Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch: a stop on the drive to Children's Grand Park
We stopped here while out on a drive-slash-outing to Children's Grand Park in Gwacheon — a Korean restaurant famous for its seaweed soup table setting, Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch! With the autumn weather, I wanted something hot like seaweed soup. The building itself looked clean and upscale from the outside, so it seemed like a great spot for a family meal 💙
The interior has a classy, somewhat mysterious vibe too. It's super clean and spacious, so I saw a lot of families bringing elderly parents along! Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch says its seaweed soup isn't pre-boiled and ladled out — each bowl is freshly simmered to order, the way the original nourishing soup is meant to be made.
One free abalone for pregnant and birthday guests
Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch runs an event where pregnant guests and birthday guests get one whole abalone free! Since I'm pregnant, I got to join in this time and received a free abalone added to my scallop seaweed soup 🤰 If you're expecting, seaweed soup is already great for your body, and with the abalone on top, definitely worth a visit~~
Unlimited side dishes at the self-serve bar
The self-serve bar is tidy too, and you can refill the side dishes that come with the table spread as much as you like. Cockle salad, napa cabbage kimchi, chicken salad, fried eggplant, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) — all unlimited refill! Really great value 😌
Kiosk ordering, takeout rules, and what we ordered
Every table has its own kiosk, so ordering is easy. One menu item is required per person, and ordering one menu per person gets you unlimited rice refills! For takeout, only the leftover soup can be packed, for a ₩1,000 container fee. You'll see once you order — the seaweed soup portions are huge, so packing leftovers is basically a must~~ We ordered the sea urchin roe seaweed soup set and the scallop seaweed soup set.

The set banchan, grilled flounder and tot rice
I didn't expect much from the basic side dishes, but grilled flounder even came out.. Doraji (bellflower root) namul, vegetable salad, fried eggplant, cockle salad and more — the quality of the basic banchan here is no joke~~ And they're refillable too. My husband finished a whole bowl of rice before the soup even arrived 🍚 The rice wasn't plain either, seemed like tot rice (seaweed fusion rice) — chewy and really tasty!
How the sea urchin roe seaweed soup tastes
The sea urchin roe seaweed soup had a clean, refreshing broth that I loved! The softly cooked seaweed and sea urchin roe went really well together, and the roe's mild, savory ocean fragrance made it even tastier. The roe melted softly in the mouth, adding umami to the broth, and it wasn't heavy or overpowering, so it went well with warm rice too. It was hearty yet clean, and my husband finished his bowl happily.
Scallop seaweed soup with one free abalone
The scallop seaweed soup came with scallop meat picked off the shell piece by piece, and the amount was really generous. The scallop meat was tender and chewy, so eating it with the seaweed gave a nice texture along with great umami. The one abalone I got through the pregnancy event was in there too, making it even more filling. The chewy texture of the abalone paired well with the clean flavor of the scallops and the seaweed soup — a great combination — and with warm rice it was hearty and delicious.
Packing the leftover soup, and coming back with my parents
The portions were so generous that we made sure to pack up the leftover seaweed soup. This seems like a place elderly parents would love too, so next time for Parents' Day or a birthday I'd bring mine along. Anyone looking for a restaurant near Seoul Grand Park in Gwacheon could also bring kids here. We're planning to come back too~ And once I give birth, I'll have to ask my husband to pack some and bring it to me at the postpartum care center,, haha 💗
