I love grilled fish, but cooking it at home means days of lingering smell and greasy stovetops, so I'm always a bit hesitant to actually do it. Luckily a grilled fish restaurant had just opened near my place, so I went to check it out. It's Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch, where fish is grilled golden in a wood-fired oven and every side dish comes out neatly plated — a proper Korean meal, done right.

I was surprised it was already packed on a weekday lunch — from the clean first impression to the smell of grilled fish, my expectations shot straight up!!!

Inside, the 2-seat and 4-seat tables were spaced generously apart. The inner window room felt private but can also be booked for groups of 22 or more, so it's great for gatherings or company dinners!

There were even baby chairs available, so it's great for family meals with kids too — and the menu seems perfect for it, haha.

You can pick from a variety of grilled fish that keep the fresh taste of the sea intact — mackerel, Atka mackerel, Spanish mackerel, dried yellow corvina, braised pork, marinated crab, and pollack roe soup, among others!

Oven mackerel set 16,000 won vs oven Spanish mackerel set 20,000 won

On this visit I ordered the oven mackerel set for ₩16,000 and the oven Spanish mackerel set for ₩20,000. Here come the mackerel and Spanish mackerel, grilled moist in a 500-degree oven 🐟

Grilled fast at high heat in the oven, the fish skin turns crispy while the flesh stays moist, so you get the full flavor, aroma, and texture all at once!

First bite goes to the oven-grilled mackerel! Just the golden, glossy look of it was enough to make me drool 🤤 Any fishy taste was completely gone, leaving only a nutty savoriness — piled on white rice, it's an absolute rice thief! Mackerel is also rich in omega-3 and DHA, great for blood vessel health and top-notch for fighting fatigue, a nutrient-packed blue fish.

The oven-grilled Spanish mackerel was the ultimate in mild, clean flavor. The flesh was so moist and tender it practically melted in my mouth. Dipped lightly in wasabi soy sauce, the savoriness came through even more. It's a high-protein, low-fat fish, so it's easy to enjoy without guilt, and being rich in calcium makes it a healthy pick for everyone.

The side dishes were so neatly done that, honestly, if this tasted better than my mom's home cooking...? Hahahahaha. Lotus root salad, doraji (bellflower root) muchim, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), young radish kimchi, cabbage salad, crunchy pepper muchim — nothing was missing, and every single one hit the spot.

Napa cabbage doenjang soup comes with it too — oh, this was savory and delicious as well!

And my favorite part of Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch was the self-bar. The basic sides are already provided, but you can freely grab more at the self-bar if you want extra, which made things more convenient and felt more generous.

Young radish kimchi, lotus root salad, crunchy pepper muchim, deodeok (bellflower root) muchim, cabbage salad, bibimbap toppings, leafy wraps, japchae, sungnyung (scorched rice tea), and even tteokbokki! Sides that aren't included by default are all set out at the self-bar, so make sure to try them!!!!!!!!!!!! The young radish kimchi especially was so, so good.

I got to properly enjoy grilled fish, crispy outside and tender inside, straight from the oven — no more hassle of grilling it myself at home, and it was a genuinely satisfying meal! The main grilled fish and even the side dishes all came out neatly plated, so this seems like a great place to bring parents too.
