Jeonju fried chicken takeout that stays crisp: Mannyeon Dakgangjeong

Today, I’m introducing a must-try food spot in Jeonju Hanok Village. It’s probably a place anyone who has walked around the village has spotted at least once.

The hanok-style storefront really stood out thanks to its yellow signage. The lettering is nice and big too, haha.

A neatly organized takeout-only interior

There are no seats for eating inside; it is set up only for cooking and takeout, but everything was neatly organized. Maybe because so many people take their orders to go, the place was full of takeaway boxes, haha.

💰 Order details Fried dakgangjeong (large) — ₩28,000 After a huge debate over getting half-and-half or a menu item with shrimp, I decided to stick with the basic one. Next time, I should try one with shrimp.

There were lots of simple side dishes too, but the slushy beer immediately caught my eye!!! I wanted it, but daytime drinking is dangerous, so I painfully held back, haha. It was cool in the shade, but the sun was still hot enough that I thought the alcohol would hit me fast, haha.

Dakgangjeong that tastes good even after it cools

Since it is mainly for takeout, I think people often end up eating their dakgangjeong a few hours later rather than while it is piping hot. Usually, cooled chicken can have that distinctive chicken smell, but Mannyeon Dakgangjeong says it does not smell even when cold—and that it is actually tastier after cooling—so I was even more intrigued 👍 Honestly, I don’t eat cold chicken because I worry it will smellㅜ I hate that chicken smell~ㅠ

The box said to open the lid as soon as you receive it, since steam from the hot food could make the dakgangjeong soggy, so I did exactly that right away! Haha. With the lid open, the car filled with the smell of dakgangjeong on the way home, and I wanted to eat it so badly that I went straight home. We had originally planned to stop elsewhere too, but I just wanted to eat it quickly, haha.

For the review event, you can get a squeaky duck 🪿🪿 chicken toy or sotteok sotteok (rice cake and sausage skewers), haha. My son chose the chicken toy!! It squeaked all the way home, haha.

That red box is intense, right? Haha. I thought it suited dakgangjeong perfectly, haha. They gave us seasoned sauce and salt, and I liked that the sauce was securely packed in a plastic pouch. Usually sauce comes in a disposable container and sometimes leaks, but this one looked like it would not leak, which was nice.

Most people order half seasoned and half fried, but a few months ago, while traveling in Jeonju, I searched for local food and heard Mannyeon Dakgangjeong was a Jeonju Hanok Village favorite. We had taken it out then too, and the fried version was better, so we ordered only fried this time.

There were some bits in the sauce, and I think they were pieces of fresh fruit. The sauce also had Mannyeon Dakgangjeong’s own special flavor—not the usual intensely seasoned dakgangjeong sauce.

Fried dakgangjeong with salt and seasoned sauce

Mannyeon Dakgangjeong’s biggest charm, especially, is that it tastes good even when cold! Even after time passed and it had cooled, it was not soggy; the crispness and chewiness were still there, so I think it would be delicious even left over for the next day. Dip it in the included salt or seasoned sauce, and the crisp fried chicken plus sweet-spicy sauce makes it feel like you are enjoying two flavors from one box.

I had been struggling all day after drinking too much the night before, but once I tasted the dakgangjeong, there was no way I could skip beer, so I cracked open a can right away...😆 My husband said he could not drink, so I had it all to myself.

Cold beer and dakgangjeong 👍 The portion was generous and the value was good, so I do not think there is anything better as a snack, late-night bite, or travel takeout in Jeonju Hanok Village. If you are looking for crisp, delicious dakgangjeong, I definitely recommend trying it at least once.
