Today's review is of Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch, a Korean restaurant in Gwacheon.
Before a Monday date with my second child, who loves Seoul Land, I stopped by to fill up on something hearty first. I found Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch while searching for good restaurants near Seoul Land, and made a Naver reservation the day before.
Where is Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch, and when is it open?
Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is on the 1st floor at 67 Araetbaeraengi-ro, Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do. It's open Monday to Friday 11:00–21:00, with a break time from 15:00–17:00, and Saturday and Sunday 11:00–21:00 as well. There's no break time on public holidays, and a dedicated parking lot is available.
I heard all Haenon Miyeok branches are directly operated. There's plenty of parking in front, which makes it great to visit with kids. A wait is basically guaranteed, though — if you have flexible timing like me, I'd recommend an opening run at 11am or arriving around 1pm.
Inside Haenon Miyeok: seating and the 10-minute wait
The interior of Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch was really clean, fitting for a place that opened not long ago. The high ceilings kept it from feeling cramped. It was already full when I arrived, so I waited about 10 minutes.
I figured a seaweed soup place would feel like a home-style diner, but
it actually has the upscale feel of a traditional Korean fine-dining restaurant.
Self-serve banchan bar: what you can refill
Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch has a self-serve bar in the center of the restaurant. Basic side dishes come with your meal, and you can help yourself to more if you'd like.
My second child ate the fried eggplant and mukmuchim (seasoned acorn jelly) really well. The japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) was tasty too, and all the banchan were clean-tasting and good — great to eat with kids.

You order via tablet at the table, and there are a lot of seaweed soup varieties.
There's sea urchin roe, sea god, Tongyeong oyster, dried pollack, mussel, beef, scallop, and boneless flounder. We ordered the beef seaweed soup and the scallop seaweed soup.

What comes with the set for two, and how it tasted
We ordered the set for two, and the basic side dishes really came out generously.
There was also pan-fried flounder, and my second child tried it and said it tasted like yangnyeom chicken (Korean seasoned fried chicken), eating it right up.
The salad was fresh too, and the kimchi, japchae, and seasoned scallops weren't too strongly flavored — really good.

Beef seaweed soup vs scallop seaweed soup
Our order arrived. The seaweed soups came out bubbling hot in big earthenware pots — beef seaweed soup and scallop seaweed soup. There was so much beef and scallop packed in. The perilla oil base smelled amazing.
The scallops were really plump too. The beef seaweed soup was great as well.
I scooped a little of each into my kid's bowl, and she ate both with gusto, saying they were both delicious. Maybe because it's simmered in a bigger batch than what you'd make at home, the flavor was incredibly rich.
The perilla oil aroma and the rich broth, with scallops and beef, made it something that's easy for anyone — any age — to enjoy. It's surprising that seaweed soup can feel this upscale. The broth is genuinely rich.
Portions too big to finish: taking leftover soup home
Even a single portion at Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is generous, so we paid ₩1,000 extra for a to-go container and enjoyed the leftovers well at home too. I noticed some guests bring their own containers from home before visiting! The portions really are big. If you plan to take some home, remember to bring your own container.
With everything neatly packed up, we headed off to Seoul Land. A delicious, filling Korean meal before Seoul Land — mission accomplished at Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch, a great Korean restaurant in Gwacheon. Highly recommend~~
