Jeonju Korean restaurant for rice-mixed galbi: Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi

In short

Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi is a Korean restaurant in Pungnam-dong, Jeonju, serving galbi hot pot and yukjeon. I mixed its sweet-savory, gently spicy broth, ribs, bean sprouts, and glass noodles with rice; it is a satisfying stop before a Hanok Village walk.

When people think of Jeonju Hanok Village, bibimbap or street food usually comes to mind first. But as someone from Jeonju, I actually find myself quietly wondering what I need to eat for it to feel like a proper meal every time I visit. Then I remembered mulgalbi, a soupy rib dish Jeonju has enjoyed for ages! Since I was already heading to Hanok Village, I decided to have something hot and spicy properly, so I visited Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi, a mulgalbi spot in Pungnam-dong, Jeonju.

Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi location and parking

It is on the first floor at 28 Dongmun-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeonbuk State, and is open daily from 11:00 to 22:00. Break time is from 15:00 to 16:30.

Parking spaces in front of the restaurant

There is space for about five cars right in front of the restaurant. If it is full, you can use the nearby Hanok Village public parking lot.

A tidy exterior and an interior with a hanok ceiling

Exterior of Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi

Even from the outside, it had the neat, polished feel of a Korean set-menu restaurant.

Restaurant interior with a visible hanok ceiling

The interior felt modern overall, but when I looked up, the distinctive ceiling of a hanok (traditional Korean house) created a different kind of atmosphere.

Interior with sofa tables and group seating

There were sofa tables, group seats, and four-person tables, plus partitions between the tables, so it looked like a comfortable place to eat.

Instructions for enjoying mulgalbi

I carefully read the instructions for enjoying mulgalbi written on the wall and followed them one by one, haha. If they tell you how to eat it, you have to try it their way!

A menu focused on galbi hot pot and yukjeon

Menu focused on galbi hot pot and yukjeon

The menu was very simple, which somehow made it feel more sincere. Rather than spreading itself across all sorts of dishes, it was clearly focused on its main dishes: galbi hot pot and yukjeon (pan-fried battered beef). You know how truly good restaurants have a certain presence right from the menu?

Side dishes served with the hot pot

From crunchy seasoned bean sprouts to kimchi, pickled onions, refreshing seasoned chives, and fresh ssam vegetables, everything was filled with side dishes that went well with the hot pot!

Mixing galbi hot pot with rice

It was generously packed with green vegetables, crunchy bean sprouts, mushrooms, and glass noodles, while thick pieces of galbi were hidden like a mountain beneath the red sauce.

Glass noodles and bean sprouts in bubbling galbi hot pot

Once the bean sprouts had softened and the broth was bubbling away richly, I picked out the glass noodles and bean sprouts that had soaked up plenty of sauce first. Slurping them up, the seasoning had really seeped in, waking up my appetite right from the start.

Galbi hot pot soaked in seasoning

Wow, though, the sauce here was seriously incredible...! It was not just aggressively spicy; it began with a sweet-savory flavor that clung to the palate, followed by a gently spicy, deeply savory kick.

White rice topped with broth and rib meat

I spooned the rich broth over fluffy white rice, added tender rib meat and bean sprouts, then mixed it all together. It was good enough that I could have eaten two bowls of rice.

Lettuce wrap with galbi and garlic

Wrapping two pieces of meat in fresh lettuce with garlic and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) was completely delicious too.

Thick yukjeon with chives

Golden, thickly pan-fried yukjeon

The yukjeon was golden and thickly pan-fried, with the savory flavor of beef and a satisfying bite still fully intact. It was seasoned just right, so even without dipping it in soy sauce, its nuttiness spread through my mouth.

Yukjeon served with chives

I also ate the yukjeon with the chives served alongside it now and then. The yukjeon was tasty on its own, but the chives made the combination just right. They really supported an already delicious yukjeon.

A hearty Korean meal before a Hanok Village walk

If I were taking my parents to Jeonju Hanok Village, this is somewhere I would definitely want them to try. In the evening, it would also be so nice to have mulgalbi and yukjeon with a glass of soju. Since it is inside Hanok Village, you can have a filling meal and then enjoy a leisurely walk, making it perfect for a date too. Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi won me over with its location, atmosphere, and flavor. Rather than searching for more reviews, why not head there already? Haha, another great meal today :)
