetables were great. Regular Chinese restaurants can often be heavy and oily to the point of feeling greasy, but this dish overall felt clean and light, easy on the stomach.

All the shells peeled off and ready to eat. Starting with the octopus and abalone, all the seafood was so fresh — if you're a seafood lover, you have to try the octopus jjambbong.
Sanghwang mushroom noodles and sweet potato stems in the bowl
Made with herbal ingredients, the broth was clean and refreshing. The noodle color looked slightly like buckwheat noodles, but it was actually sanghwang mushroom noodles — noodles infused with the golden 'miracle mushroom.' Oh, so that's why the water was also sanghwang mushroom water???
I also love sweet potato stems, and I found them in the jjambbong! Eating them together with the jjambbong wasn't strange at all. Good things next to good things, that's all haha. Another delicious meal today.
Starting with an octopus abalone jjambbong generously loaded with seafood, this Gupo Market favorite in Busan won over my parents' palates with healthy ingredients that go down smooth, and it's a neighborhood gathering spot with great value too.
