Jeonju Korean BBQ restaurant for pork and pollack roe: Mongyudo

In short

Mongyudo Sinsigaji Branch is a staff-grilled pork restaurant in Sinsigaji, Jeonju, Jeonbuk. On my fourth visit, I had bone-in pork belly and aged pork belly with pollack roe and myeong-i namul, and loved the private rooms and generous table spacing. Verdict: a comfortable, reliable choice if you avoid peak-time waits.

Signature food at Mongyudo Sinsigaji Branch

When I’m craving thick, juicy pork belly and pork neck in Jeonju’s Sinsigaji, Mongyudo Sinsigaji Branch is the first place that comes to mind. With its clean interior and top-notch grilling service, it’s somewhere I can focus solely on enjoying the meat—and this was already my fourth visit. Even as the Sinsigaji dining scene changes so much, there’s a reason this place has held its ground. I recommend it ✶

The atmosphere at Mongyudo Sinsigaji Branch

Restaurant atmosphere at Mongyudo Sinsigaji Branch

It’s famous as a great pork-belly spot in Jeonju, so lots of locals already know it!

Black-toned restaurant interior

Unlike many barbecue places, it has a modern, sophisticated black-toned interior and a well-equipped ventilation system, so it’s also popular for group gatherings in Jeonju.

There are private rooms for a more private meal, plus high chairs, which is lovely.

Dining area with generously spaced tables

The tables are generously spaced too, making it easy to talk—perfect for a family gathering in Jeonju.

Restaurant seating with a soft atmosphere

The soft atmosphere is so nice that I think it would be great for a date too.

The complimentary side dishes and sauces

Once you sit down and finish ordering, the basic sides are set out quickly. The accompaniments are a solid lineup that cuts through the richness of the meat.

Complimentary side dishes served with the meat

I absolutely loved the neat, refined sides: myeong-i namul (pickled wild garlic leaves), pickled onion, seasoned cabbage, seasoned bean sprouts, kimchi, and dongchimi (water kimchi).

Complimentary muksabal and siraegi-guk

Even muksabal (chilled acorn-jelly soup) and siraegi-guk (dried radish-greens soup) are included? 😱😱 The sauces to enjoy with the meat are wasabi, whole-grain mustard, salt, ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), and pollack roe! As a pollack-roe lover, I truly love Mongyudo 🫶🏻

Bone-in pork belly with the grilling service

  • 2 servings of bone-in pork belly
  • 1 serving of aged pork belly
  • Naengmyeon
  • A bowl of rice

That’s what we ordered. They also bring out meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce)!

Ordered bone-in pork belly and aged pork belly

The aged bone-in pork belly and pork belly had such an ideal fat-to-lean ratio! Because the cuts are thick, they grilled them so the outside was crisp while all that savory juice stayed locked inside 🥺 They recommended having the first piece(?) with salt, and it really woke up my appetite!! It just melted away in my mouth—true bliss 🪽 It was wonderful for tasting the savory umami and meaty aroma of aged pork itself.

The reason I go to Mongyudo is that I can have high-quality meat with pollack roe. It’s a completely dreamlike flavor... ✨ And my second pick is myeong-i namul + whole-grain mustard! This flavor really •• can’t be explained in words!!

And of course, we had it with naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles), which you can’t leave out with meat! Rather than having naengmyeon as a dessert, I find it much more satisfying to enjoy it alongside the meat. (●´ω`●)

You have to try the bone-in pork belly

The bone-in pork belly is a must at Mongyudo! My friend had been to Mongyudo before but had never tried it, so I thought, no, that won’t do—and ordered it. My friend said the meat clinging to the bone was ridiculously delicious haha. Please do try the bone-in pork belly :)

What I liked and what was disappointing

  • The staff grill everything from start to finish, so the juices are perfect and there’s no risk of burning the meat.
  • Because it is aged meat, there is no unpleasant smell and the texture is tender.
  • There is little smoke or odor, and the restaurant feels clean.
  • Parking is convenient even though it is on Sinsigaji’s main street.
  • However, there may be a wait on weekend evenings.

There’s a 100% chance I’ll return. It’s great for treating someone, and the meat is guaranteed to be good! I recommend it to anyone tired of grilling meat themselves and wanting to chat comfortably, or looking for a clean place in Sinsigaji for a company dinner or date.

This is a barbecue restaurant where the three essentials—quality meat, staff grilling service, and a sophisticated space—come together beautifully. If you’re looking for a reliably great meat restaurant in Jeonju’s Sinsigaji, or considering a clean, comfortable place for a gathering, it is absolutely worth visiting. Just note that waits can happen at peak times, so I recommend reserving ahead or going early.
