Chowol-eup Korean restaurant with a self-serve rice bar: Oneuldo Utja

In short

Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and duruchigi (spicy stir-fried meat) restaurant on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. The order was squid and pork duruchigi at 28,000 won, old-style kimchi jjigae at 12,000 won and a jumbo egg roll without cheese at 10,000 won, and the self-bar had free rice, seaweed soup and side dishes to cool down the heat. Nothing flashy, but the freshly cooked suhyangmi pot rice makes Oneuldo Utja Chowol a filling Korean meal in Chowol-eup.

Today I want to introduce a kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) spot in Chowol-eup! 'Oneuldo Utja Chowol' is a genuinely great restaurant that I really want to recommend. Even I, with my picky taste buds, was totally won over by their kimchi jjigae and duruchigi (stir-fried spicy meat).

Inside Oneuldo Utja Chowol: seating and wait time

Since it's so well known as a local favorite in Chowol-eup, there's even a wait during meal times because so many people come. That said, the space isn't cramped or chaotic at all. The interior is fairly spacious, making it good for groups too, and overall it's a comfortable place to eat.

The main dish: squid and pork duruchigi, 28,000 won

The dish I was most looking forward to on this visit was the squid pork duruchigi! Honestly, every time I've come here before I've only ordered the kimchi jjigae, but today I wanted to try the duruchigi, so I ordered it.

Oneuldo Utja's duruchigi is stir-fried in a spicy secret sauce, and they offer several versions — pork-only duruchigi, chewy squid duruchigi, and squid pork duruchigi with both pork and squid together — so you can choose based on your taste haha.

A table set with spicy squid pork duruchigi

This time I ordered the squid pork duruchigi so I could enjoy both at once haha.

Seeing the generous portion of duruchigi arrive, the spicy sauce really got my appetite going. Wow — and the portion is truly... so much!

Generous serving of squid pork duruchigi

The savory pork and the chewy texture of the squid blend together, so it feels much more satisfying than eating just one or the other, which I loved haha.

Above all, duruchigi really tastes best with rice.

Duruchigi piled on top of rice

Piling the spicy duruchigi on top of the rice, and picking up bits of squid along the way, my chopsticks kept naturally heading back to the rice. The combination of freshly cooked pot rice and spicy duruchigi really never fails haha.

Honestly, whenever I come to Oneuldo Utja, the first dish that comes to mind is the kimchi jjigae. What makes this place's kimchi jjigae special is that they use fully aged kimchi and domestic fresh meat.

Maybe because the kimchi is properly aged, when you take a spoonful of the broth, the deep, rich flavor is outstanding!

It's not aggressively spicy or salty — the umami is incredible, and it's the kind of familiar, hearty flavor that keeps your chopsticks going back for more with rice. Truly the best!

Especially with kimchi jjigae, the rice really matters. Oneuldo Utja pays close attention to their rice to make sure both the kimchi jjigae and duruchigi taste their best.

Freshly cooked suhyangmi pot rice

Suhyangmi pot rice: how good is the rice here?

They use a single variety called suhyangmi rice, and it's freshly cooked in a pot so you can enjoy warm, delicious rice — I really recommend ordering the pot rice haha.

A spoonful of kimchi jjigae, then a spoonful of hot pot rice — this combination alone, even without any extra side dishes, is enough to empty a whole bowl of rice in no time haha.

Jumbo egg roll without cheese, 10,000 won

The jumbo egg roll is not to be skipped either! The cheese version has actual cheese in it and is extra nutty and rich, but this time I ordered it without cheese~

When you're eating rich dishes like kimchi jjigae or duruchigi, having an egg roll alongside really pairs so well.

Oneuldo Utja's jumbo egg roll isn't pre-made — it's rolled fresh, one at a time, right after you order, so you get to enjoy it warm and soft. It's a side dish that everyone, young and old, will love, and it's genuinely huge — so good!

One warm bite of the egg roll, with its soft texture, pairs perfectly with both the spicy duruchigi and the kimchi jjigae.

Eating some duruchigi, then a bite of egg roll, then a spoonful of kimchi jjigae broth, then some pot rice — before I knew it, the meal had become wonderfully abundant haha.

Is Oneuldo Utja Chowol worth it for a hearty meal in Chowol-eup?

If you're craving a hearty meal in Chowol-eup, I recommend Oneuldo Utja Chowol, a genuinely great restaurant for kimchi jjigae and duruchigi.

Rather than flashy, dressed-up dishes, this is hearty food built on good ingredients and solid basics — and especially with Korean food, that comfortable quality of never getting tired of it, even eating it every day, matters a lot. I think Oneuldo Utja's kimchi jjigae and duruchigi fit that description really well haha.

On days when you're craving kimchi jjigae, pair it with warm pot rice; on days when you want something spicy, order the duruchigi — either way, I recommend Oneuldo Utja Chowol, a genuinely great kimchi jjigae and duruchigi restaurant in Chowol-eup haha.
